I don't like him one little bit because of his business tactics and his share in Manchester United.

But he was born here. In fact to a long standing Lancashire family and was born in Failsworth..Look it up on the map.

Maybe he his the sort of bloke who just says what he really thinks and couldn't care about judgement and politics correctness.

Or maybe he's just a bell end. Who hoovers up government subsidies whenever he can, avoids tax by moving to Monaco.

Ironically, 16 out of the 17 players Man Utd have signed since Ratcliffe took charge are foreign.

likelysuspect · 12/02/2026 22:09

Im not sure what he said was a 'lie' rather a mistake with the dates surely?

The point he is making is the increase in a short space of time.

Im not a football fan but football tends to be generally/largely a working class thing and its the working classes who feel more impacted and are more vocal about immigration, so I find it ironic that he was apparently forced to apologise due to the fans.

Think about it. If power prices are just set by the global gas price then why doesn't the UK have similar electricity prices to the US which has an even higher gas fired generation than the UK?

Because the US has a different pricing structure to the UK. They are different countries. Think about it

I don’t need to think about it. I’ve read the actual facts. I suggest you do.

The figures were not accurate. But it's kind of like saying well akshulllyyy The Titanic didn't hit an iceberg it scraped it. It's totally missing the point, which is the sentiment of what was said. Most people agree with him like it or not and splitting hairs about exact statistics does not and will never cut through

No, it’s not missing the point. The figures were lies. And exaggerated the issue massively. If you’re happy with that, fine. I’m not.
Plus I’m not arguing with his opinion. I’m saying he should apologise for lying and someone should make sure everyone who heard the lie hears the truth, in case it matters to them. It still does to some of us.

StarlightLady · 12/02/2026 22:07

I did not say he was not born here, l said he was not a UK resident. Nor paying UK taxes.

But some guy who arrived by boat 5 minutes ago and has contributed 0 in tax is as British as you or me. For goodness sake be serious. I consider myself left leaning and think immigration can be positive, but it's toe curling arguments like this that are taking us to a place where we may end up with some really extreme policy as over correction

OK then instead of:

"The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn't it? I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it's 70 million. That's 12 million people." Jim Radcliffe

You are fine with:

The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn't it? I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 1995, now it's 70 million. That's 12 million people."

So your main complaint then is not what he said but that he got his dates wrong.

I was listening to More or Less a couple of weeks ago and a politician got something out by a fair margin. The statistician managed to get the Hansard changed and that was it.

I thought it was the language that was the issue too and would be interested if the other version was ok but still using the same wording.

He was spot on with what he said.
Somebody has got to say something, whether anything will change or not who knows.

He was literally spot off. His figures were lies. Are you happy to be lied to?

Well, no. Because it’s a very different proposition. We would need to know how much of that increase was immigration for a start. A rise of that much over a longer period doesn’t really suggest massive ‘colonisation’.

It was a lie or else he’s too stupid to check his figures.
Plus the increase is over more than a quarter of a century. Not really a short time. Which is why he lied.

The consistent popular vote for parties since the early 2000s who promised less immigration. UKIP. Brexit. The Brexit Party. Boris. Reform UK??

The capacity of people on MN to have no theory of mind for the majority of people who aren't them and their friends is fascinating to me. Most people don't want immigration in the form we have had it and they don't like it. The trajectory of the last roughly 20 years evidences this absolutely

How does that prove the majority of people agree with the claim that "the UK is being colonised by immigrants"?

In any case , the majority of people didn't vote for UKIP, The Brexit Party or Reform. Or Johnson.

I get things wrong all the time, Im neither lying or stupid, sometimes the I get some details wrong when Im speaking about something

Regardless, I might not agree fully with what he said, but Im actually sick of people 'apologising' for things they think.

Hardly the same re the United players.
They aren't coming over on boats and expecting free bed and board etc

They are high warners paying a lot of tax.

Even if he had got his basic facts right, it was still a racist comment

Ireolu · 12/02/2026 22:19

He's a tax dodging billionaire. I personally am not interested in his thoughts on the country. He and people like James Dyson who campaigned for brexit then ditched the country are also part of the problem.

Some guy who arrived by boat and has paid 0 tax hasn’t taken a massive (£120 million I seem to remember bit I’d have to check) subsidy for his business from the tax payer, has he?
And nobody is saying he’s British anyway - not until he gets citizenship and then, yes, he’s a British as you or me. Or Ratcliffe.

It was "at least 77 million" nearly 20 years ago
Source, please?

City Eye: Facts on a plate: our population is at least 77 million | The Independent | The Independent

Does anyone actually believe that the population now is under 70 million? The arguable thing is what the true population is. But it's simply beyond belief that the "official number" of 69.3 million is correct. Some would argue a little bit more than that, some would argue substantially more.

City Eye: Facts on a plate: our population is at least 77 million

It is the statistic that dare not speak its name, though eventually it must. It has huge ramifications for the civil and political life of this country, the health of the equity markets and, most immediately, the residential property market. So don't f...
