To feel annoyed I can never have a drink because I always have to collect Dh from work?

I usually get home around 5 and Dh finishes around 9.
He isn’t allowed to park in his work car park as there is limited space and they are reserved for management.
It’s a sort of business park off a busy intersection so there’s no side roads or parking nearby.

Sometimes (not often) I really feel like coming home especially on a Friday and having a glass of wine while I make dinner but I always have to pick him up later so I can’t have a drink after work with colleagues on the odd occasion they do or with friend.
I was never a big drinker but I do resent having to drive later every night and just never being able to if I fancy ever.
He’s had this job for 6 years now and I miss sitting in the garden with a glass of wine after work, enjoying the last bit of sun of the day (in the summer) I just feel a bit restricted as his chauffeur when that should be my down time and this time of year I’d feel very unreasonable making him walk home in the dark and pouring rain just so I could have a couple of drinks after work but that doesn’t stop me from resenting that I never can.

He needs to find the nearest parking and invest in a fold up bike.

crascenda · 10/02/2026 13:17

First of all, how does he get to work in the mornings?

I don't think it's acceptable that staff are expected to work in a place that doesn't have adequate staff parking. Surely that's not right. Unless there's a major public transport hub within easy walking distance or a feeder bus from other parking.

That's the issue really.

Other than that, there must be some compromise, either uber to the nearest public transport option, cycle, walk or full uber all the way home.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 10/02/2026 13:17

That would annoy me

What would he do if you broke up/had an accident etc?

MizzMozz · 10/02/2026 13:17

Presumably he starts work after you if he is working 5 days a week and does not finish until 9. Unless he is working 8/9-9 every day. How does he get to work? Can't he just use that method to get home.
His colleagues surely have the same issue and can't all be relying on someone else chauffeuring them around.

Finding your partner less attractive because you give them a lift is pretty weird to me 💁

It's their helplessness that makes them unattractive. The odd lift is fine, but an adult needs to work out their own way of getting home from work every day.

Starlight1979 · 10/02/2026 13:20

Rocknrollstar · 10/02/2026 13:04

Can’t you have a non alcoholic cocktail?

Why when she wants a glass of wine?

I'm assuming she has to have non-alcoholic drinks every other night so she can pick him up.

Surely there is another way to get to and from his place of work without relying on a lift?!

I mean, I kind of agree with @nomas tbh. It's not the fact that she's giving him a lift, more the fact that he's relying on her to take him to and from work every single day of the week like a child.

shellyleppard · 10/02/2026 13:23

Surely he can get a taxi home??

CactusSwoonedEnding · 10/02/2026 13:23

Agree, chosen helplessness is deeply unattractive. A desire towards independence is a natural feature of adulthood.

Hairissueshelp · 10/02/2026 13:24

So they expect people to work at a place not accessible by public transport but do not provide parking??
This sounds like bullshit. How does anyone else manage to work there? Find out and tell him to do that.
There is no way they have a full workplace of people that get lifts to work from other people and that there is no public transport and there is no parking.

BigBurrata · 10/02/2026 13:25

How long would it take him to walk home?

TomatoSandwiches · 10/02/2026 13:26

So you have to pick up the kids from school..... and your husband from school work like another dependant?
How does he get to work in the mornings? Are you sure he is telling you the truth or does it suit him to be picked up by mummy?

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 10/02/2026 13:27

How far is it? I walk home in the dark. And the rain. I like the exercise. And would absolutely get a taxi if my DH couldn't pick me up. I would stop picking him up at least one day a week (friday) and let him crack on

Lavender14 · 10/02/2026 13:27

Why can he not car share with a colleague? Is there no bus? If you're going out for drinks with colleagues then he can absolutely be expected to sort another way home like the grown up he is.

stripeyrain · 10/02/2026 13:32

He could walk home in about half an hour if he cut through the park or 45 minutes if he went the lit up roads but he wouldn’t be at all pleased especially in this weather and especially if it was just so I could relax with a drink while he did so.
He wouldn’t walk in the summer because he hates walking because it makes him hot and sweaty and he gets a leg rash from walking which would last days.

StonwEd · 10/02/2026 13:32

Well there's obviously detail missing here such as public transport options and distance to work. Also how he gets there.

YADNBU and I 💯 agree with those who say this is unattractive because there IS a solution, it just sounds like he doesn't want to consider one. Which is very unsexy a partner relying on lifts like a child going to swimming lessons 😬

Tell him to get a e bike then?? Or a moped?

wtf? How utterly pathetic.

I catch a bus and then walk about 20 minutes to work and back.

Is he made of meringue or something?

If he could walk it in 30 minutes itd be about 10 mins in a taxi surely. He can just do this once in a while

TomatoSandwiches · 10/02/2026 13:34

How does he get to work?

StonwEd · 10/02/2026 13:35

X posted, there's the detail!
I drive but I don't like it so I walk/ public transport most of the time. Come rain or boiling hot sun, i couldn't imagine dreaming of refusing.
Wrap up in winter, get the rash sorted in the summer. Urgh I had an ex that wouldn't go out in the sun due to a skin thing, point blank refused to see a Dr for years.

He needs some chub rub shorts. And if he walks enough, after a while he won't need them.

Lazy so and so.

Of course she could. But that's not alcohol 😂
