Dogs & Aeroplanes

Sorry folks, another thread about dogs & this time the question is do you agree with a recent suggestion the UK becomes similar to countries like France & America where small dogs can travel in the cabin with their owners.

Despite having absolutely nothing against dogs or their owners I can't begin to stress how much I disagree with this for countless reasons. This of course is with the exception of assistance dogs. Are you for or against the idea?

This thread has just confirmed to me what I already knew; dog haters are miserable, bitter and can’t wait for any opportunity to talk dogs down.
Enjoy spewing your hate to each other.

To be accused of being a dog hater because you don't agree with them being in the cabin of aeroplanes is nonsense. I only heard today this is an idea being considered & felt it was reasonable to ask for other opinions. I don't agree with smoking in cars where children are passengers. It doesn't mean I hate smokers. Dog owners shouldn't assume those who disagree with having dogs in certain areas in society such as aeroplanes, with the exception of assistance dogs, are all dog haters.

Any allergy can cause anaphylaxis. Including milk, which can be airborne.

Yet you don't see them banning milk from planes.

Mauro711 · 06/02/2026 17:25

I have been on flights with dogs multiple times as they are allowed in the cabin in all, or at least most, of the EU. There are weight and size limits though and it’s only small dogs who are max 8kgs that can be in the cabin and from what I have seen they have all been sat in their dog carriers that is covered bar a mesh window and placed by the feet of the owner. I would be very surprised if they were allowed to move around the aircraft. A dog also wouldn’t poop inside their carrier, it’s just not in their nature.

With respect a babies poo is contained within a nappy & quickly dealt with & the nappy disposed of in a sealed bag. The huge difference is it's not on the floor of the cabin where crew could be left to deal with it. It's a rare occurrence for someone to be physically sick on an aeroplane & they can make for the toilet. There is absolutely no comparison.

Yes I've yet to see a dog pop to the bathroom or use a disposal bag Grin.

UK is the only country I know of that don’t allow small dogs in the cabin so it’s not completely shocking that this suggestion has come about.

The same thing that happens when a baby poos in an airplane, or someone throws up now, I imagine.

I think you'll find that babies wear nappies! Maybe dogs should too?

Absolutely not. My kids are very nervous around dogs they don’t know, after too many instances of untrained dogs jumping up on them, growling at them, stealing food from picnics, etc, in parks and on walks (they are fine with dogs of their friends who they know and who are decently trained). They would be really upset at being trapped in an airplane with an unknown dog for hours and I would also feel I had to stay awake and be vigilant too if the dog was near us. Far too many do owners think their dog is “just being friendly” “gosh has never done this before” and “we he smelled your food so what do you expect”. And yes, I do think my children’s comfort is more important that your pet’s comfort. Because we are people and dogs are just dogs.

They're small dogs in a crate so wouldn't be jumping anywhere 🙄

I'd love it as I live in London but some of my family are in NI. We all have dogs but there is no easy way to visit without sorting out dog sitters.

I think there would have to be certain planes used for pets there would of course have to be non pet flights as well for all the reasons stated.

I'd happily pay the full price for my dog to travel in the cabin

SuperMagicHappyForest · 06/02/2026 17:34

Have a super tiny dog and for many many reasons it would be amazing if we could fly with her in the cabin - and that would make my life much easier (flying - less than an hour, car around 16 - 24 hours).

However all the arguments against this are really valid especially the allergies, so I’ve always been fascinated how this is overcome in places like America… anyone any experience?

Teasandcoffees · 06/02/2026 17:39

To all the people who are talking about allergies; what do you when a service animal is in the cabin or near you in other spaces? You just have to deal with it with whatever treatments you have.

I totally agree with this. If the suggestion goes ahead in the UK I think it would only be fair on passengers, especially those with dog dander allergies that the airline provides pet free flights too.

Most people who are allergic to animals are not anaphylactic

True but some can be and it can trigger asthma attacks which can prove serious and potentially fatal.

Favouritefruits · 06/02/2026 17:45

I think it could work for common flights, such as Manchester to Charles de Gaul where there are multiple fights a day by the same carrier. You could have 1 flight a day pet friendly I suppose. You couldn’t be talking a dog long haul or really more than 4hours.

Nappies don't protect from poonamis that end up all the way up their back...

you can fly KLM with a dog if your size in the cabin already.

But the same applies to pretty much every other allergy in existence. You can't ban everything from planes just in case.

What about people who own dogs and travel on planes covered in pet hair, for example?

Lots of people fly long haul with dogs. My friends service dog travelled from the US to Europe in the cabin with them, and I know people with small dogs who've done the same thing.

How do they have a wee?

Why not? It already happens all over the world - the UK is very much an anomaly in that respect.

Most adult dogs can easily hold their wee for hours if needed - if not, they can be trained to go on puppy pads in the bathrooms which are disposed of like nappies.

Yes, this. Small dogs can have pee pads in their carriers too.

igelkott2026 · 06/02/2026 17:57

Can we please please please have SOMEWHERE where people do not take their dogs!

If you get a dog you have to accept that dog ownership has an impact on your lifestyle. It's not for the rest of the world to adjust to your needs, although apparently it is.

At this rate I'll never be able to go on holiday again, it's bad enough that people take them on trains and let them poo in the aisle.

badboss2020 · 06/02/2026 17:57

No way. No way. No way. I simply could not sit next to a dog for an hour let alone 3 or 4. DC has a massive issue with dogs barking and it would distress her hugely.

Haven’t you thought of getting a ferry?
