Valentine's meal deal...people have become so shameless.

AIBU to think that people have become shameless, selfish and greedy?

I noticed the Asda Valentine's meal for two offer earlier this week: starter, main, two sides, pudding, and a bottle of wine, all for £12 quid. Amazing deal really and a nice idea for a night in together.

Went back today to get it... Absolute hoards round the fridge, loading their trollies with multiples meals worth, everything times five or six... scrambling for all the best dishes. By the times I got to the fridge there was hardly anything left.

Am I being unreasonable, or have people always been like this?? I'd be embarrassed to do that, but no-one seemed to care.

Choosing to stock up on discounted food is one of the ways people get through the cost of living crisis. It's only sensible. It's not 'selfish', it's buying what the shop is trying to sell.

Op is talking about people buying multiples of the meal deal.
So not really cost of living if you can afford 2 or more. You could get a lot more regular food for £24.
Lets be honest it’s people taking advantage of a cheap deal that includes alcohol.

exse24Londoner · 14/02/2026 11:24

I feel as though I've missed the problem - a supermarket has a time limited deal & people are making the most of it.......

@surrealpotato are you suggesting that everyone should behave with more modesty & only buy one rather than make the most of a bargain?? I think you are being rather judgey & well done you for being able to afford not to buy in this way

They're not being greedy or grabby

Where do the bottles of Prosecco fit into this frugality?

ah! so people who are being frugal aren't allowed any joy in their lives??????

Just reading with curiosity as wouldn’t occur to me to buy a processed ready meal.

Jesus Christ 🙄

jjourneys · 14/02/2026 11:32

I rarely supermarket shop outside Lidl, except for going for a meal deal with alcohol when they have them. Morrisons actually goes down to £13.50 from £15 when you use your More card, and when that includes two steaks and a bottle of Prosecco, is a massive bargain!

I have actually bought this deal twice this week, but split it across several days, the starters with some leftovers, have turned into dinners in their own right. I’m stretching it all to the max! And both shops I was strict with myself and didn’t impulse buy anything additional! Go me!

But why is that wrong?

Why is op labelling people as shameless, selfish and greedy for taking advantage of a deal that they like the look of and would benefit from?

I've never heard of scallops, steak, chips and green vegetables, a lemon tart and a glass of prosecco described as a processed ready meal before.

Me neither, lol, my steak is being used with some udon noodles and jammy eggs in a ramen tonight lol!

Nodancingshoes · 14/02/2026 11:52

Went to M&S - £25 for the valentine's offer. Round the corner was the normal meal for 2 deal for £15! Much more choice too so we got that

What part of frugality means you can't take advantage of cheaper wine? Cheaper food doesn't mean joyless, for heaven's sake.

Wherever the person buying it budgets it in.

SanFairyAnnie · 14/02/2026 13:48

There was a huge crowd round the Valentine's Day stuff at my local large store but not pushing or shoving. Delays seemd to be caused by pople at the front of the queue dithering about which side dishes to choose. Also an assistant was rapidly refilling the shelves so that helped.

I’ve very much enjoyed this thread and it has made me miss the uk.

DH is away anyway so I wouldn't qualify for the valentine meal dealWink

Sensiblesal · 14/02/2026 14:07

Was the same in Asda when I popped in this morning. They wouldn’t even move so the poor lad trying to restock could get to the fridge

Also went in Sainsburys to use the Argos & it wasn’t as bad there, just lots of men buying last min flowers

Emmz1510 · 14/02/2026 14:08

Well the shops could have imposed a limit of one or two meal deals person. But really you can’t blame people for stocking up on bargains given the price of groceries these days. That’s the real shambles.

DurinsBane · 14/02/2026 14:22

ParmaVioletTea · 14/02/2026 00:21

Although I don’t know why people see ready meals as a treat. Quite the reverse in my view. Never well cooked & always over flavoured and just disappointing, compared with what I can cook.

That’s because you are just an amazing person and better than us

hopes2409 · 13/02/2026 23:06

Boo fucking hoo my partner just been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and likely wont make next valentine

yes i am harsh but please stop wasting your time worrying annd moaning about this shit

I’m so sorry to hear this you are right people waste far too much precious time worrying about silly things. Thinking of you

Gingirl84 · 14/02/2026 14:25

ifonlyitwasreal · 13/02/2026 23:11

Who wants a ready meal for a treat dinner? They’re all horrible and taste of salt.

Because maybe that’s all they can afford or maybe they are working and it’s a quick option

Throwawaygh · 14/02/2026 14:25

People have always been like this. I used to work in Sainsbury’s and we had to take final reductions into the back to mark them down. Otherwise people would be shoving things in your face or grabbing things out your hand, or trying to steal the stickers as you printed them. Seagulls or vultures we used to call them. I used to like to stand in the back where they could see me and ignore them shouting through asking for things. I also used to delay taking the trolley out for ages when people were being rude 😂

MissRaspberry · 14/02/2026 14:36

Maybe they were all swingers celebrating valentine's in one big happy orgy 🤣🤣
