Valentine's meal deal...people have become so shameless.

AIBU to think that people have become shameless, selfish and greedy?

I noticed the Asda Valentine's meal for two offer earlier this week: starter, main, two sides, pudding, and a bottle of wine, all for £12 quid. Amazing deal really and a nice idea for a night in together.

Went back today to get it... Absolute hoards round the fridge, loading their trollies with multiples meals worth, everything times five or six... scrambling for all the best dishes. By the times I got to the fridge there was hardly anything left.

Am I being unreasonable, or have people always been like this?? I'd be embarrassed to do that, but no-one seemed to care.

The Co-op one is amazing - £10 with a membership card - for one of their Truly Irresistible meals, 2 sides and a bottle of Prosecco. A friend asked me to get her the steak one and it saved over £12.

Thanks for this. I love a special meal deal as much as the next UPF fan but was trying to give this one a miss as I'm trying to run down the freezer while DP is working away, which obviously means I'm not entitled to this offer anyway.

But seeing as it's only a tenner and the wine is worth over half of that, I thought I'd allow myself this and got a chicken and wild mushrooms in cream sauce with dauphinoise potatoes and garlic bread.

Being a good Mumsnetter, I'll get some broccoli to have with the chicken and freeze the bread and potatoes to have before running a marathon carrying a sack of coal.

Ha! I like the idea of multiple celebrations ... after about the third you wouldn't be able to move from the table.

XenoBitch · 13/02/2026 22:22

It is a good deal, and you can't really blame people for wanting to stock up.
But yep, it does feel a bit wrong when you know it is all going in a freezer and wont be used for its intended purpose (Valentines meal).

It's intended purpose is the same as anything else Asda sells - to make money, either through profit or through bringing people into the shop in general. It's marketed as for Valentine's Day, but that's just a name.

A bit like the Dibly dine in!

IsItSnowing · 14/02/2026 10:18

Shop puts it on sale, people buy it. Shocking.

Surely the intended purpose is eating it.

Ucantfixstupid · 14/02/2026 10:19

It's a meal deal with a 'Valentine's Day' label on it. People can buy whatever they want.

Bloody hell, we're not even allowed to freeze food now without the pious, po-faced crowd coming out?!

You'd be horrified by me. I bought the Asda deal even though I’m single!

Nosejobnelly · 14/02/2026 10:23

We used to get the M&S ones and I’m sure you had to go early but usually got something- it wasn’t carnage!

Gwenhwyfar · 14/02/2026 10:24

M&S Food is expensive. It doesn't attract the struggling people who go to Asda looking for deals.

Saint Valentine would be turning in his grave! Who said single people can eat and get a bargain!

I’m surprised they allowed more than one meal deal per person.

Actually I’ve read lately that Asda have been losing market share and getting the wind up, so I dare say they were reasoning that anything to get the punters in and loading their trolleys..

custardcreme77 · 14/02/2026 10:37

I got one of the Asda meal deals a couple of days ago and I’m very happy with it. I don’t normally bother with these type of deals due to lack of choice but for once, managed to get the vegetarian options I wanted…and it’s all for me! 😁

I will get several meals or part meals out of the deal, topping up with salad and / or other vegetables. With my 3 cheese sourdough loaf from the instore bakery, I’ll be in 7th heaven😊

I only bought the one deal but if people want more, that’s their choice.

jjourneys · 14/02/2026 10:37

My Morrisons has got Champagne reduced from £25 to £10, and one old guy was buying a trolleys worth, and I’m sure it wasn’t for personal consumption, more his local pub or wedding venue lol!

Are you discriminating against polygamous relationships, OP? 😆

Yep 👍🏻

That is a good deal - personally I couldn't blame people for stocking up on some "nicer" meals for the freezer at a good price.
Also, I've found that if you're clever with your selections, you can easily bulk out a "meal for 2" to become a "meal for 4".
If you're snobby enough to get arsey with people taking advantage of a good deal, then take yourself to Waitrose or M&S instead.

I think the same applies to yellow sticker deals. I currently do my food shop at Asda at 8am on a Saturday morning, and the deals are in good supply. I got all 3 of the packets of cheesy ready-made mash they had, and both of the packets of salmon fishcakes.
The early bird catches the worm.

Can't blame them for wanting to flog it all off.

That's why they've priced it to move and got one of the interns to start this thread.

Ha! Rumbled.

Although I don’t know why people see ready meals as a treat. Quite the reverse in my view. Never well cooked & always over flavoured and just disappointing, compared with what I can cook.

Compared with what I can cook they are a treat, better cooked and better flavoured. And nope, I have no time or interest to learn.

HeadyLamarr · 14/02/2026 11:04

Choosing to stock up on discounted food is one of the ways people get through the cost of living crisis. It's only sensible. It's not 'selfish', it's buying what the shop is trying to sell.

cupfinalchaos · 14/02/2026 11:11

Just reading with curiosity as wouldn’t occur to me to buy a processed ready meal.

MatronPomfrey · 14/02/2026 11:13

We used to get M& S meal deals when they were £10. Always bought 2, 1 meatballs and 1 veggie. Split them over Friday and Saturday night. Not everyone likes the same food.

Jadedpersuaded · 14/02/2026 11:13

OMG!!! PEOPLE IN THE SHOP BUY THE GOODS THAT ARE FOR SALE.

Flabberghasting, disgusting, outrageous.

Unclench dear.

Op is talking about people buying multiples of the meal deal.
So not really cost of living if you can afford 2 or more. You could get a lot more regular food for £24.
Lets be honest it’s people taking advantage of a cheap deal that includes alcohol.
