Valentine's meal deal...people have become so shameless.

AIBU to think that people have become shameless, selfish and greedy?

I noticed the Asda Valentine's meal for two offer earlier this week: starter, main, two sides, pudding, and a bottle of wine, all for £12 quid. Amazing deal really and a nice idea for a night in together.

Went back today to get it... Absolute hoards round the fridge, loading their trollies with multiples meals worth, everything times five or six... scrambling for all the best dishes. By the times I got to the fridge there was hardly anything left.

Am I being unreasonable, or have people always been like this?? I'd be embarrassed to do that, but no-one seemed to care.

It wouldn't even occur to me to stock up on them, so yes it does seem greedy but that said, as we have two teenagers in tow for dinner, I probably would have bought two sets. I didnt go for a meal deal and ended up buying 4 steaks, peppercorn sauce, 2 packs of triple cooked chips, green beans and mushrooms and am making a homemade raspberry cheesecake. We don't drink so alcohol not needed. It was more expensive than two of the Asda deal but cheaper than M&S or Waitrose

Starthecar · 14/02/2026 15:24

The store should have set a limit to how many meal deals people could buy if it was that good a deal.

The store probably don't care though...they make the same amount of money if one person buys 10 of the deal or 10 people buy one of the deal

SaltyMarsh · 14/02/2026 16:36

Bought a salmon one from Asda last week and it was looooovely. Not processed - unless you count the breaded prawns starter and choc sponge pudding. were They were just stacking the shelves up and there were tons. Someone posted a tip yesterday using TopCashback - £2 bonus + cashback if you use a giftcard so could get them for £9.70 ish instead of £12. Was going to go back and get a couple more but was too late yesterday and felt too annoyed to pay full price today. If you're buying 2 steaks and 2 salmon or chicken for the week anyway, you may as well go the whole hog and get all the other bits as well. I like the goats cheese tart starters for lunch in the week. There wasn't much left regardless, just the ones that nobody likes all that much. Fair dos, the early bird catches the worm, as they say.

SaltyMarsh · 14/02/2026 16:37

P.S. Top tip - if you have a garage with a Waitrose in it, they usually overstock and everything is yellow stickered tomorrow!

We had a Morrisons Valentine meal deal last night (we're out tonight). It was very nice and good value at £15 (prawn cocktails, peppered rump steak, cauliflower cheese, raspberry panacotta and Prosecco).

I'll probably go back to Morrisons tomorrow to see what they've got left (hopefully with yellow stickers on).

Asda is a shop. They sell things. They don’t limit things because they want to sell them… they don’t care who buys them so long as they sell. Theyre not a charity and people can buy whatever they want.

Yes - people can buy things that are available in shops. They can buy them in whatever quantity they wish, if that many are for sale.

Imagine thinking a corporation should "limit" sales per customer so nobody would feel sad about getting a... Valentine's Day fish pie ffs!

OneFunBrickNewt · 14/02/2026 17:12

Or in other words, I was late to the shop and cross the supermarket didn't reserve the best stuff for me.

I think people are just skint, tbh.

This.

Yeah I’m guessing rhe op didn’t get what she wanted. I also doubt there was hoardes of people filling their trolleys.

I feel as though I've missed the problem - a supermarket has a time limited deal & people are making the most of it.......

@surrealpotato are you suggesting that everyone should behave with more modesty & only buy one rather than make the most of a bargain?? I think you are being rather judgey & well done you for being able to afford not to buy in this way

They're not being greedy or grabby

"well done you for being able to afford not to buy in this way"

Actually, I can't afford to waste that money on multiple ready meals, puddings and alcohol, no. We are fairly skint, which is why it's nice to be able to afford a treat once in a while. Assuming there's any left after the greedy hoards have stuffed their trolleys full.

OP posts:
Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 14/02/2026 17:51

It's a bloody great deal tbh but the skint argument doesn't wash. I wouldn't be buying multiple wine or desserts if I were skint!

If it was that important to you then presumably you could have organised a delivery or gone to the shop before the actual day. Why call other people “greedy” for buying food from a food shop?

You seem to be disproportionately cross about other people shopping in a shop and buying more than normal when there are offers (which is the purpose of offers, from the supermarket’s point of view). The whole thread is rather surreal, not just the potatoes (!), so I think many posters are wondering what has really caused this angry reaction to perfectly normal behaviour from other members of the public.

Advocodo · 14/02/2026 17:52

Bought the Waitrose valentines meal deal, for £25.00 Don’t normally buy them but got GH best valentines meal deal.

Loobyloot · 14/02/2026 17:54

Cook a nice healthy dinner with real ingredients instead. Cheap food is cheap for a reason. Full of fillers, chemicals and other horrors. Ditch valentines as it is meaningless.

What filler, chemicals and other horrors can be in scallops, salmon or steak? Also can't see anything like that in the ingredients for the chips or the vegetables, all the ingredients are recognisable as things people would have in their kitchen.

123123again · 14/02/2026 18:06

The don’t. If people go to Asda just to get a meal deal and it’s a nasty scrum they leave. And even if it wasn’t the main reason it still makes for a disappointing experience which equals less money.

It’s not about Valentines meals being for couples. It’s about bad manners in shops.

In this case, it seems like it's cheap because it's being sold under value to entice people in so they buy a whole load of other stuff too.

I think the surreal thing is you assuming I'm 'cross' or angry at all. Bizarre.

And yes, you're right, if it was that important to me I could have jumped through hoops to make sure, one way or another, that I got the deal.

Except it wasn't that important. Just something I noticed, had an opinion about, and shared.

Hope that helps!

Oh dear

Oh dear, why? I've lived in Bradford for most of my long-ish life and in these days of everyone crying out for diversity, well there's more in Bradford than you'll find in many places. People demand it but don't want to live near it.

OP don’t sucked into it. You can put a simple post on here having a little moan and people go nuts saying you are so angry and your life must be perfect if this is all you’ve got to worry about etc. don’t engage! They’ll keep going, it’s a hobby I think!

Surely if people wanted to cook themselves they wouldn’t be buying this?

This is true; however, how many shoppers would take a dim view of specials such as this one running out because shoppers have been allowed to take way more of this special deal than it was obviously pitched to; i.e. a "Valentine Meal Deal"; " meal for two".

If I saw this in my store, I would be going after management for allowing shoppers to abuse the special offer to the extent that only a limited number shoppers were able to take advantage, in fact, abuse, the Deal for Two VD special.

SmudgeButt · 14/02/2026 18:29

I'll be looking at the valentine meal deals tomorrow and Monday. Likely be reduced. Meanwhile DH is preparing a special dinner from scratch tonight (except for some Gu puddings.) And he'll be doing eggs benedict tomorrow breakfast. He's garbage at cards and presents but he can cook!!!

That’s not the way to maximize sales though.
Loss leaders are to get people in the store who then buy other things buoyed by getting their bargain
If you sell out of loss leaders ( which make no profit) then people go elsewhere.

You've contradicted yourself though....exactly as you said, they're to get people into the store.

By the time they've realised there aren't many options left they are already in the shop and it's far more likely they will be annoyed they can't get the meal deal but just buy something else from the normal range, or at minimum think "while I'm here I'll just pick up some milk and bread....ooh that looks nice...oh I didn't realise they sold fresh pizzas..." than they are going to be so disgusted they leave the shop completely empty handed on principle.
