Dogs & Aeroplanes

Sorry folks, another thread about dogs & this time the question is do you agree with a recent suggestion the UK becomes similar to countries like France & America where small dogs can travel in the cabin with their owners.

Despite having absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners I can't begin to stress how much I disagree with this for countless reasons. This of course is with the exception of assistance dogs. Are you for or against the idea?

I don't know. I can see why some people would be very against it, such as allergies or phobias.

On the otherhand, I think it's a better option for the animals well-being. Especially, when travelling with an animal is for an unavoidable reason and not just for a holiday.

We're travelling with a cat in a few months (for an unavoidable reason) and I'm glad she'll be coming in the cabin with us.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/02/2026 16:12

As someone who is allergic to cat and dog hair, I would be really pissed off if this became commonplace on European flights.

In pubs, cafes etc I have the choice to move outdoors or leave. On a plane I’d be stuck

OneNaiceSnail · 06/02/2026 16:15

Wouldn’t bother me as long as they’re strict with rules about the dogs behaviour. I’m not sure but I’m assuming France and America have pet friendly and non pet friendly planes? I’d much rather sit next to a well behaved dog than some humans..

mynameiscalypso · 06/02/2026 16:15

I’d hate it. My DH is allergic and dogs smell (even if their owners claim they don’t).

ClaredeBear · 06/02/2026 16:17

I love a dog when I’m travelling (other people’s). I’ve heard the hold is horrible for them and they don’t allow sedation anymore - not sure why.

LittleCrumblyBiscuit · 06/02/2026 16:18

If you can’t open peanuts anywhere on a plane if someone is allergic, how are allergen particles from a dog or cat different? Presumably the issue is the air circulation means the allergens are spread?

Boomer55 · 06/02/2026 16:19

No. Allergies and not wanting to be around dogs.

AzureRose · 06/02/2026 16:21

What if they piss and shit in their crate. Allergies. Etc

You can't open a pack of peanuts but you can have a smelly dog in a cabin.

I hope the seat is charged at full adult prices for Fido

They wouldn’t be in a crate they would be either on the floor or on the seat where humans sit! Dog shit is the worse 💩 smell ever and in a combined space?! 🤢🤢🤮

Most people who are allergic to animals are not anaphylactic

Oh fuck that. It's disgusting. They're animals not humans they go.in the hold.

TheNightingalesStarling · 06/02/2026 16:34

Only if they were in a crate on a seat. I find the idea of tiny crates at the passengers feet rather disturbing and cruel tbh.

99pwithaflake · 06/02/2026 16:37

I support it - the hold isn't safe for live animals, IMO.

OnTheJourneyOnwards · 06/02/2026 16:44

Sadly many dogs die in the hold and don’t make the journey. The hold isn’t temperature controlled like the rest of the plane and oxygen levels in there aren’t monitored in the same way either. For the safety of dogs who have no option but to travel on a plane, allowing them in the cabin where their needs can be addressed is by far the safer option.

LittleCrumblyBiscuit · 06/02/2026 16:49

Christmasbear1 · 06/02/2026 16:30

It’s not just anaphylaxis that’s the issue here. Some people have severe pet allergies that can trigger a serious, potentially fatal asthma attack. The point is allergens are trapped and circulated on a plane and can’t be avoided. Unless they can come up with a solution to that, they should not be in the cabin.

crazykatwoman · 06/02/2026 16:50

I don’t have any pets but very much in favour of allowing this on all flights, it’s much safer and kinder for the animals than travelling in the cargo hold. Yes, it would be annoying and unlucky to be stuck next to a smelly dog same as it’s annoying to be stuck next to a crying baby or toddler but that’s life. I’m sure if someone discloses an allergy the airlines would try not to seat them next to a dog, it’s not likely there will be 10 dogs and cats on every flight, and probably still none of the majority of flights.

SummerInSun · 06/02/2026 16:51

Absolutely not. My kids are very nervous around dogs they don’t know, after too many instances of untrained dogs jumping up on them, growling at them, stealing food from picnics, etc, in parks and on walks (they are fine with dogs of their friends who they know and who are decently trained). They would be really upset at being trapped in an airplane with an unknown dog for hours and I would also feel I had to stay awake and be vigilant too if the dog was near us. Far too many do owners think their dog is “just being friendly” “gosh has never done this before” and “we he smelled your food so what do you expect”. And yes, I do think my children’s comfort is more important that your pet’s comfort. Because we are people and dogs are just dogs.

It isn’t a problem elsewhere, so I’m not sure why british people wouldn’t manage.

ColdAsAWitches · 06/02/2026 16:51

I was on a flight from Dublin to Brussels last year and there were 5 dogs on board. Scattered around the plane, so not travelling together. So I assumed they already can.

Imagine them annoying the cabin crew in the aisle. Dont think they won't.

So sick of having someone's filthy, wet dog bound up to me in a park, and when I recoil the owner says he or she is friendly. I don't care.Get your fucking dog away from me.

I agree so many people are dog crazy now that they think they trump humans.

A crying baby, a very young child kicking seats ...that's life.

Dogs do not trump humans.

If you're anaphylactic to pet hair then what about people with pets who travel on planes already?

Gloriia · 06/02/2026 16:53

I don't think pets should go on planes at all either in the cabin or the hold. Cruel for them and obviously unpleasant for other passengers.

We have a lovely dog, i cannot think of any reason she'd ever need to go on a plane.

People moving countries and not wanting to re-home their animals?

MandingoAteMyBaby · 06/02/2026 16:56

Dogs should travel on the wing

Keepingthepeace9 · 06/02/2026 16:57

The problem is the airline can't discriminate. If every passenger on a flight from eg London to tenerife decided to take their dog I can't begin to imagine the possible chaos if the dogs became disturbed or agited. The idea of accidents & the stress it would cause cabin staff is unimaginable. Someone mentioned allergies. I have a dog dander allergy although not serious. I know asthmatics with the same allergy & they have been hospitalised after close contact with a dog when in a confined space. I hope the idea if it comes to fruition doesn't extend to all airlines and travellers who wish to fly with a dog can stick to airlines who decide take the risk.
