To think the test must be wrong

I am in a state of hysteria here. I am in the peri and on HRT. We haven’t been particularly careful because I didn’t think I needed to be.

Have been feeling tired, off colour and have had ridiculously sore boobs. Have just had a positive test.

Can the HRT hormones somehow affect the outcome of the test?! This is the hope I am clinging on to.

Anyone?

PS I am nearly 49 ffs

From google AI

  • Perimenopause/Menopause: The elevated FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone) that accompany lower estrogen levels can sometimes mimic
  • hCG
  • ℎ𝐶𝐺
  • on a test, leading to a false positive.
Randomuser2026 · 16/02/2026 16:40

But it is a sometimes.

Moen · 16/02/2026 16:40

It’s very unlikely that HRT is causing a positive pregnancy test OP. The tests detect hCG only.

I’m sorry if it’s not the result you wanted but you have options x

chillidoritto · 16/02/2026 16:48

I already have 5 children. I can’t have another, I just can’t. I’m not sure I can cope. I’m already an “older mum” although DH is 10 years younger. I will phone the surgery first thing tomorrow to see what they say.

And that’s OK. It’s your body and your choice. I had to make the same choice last year.

Speak to your GP and go from there. BPAS are really helpful too x

Tallestone · 16/02/2026 16:52

Hopefully it's the hrt

Saucery · 16/02/2026 16:54

My GP was very clear at my HRT review that pregnancy would still be a remote possibility (am in my 50s), so I hope you can speak to someone asap about your result. You have options Flowers

chillidoritto · 16/02/2026 17:28

Thanks everyone. I’ve been very stupid. Please let this be a lesson to others.

OP posts:
niwtdaaam · 16/02/2026 17:34

OP, you could be pregnant. Try not to stress yourself out too much. Go to see the GP asap and if you are pregnant you do have options.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/02/2026 17:35

Would it be so bad to have a baby?

GreenPaperCut · 16/02/2026 17:36

You can get online finger prick blood tests for HCG, if GP is a while or won’t do anything other than any other urine then somewhere like medichecks you can order today for next day delivery and list back same day for Around £50

Did you read OPs posts? She already has 5. Really harsh

3luckystars · 16/02/2026 17:37

It’s not a false positive. How pregnant do you think you are?

It’s really unbelievable odds!

ScaryM0nster · 16/02/2026 17:39

It’s very unlikely to be a false positive because if the ways the tests work.

OP is 49, already has 5 children and doesn't think she would cope. You can hear the panic in her typing so surely you know the answer to your question?!?!

I totally agree.

@chillidoritto - look after yourself and do what’s best for you 💐

Theunamedcat · 16/02/2026 17:45

There was an upsurge in menopause babies in my area the drs put out warnings you CAN STILL GET PREGNANT not always with a good outcome i know my body and its still freaking fertile at almost 51 im keeping my legs firmly shut because fuck no

Anyway as long as your in the UK you still have choices

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 16/02/2026 17:45

Oh bless you. You may have a really difficult decision in front of you to make. I hope your partner is supportive but ultimately it’s your decision and you need to make the one that’s is best for you and your entire family going forward. I don’t envy you at all but you sound like you are sensible and level headed which is what you need to be.

She has already said that yes it would be!

If she doesn't want a sixth child at 49, yes.

Which is what she has said.

She is an adult. So maybe pay her the compliment of knowing her own mind.

OP has said she is almost 49 and already has 5 children so I'm guessing having another (unplanned) baby would be pretty bad in her circumstances.

Lots of reasons why someone doesn’t want to or cannot continue a pregnancy. And luckily in the UK we are allowed to make that decision for ourselves!

OP, GP is unlikely to go any tests to check for pregnancy if you have had a positive result. You can self refer to termination services if that’s what you wish, they will scan you there if unsure of dates.

If you decide to continue the pregnancy then you can also self refer for maternity services too.

For what it’s worth, I understand the reasoning behind not wanting to have another baby and would absolutely do the same in your situation so no judgement here unlike some other posters on this thread 🙄

diddl · 16/02/2026 18:06

Why did you think that you didn't have to still be careful?
