Valentine's meal deal...people have become so shameless.

AIBU to think that people have become shameless, selfish and greedy?

I noticed the Asda Valentine's meal for two offer earlier this week: starter, main, two sides, pudding, and a bottle of wine, all for £12 quid. Amazing deal really and a nice idea for a night in together.

Went back today to get it... Absolute hoards round the fridge, loading their trollies with multiples meals worth, everything times five or six... scrambling for all the best dishes. By the times I got to the fridge there was hardly anything left.

Am I being unreasonable, or have people always been like this?? I'd be embarrassed to do that, but no-one seemed to care.

I got two from M&S because my son wanted to try Beef Wellington and I can't be arsed to make THAT from scratch. The four of us (!) ate both meals (!!) yesterday (!!!) - do you think M&S police will come arrest us?!

That advert nearly sold me, I have to say, whoever does their food photography is a genius.

PersephonePomegranate · 14/02/2026 08:41

It's just shit processed ready meals, dressed up as something special for Valentines day! I'd cook something nice instead!

ParmaVioletTea · 14/02/2026 08:45

Allergictoironing · 14/02/2026 08:29

But yep, it does feel a bit wrong when you know it is all going in a freezer and wont be used for its intended purpose (Valentines meal).

So does that make me immoral when I stock my freezer up with items which are only on sale usually at Christmas time? You get things like party foods, stuffing flavours, desserts etc then that you can't get at other times so I make the most of it when I can. But as it's only sold at Christmas, will the food police come after me if I cook my favorite pork, sage and caramelised red onion stuffing in February, or serve up the canapes which you can only get in December when I have family round at Easter?

Ooo I hope they don’t check my freezer for the red cabbage and apple dish I can only buy at Christmas

rememberingthem · 14/02/2026 08:46

Some certain sections of society do this with everything, valentines, January sales, summer sales etc! They are simply selfish and greedy 🤷‍♀️. Tbh the valentines meals are generally a load of shit anyway, you could probably get together a decent home cooked meal for cheaper!

DiscontentedPig · 14/02/2026 08:47

Can't blame them for wanting to flog it all off.

That's why they've priced it to move and got one of the interns to start this thread.

Fbfbfvfvv · 13/02/2026 22:34

People have always been greedy.
You only have to look in peoples trolleys in the run up to Christmas to know that! And during the height of the pandemic where people were stripping the supermarkets bare and filling their garages full of supplies!

It's not greedy - it's people taking advantage of cheaper food at a time when food is becoming more expensive every week!

amibeingaknob · 14/02/2026 08:53

I got a waitrose one yesterday - it was quite mental in there and we live in a 'posh' area. Checkout girl said people are purposely picking hte most expensive which makes sense. I have 4 coming by delivery tomorrow that ive ordered - i got the most expensive spirit drink for pressies. I suspect it won't come as will be out of stock, but if it does thats 14 food items and 4 bottles of spirits (at usually 25 quid a pop) for 100!!! and bloody nice food too. Quite the bargain. Some of it you cant freeze though so we will be pigs for a few days. :)

Morrisons was £15 for the same offer, but no shoving and plenty of options in stock...guess it depends on where you are

Only one side in the Morrisons deal

stickydough · 14/02/2026 09:11

Those meal deals are so disappointing if you are veggie. Always one really minging veggie option available.

MrsR87 · 14/02/2026 09:14

We don’t usually eat processed food as we enjoy cooking and prefer the taste of home cooked food. But I was intrigued so we got one to try earlier in the week…I wouldn’t want to eat today for Valentine’s Day as I personally don’t see processed food as a treat. When you consider that at Asda it’s £12…I picked up a bottle of Prosecco which for arguments sake we’ll put at £5 worth. That’s £7 for a starter, main, 2 sides and a pudding or roughly £2.30 per course. For that price I don’t think you can moan. We picked the fish pie as I’m not a fan of supermarket meat and there was a decent amount of salmon and prawns in there. Admittedly, we all preferred the fish pie I make but there’s no way I’m making that for £2.30.
I don’t think you can blame people for taking advantage of cheaper food at the moment. One of our go to homemade dishes is a lamb meatball curry…I was shocked to see that lamb mince is now £8 on the supermarket so even with the other reasonable cheap ingredients like spinach, tomatoes, spices and rice etc there’s no way that’s costing my less than £10 to make that one homemade course! Even if I made a homemade Nando’s style dish with chicken wings for £2.30 ish, by the time you add the other bits on, the meal deal is still cheaper.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/02/2026 22:20

I’m surprised they allowed more than one meal deal per person.

Why? The supermarket want to sell out as it’s a time limited product

FaintingGoats · 14/02/2026 09:28

XenoBitch · 14/02/2026 01:00

Yes. Why do some people pounce on some lighthearted threads with Elevenerife tales?
What do they get out of it?

A thread about valentine meals... and someone has to ay they should be grateful they have someone for valentine. Why?

Life is not a competition, so why make it one, and why upset yourself on MN over it?

Edited

Elevenerife? Really? That’s your response to that?

Whaleandsnail6 · 14/02/2026 09:28

People are entitled to buy what they want from the supermarket, unless the supermarket puts a limit on how much you can buy.

Not sure I'd ever call anyone greedy, shameless or selfish for buying food to eat. What a strange take on supermarket shopping!

Wish I'd had the sense to stock up for the freezer, some of these options sound lovely!

double0seven · 14/02/2026 09:30

People have always been like this. Remember Covid? The usual greedy/selfish suspects buying all the toilet roll, hand gel, face masks etc.
I remember my Mum saying it was the same years ago when the NHS was introduced. People getting multiple sets of false teeth and glasses because they were "free".

I would like to think that if my partner had just been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour I would not EVER use it as an excuse to make a post trying to belittle someone on MumsNet.

And that if I did, that I would apologise.

grown45 · 14/02/2026 09:31

Possibly not what the op intended not I nipped into Asda this morning after seeing this thread and picked up 4 meal deals. I’m doing crazy hours at work next week so it’ll do for the kids dinners the days dh is also working. Dates were all long and I’ve got a good selection of things including strawberries and veg. I appreciate the tip op even if it wasn’t what you were intending.

DinoLil · 14/02/2026 09:32

I'm single and often buy those meal deals. I have to rely on ready meals at times due to disabilities or falling down my stairs and breaking parts of myself. They work out much cheaper.

OneOfEachPlease · 14/02/2026 09:34

Im confused, why is this a bad thing rather than fairly sensible cost saving and why should people feel embarrassed? As for greedy - did you think they were going to eat it all in one night? Or is this because you didn’t get there early enough and have decided that’s someone else’s fault?

Whaleandsnail6 · 14/02/2026 09:35

double0seven · 14/02/2026 09:30

I don't think this is comparable to COVID tho...then people were panic stock pile buying things that we didn't know when they would be available again, and the items were essential items.

Buying multiple items in a meal deal to eat, or save in the freezer to benefit from a good deal is not the same in my opinion.

There is presumably many more food items available in the supermarket and a ready meal is not an essential item during a pandemic

Goldenbear · 14/02/2026 09:42

People must be skint where I am as in my Sainsbury's Local there are loads of these meal deals left, in Marks food hall the same and rows and rows of roses, Waitrose the same! Mind you, this was yesterday and Thursday so I suppose many people (men) will buy up all the flowers today!!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/02/2026 09:43

We got the Sainsbury’s deal and actually will have the starter (some sort of goats cheese tart thing) as a separate meal with baked potatoes and salad or something - also not as intended. I quite often buy their deal and split the different elements as it’s good value on a busy week rather than cooking every dinner from scratch.

I’ve also been known to buy the Mother’s Day deal despite not having children.

ClairDeLaLune · 14/02/2026 09:45

Why is it greedy? It’s the free market economy. We can buy what we want, where we want. It’s competition. It’s a good thing remember.

pouletvous · 14/02/2026 09:53

The M&S deal was £25 but delicious! Beef wellington with fillet steak.

Lastgig · 14/02/2026 09:58

Well Waitrose have substituted my Wellington and I'm fuming. I'm housebound due to illness and they wouldn't have got my order if they'd managed their stock properly.
I bought lots of other things and I bloody wouldn't have.

Bubblesgun · 14/02/2026 10:01

Ponoka7 · 14/02/2026 06:47

@Bubblesgun one of the mains is lamb shanks, the jus has ingredients that you cook with. It's a loss leader. I got M&S meal deal, wagu pie, but steaks were on offer. The whole point is that it's something to make life a bit easier, for those who don't want to go out etc. This forum is going to get one big borefest if posters don't calm down about processed food.

It s nothing to do with processed food. Clewrly each to their own. I dont eat crap, other do fine.

it s about value for money vs. The crap. But then again i dont like and we dint celebrate valentine day
