Context that my dad said he couldn’t believe I was eating “all that”
don’t judge the oven food, it’s Thursday and I’m tired!

This thread has got really bizarre. I thought the average recommended daily intake for a woman who isn’t trying to lose weight is 2000 calories. Assuming that most people tend to have their largest meal in the evening, 800 calories is hardly ‘gluttonous’!

I can have 800 calories in the evening and loose weight. Surely it's your overall daily intake not one meal? Bowl of cereal for lunch, stuff your face for dinner.

If I was having three 300 calories meals a day I'd get scurvy.

I maintain a bmi of 22 on 1800-2000 calories a day. 800 calories is a normal evening meal. I am being quite serious, unlike you.

Your thinking and eating are disordered.

I target 800 calories for my evening meal. I don’t shit a brick if I’m over, but 800 is my comfort zone.

I have 300 cals at breakfast, and between 300 and 500 at lunch.

That’s 1600 calories max a day. It gives me the option to have a snack or bank for some weekend fun.

It’s not fucking gluttony. You have a problem.

800 calories for one meal is absolutely fine, as long as your daily intake doesn’t exceed the number of calories needed.
I’d say most of my evening meals are around 700-800 calories. Lunch around 600, breakfast around 400. I maintain my 9 stone weight on that perfectly. Why would it be too much?

Why is eating 800 calories in one meal too much?

I really, really hope this is trolling! I have just finished losing weight and I’m now successfully maintaining at a healthy BMI so I’m currently very conscious of my calorie intake. I have a TDEE of 2000 calories, 1500 on days I do no exercise at all. I don’t snack and normally do 16:8 intermittent fasting. So yes, I’d normally have at least two 800 calorie meals a day!

I wish posters with eating disorders would stop posting dangerous and inaccurate "advice" on this thread.

YesSirICanNameChange · 07/02/2026 09:13

No idea why MN deleted my post?! Spent a long time trying to offer support to someone displaying potential disordered eating and you go and delete it, nice one @MNHQ

Yes I know

If you know that what you would eat isnt a healthy amount to have for an adults main meal then why leave the comment.

fishfingergate · 06/02/2026 23:51

Thanks for everyone’s replies, it genuinely was a fairly light hearted thread but I know if I hear any more about how my giant body is killing the NHS off I will end up in a mess again so I’ll bow out

Honestly OP please ignore the shitty comments. I don't understand why a simple plate of food brings out the absolute worst in some people. It's mind boggling.

I'm sceptical of the 2k calories advice, actually. I think many, many women would be overweight on that. You have to calculate your own maintenance calories. Tim Spector did his (I think with some kind of scientific equipment, not just online) and I think it was lower than what they generally advise for men.

Having said that, OP is very tall so may need even more than 2k a day.

@Growlybear83

2000 cals is too much for most people

Growlybear83 · 08/02/2026 12:14

Of course 2000 calories isn’t too much for an average woman. The NHS weight management programme puts an average height, middle aged, overweight woman on a plan of 1800 calories to begin to lose weight.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/02/2026 12:16

"No ethnic British women should be eating with the aim of being 7 stone."

It's a healthy weight for a woman under 5 foot.

@Growlybear83

it is too much for a lot of women. Unless they’re really really active. I would gain weight if I ate 2000 cals every day, so I don’t 🤷‍♀️ just cos the nhs say it doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone

Exactly its the worst piece of advice possible. Its even on menus!!

My TDEE is 1550 a day. I would put on a lb a week if I had 2k calories a day.

I would be massive, yes, but then I'm a bit shorter than average and sedentary.

I'd like to see how they calculated it.

Err depends on what you mean by healthy and suspect very much coloured by a skewed vanity look. At 5ft 7stone is a BMI of 19 which is bordering on underweight and not what I would consider healthy.

To lose weight perhaps, given someone is presumed to be so overweight they're using up more than 2k a day

However we should be trying to maintain weight. Most maintenance for the average height 'middled aged' woman who you identified wont need 2k a day.

a BMI of 19 is fine, its in the healthy range

I have a BMI of 25 which is 'bordering on overweight' in your language, is that not healthy then?
