To feel annoyed I can never have a drink because I always have to collect Dh from work?

I usually get home around 5 and Dh finishes around 9.
He isn’t allowed to park in his work car park as there is limited space and they are reserved for management.
It’s a sort of business park off a busy intersection so there’s no side roads or parking nearby.

Sometimes (not often) I really feel like coming home especially on a Friday and having a glass of wine while I make dinner but I always have to pick him up later so I can’t have a drink after work with colleagues on the odd occasion they do or with friend.
I was never a big drinker but I do resent having to drive later every night and just never being able to if I fancy ever.
He’s had this job for 6 years now and I miss sitting in the garden with a glass of wine after work, enjoying the last bit of sun of the day (in the summer) I just feel a bit restricted as his chauffeur when that should be my down time and this time of year I’d feel very unreasonable making him walk home in the dark and pouring rain just so I could have a couple of drinks after work but that doesn’t stop me from resenting that I never can.

Can’t he get the odd cab home?

GreenEyesIsBack · 10/02/2026 13:03

Can't he get the occasional taxi or Uber?

DanceAtTheClubOhMama · 10/02/2026 13:04

Any he get an uber?

Arlanymor · 10/02/2026 13:04

How far away is work? Can he cycle there and back?

Rocknrollstar · 10/02/2026 13:04

Can’t you have a non alcoholic cocktail?

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 10/02/2026 13:05

Surely he is responsible of getting himself to and from work and can get public transport or a lift or the odd uber once a week?

ManchesterGirl2 · 10/02/2026 13:05

Ask him to walk or get a cab from time to time. Surely there's a balance to be struck here.

AlastheDaffodils · 10/02/2026 13:05

His work is in a location where you have to drive but they don’t provide parking and there’s no other parking nearby? That seems really unreasonable. Are you sure there’s no suitable public transport or cycling routes?

Where’s the fun in that?

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 10/02/2026 13:06

I would be suggesting the occasional taxi, or a car share option with his colleagues.

I do assume he isn’t working 7 nights a week though? There should be 2 nights a week that you are both at home.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 10/02/2026 13:07

Yanbu, he needs to buck up, find somewhere close to park and stop relying on you

it must make you less attracted to him as well 😬

susiedaisy1912 · 10/02/2026 13:07

Agree that one day a week you won’t be picking him up as it’s your ‘night off’

ilovepixie · 10/02/2026 13:08

Where do all the other workers park?

Really? what a weird comment

NeverSeenThatColourBlue · 10/02/2026 13:12

What a bizarre workplace to expect people to finish at 9 but not allow them to bring their own transport! He needs to find out where his colleagues park, which might require a walk after work.

nomas · 10/02/2026 13:13

Are there no public transport options? What would he do if you weren't around?

Why is expecting adults to adult weird?

Jellybunny56 · 10/02/2026 13:13

There must be another way he can get home. Bus, walk, train, taxi, somewhere closer than home to park.

Dexy7655 · 10/02/2026 13:14

He needs an e-bike!

Thundertoast · 10/02/2026 13:14

What does everyone else do that works there? Even if theres no parking within 2 mins, are there will be places to park 5 mins walk away?

Dexy7655 · 10/02/2026 13:15

You should definitely be able to socialise after work sometimes, so no, you ANBU

xyzandabc · 10/02/2026 13:15

I can't believe everyone else working there has a partner that picks them up at 9pm every night. What does everyone else do?

LimpingButRunningSoon · 10/02/2026 13:15

How far away could he potentially park his own car? I mean Dh worked in a city centre and an absolute load of people would park on any road where the yellow lines stopped so they all had to walk some distance some more than others. Some of them have adult scooters, non electric ones.

Maybe have an agreement that on a Friday night he gets home by himself if the above is not possible

Finding your partner less attractive because you give them a lift is pretty weird to me 💁

CactusSwoonedEnding · 10/02/2026 13:16

Yanbu. He can make his own arrangements one workday a week so that you get a regular evening when you aren't on duty. It's not specifically about the alcohol but just never getting that moment of "duties and responsibilities done for the day" which is the signal to relax and one way of doing that is with a lovely G&T. It's not reasonable for him to load 100% of the load onto you like this. There's loads of alternatives - a bus, a bike, a litshare, a taxi - which of course are less easy and convenient than having a dedicated personal chauffeur but he can't have that every day.
