City Eye: Facts on a plate: our population is at least 77 million | The Independent | The Independent

Does anyone actually believe that the population now is under 70 million? The arguable thing is what the true population is. But it's simply beyond belief that the "official number" of 69.3 million is correct. Some would argue a little bit more than that, some would argue substantially more.

Have you got anything more recent?

ETA from AI

The article was, and remains, considered a "population truther" theory or urban legend by some, used to suggest the government was hiding a much larger, faster-growing population

Netcurtainnelly · 12/02/2026 22:18

Hardly the same re the United players.
They aren't coming over on boats and expecting free bed and board etc

They are high warners paying a lot of tax.

Wait…do you think all those millions Ratcliffe miscounted were asylum seekers? Really?

cardibach · 12/02/2026 22:22

Do you do that when being recorded for broadcast? I wouldn’t. I’d get it right or at least say ‘I think’.

Ive 'misspoke' (as I believe its said) plenty of times in formal statutory meetings, in court, in seminars etc. Luckily most people realise we're all human and I can say 'oh I actually meant this' if I later realise. Sometimes I dont realise until its too late to put it right.

It happens.

I dont know if it happened here, Im just saying it happens. People dont have to be attacked for getting things wrong sometimes. He doesnt benefit from what he said. He has the right to his view.

Some guy who arrived by boat and has paid 0 tax hasn’t taken a massive (£120 million I seem to remember bit I’d have to check) subsidy for his business from the tax payer, has he?
And nobody is saying he’s British anyway - not until he gets citizenship and then, yes, he’s a British as you or me. Or Ratcliffe.

Still not getting it. You and those like you are the reason we will have a Reform government and will have by then lost the ability to have a fair and reasonable conversation about immigration. You don't listen and you don't learn

Wow. How careless. I was a teacher. I’ve never knowingly told students something I didn’t know for sure was true. And I’ve never been pulled up on errors I missed. It’s really not difficult to be accurate about facts and figures.

Yes exactly, this thread is raising all the usual bingo cards, doctors, nurses, etc etc

Yes of course countries want skilled workers coming to them, skilled desired workers in jobs that need filling, what we dont need are countless nail bars, car washes, barbers up and down every high street which are largely fronts for crime or exploitation. What benefit is this to society.

No its not difficult. I also never knowingly tell someone someting thats not true. I know my facts and I know my job, but sometimes when you're in a meeting the wrong information comes into my head. Im not perfect, no one is, my colleagues are the same, you might get a name wrong, a title wrong, a date wrong, the organisation or group wrong. Its human.

You sound incredibly unrealistic about the human brain.

No, you aren’t listening. You don’t care about facts. If we get a reform government (and I believe they’ve peaked as they show themselves to be Incompetent in Councils and because Farage is up to his neck in corruption with Epstein - not to mention his old Welsh leader being in prison for taking Russian bribes ) it’ll be entirely the fault of people who voted for them knowing they were liars or else not caring if they were.

Dont be daft. There have only been asylum seekers in Crowborough for a couple of weeks. Girls are more at risk from the indigenous population.

There's already been a report of one of them on a bus stroking a young school girls hair.
So its started already

The main focus of the thread has been Ratcliffe’s lies and hypocrisy. How do you feel about those?

EasternStandard · 12/02/2026 22:33

cardibach · 12/02/2026 22:20

He’s tried to insinuate the language was the issue so he can paint people complaining as over sensitive. For most of us the lie is the issue.

I dont know about those, because as Ive said, I dont automatically think its a lie the way you do. I dont agree with you. That doesnt make you right or the authority on the subject

What hypocrisy?

That is one person's assertion. An opinion piece written by one man nearly 20 years ago. There are no actual facts to back it up.

"one big supermarket chain reckons there are 80 million people living in the UK"

"A major, non-commercial agricultural institution reckons there are 77 million of us in the UK"

He doesn't even name his sources!

Net immigration is down

Net immigration may go down from one year to the next, but the population still goes up. Net immigration was at a high of almost a million in 2023. Since then it's gone down but it's a cumulative affect.

The BBC tells us the population has gone up by 2.7 million since 2020. That has a massive impact on our infrastructure.

I and all my teaching colleagues over a long career must have unrealistic brains then. Yes, I forget things. But I know what I’m not sure of and I check. I regularly checked with books and google in lessons. I’d definitely do it if I was being recorded for broadcast. It’s not difficult. Look at threads where the odd teacher does make a mistake. Parents are scandalised.

I gave an example of a Hansard correction below. It was arguably more important than some commentator for that person to get it right hence the system of correcting it. People get stats wrong.
