McDonald’s Adult Happy Meals

To not understand the point in the silly cartoon Friends toys? I thought McDonald’s was trying to cut down on plastic waste? Surely make the kids happy meals better with decent toys rather than the adult ones!

Lots of "older" toys are pretty valuable now

I don't think "stuff that accidentally fell off a ship" counts quite the same either

The Lego that fell of a ship is quite sought after. There's books written about it.
The famous floating ducks were used by scientists to study sea movements.
(I'm not sure if the ducks are still floating out there).
Those were accidents though - ending up in the sea. It wasn't meant to happen.
But there's zero reason for people to be putting plastic in the sea deliberately so don't understand why does much ends up there.

You wouldnt know what the charity shop is going to end up doing with it. Do you know how difficult it is to get rid of tat, no one wants it. Ive got a car full of stuff waiting for the charity to say 'yes we're taking donations again', otherwise it just goes down the dump.

You cant really pick and choose a charity shop with any guarantee of what you think they're going to with it.

Don't give it to a charity shop then 🙄
Or the "dump".
Recycle it.

People aren’t usually dumping plastic toys in the sea. It gets blown in from landfill or litter.

@ticktickticktickBOOM a lot of that Lego that is washed up is still usable and quite sought after.
Why are you going to donate to a charity shop that won't want them? Why not recycle them?

Be;ieve me |If it were possible I would but these things are mixed material or weird squishy soft plastic.

There is no recycling centre I know of that will recycle these items: novelty erasers, miniature hard plastic footballs, plastic cars with metal screws, broken robots, stretchy soft chickens, monsters, eyeballs, slugs, foam footballs, foam stress balls, light wands, foam and string plastic children rackets.

The list of unrecyclable plastic tat goes on and on and on.

However - if there is a way to dispose this stuff properly to prevent landfill I'm all ears.

Where I live general rubbish is burned for electricity rather than landfill.
Unfortunately though I don't think you get to choose what your local council does.
Definitely DO NOT take any of what you listed to a charity shop. They don't want things like that.

Litter....yes I can see that problem.
Unfortunately as long as we have people who dump litter that's going to happen.
Landfill.... why isn't it being recycled?
This is what society needs to worry about - people being filthy and dumping their rubbish everywhere and poor recycling systems.
Not something that some people want to collect because they like it.

I know. It's just a load of old plastic crap. I wish it didn't exist.

I guess I'll take it to be burned then. Lord knows what that stuff burning sends up into the atmosphere 😬

I assume the professionals have some way of burning it safely.

On the rare occasions I go to McDonald’s I always have a happy meal because I don’t want massive portions. I know quite a few people who do this. I always select ‘no toy’.

Several years ago I wrote to them suggesting they do happy meals designed for adults containing useful things like a little pack of tissues, or a sewing kit, or some cotton buds, or a mini notebook.
I got a fairly frosty message back saying they never take people’s suggestions. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I’m guessing it’s because they don’t want people saying they should be paid a cut of the profits for their idea. I wasn’t bothered about getting any credit, it would just be nice to have a happy meal with small portions, marketed at me as an adult. Appreciate this is a tiny ridiculous non-issue. 😊

You want free cotton buds in your happy meal?! 🤢

Those are quite bizarre suggestions for freebies 😂

Needmorelego · 06/02/2026 11:12

@OrdinaryGirl I am pretty certain if you just ask for a hamburger, small fries and small drink it's pretty much the same price as if you bought a happy meal.
But if you don't want the toy just hand it back to them.

Because stuff falls, gets dropped, lost etc

And waste companies are unscrupulous...

The charity is a form of recycling and the dump is recycling in the specific bins but not everything can be. I have shoes in the car at the moment, the shoe bins are full locally, but thats the same for any product.

Anything electronic here is collected to be stripped of useful parts and recycled

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/02/2026 11:17

I don’t have memories of smoking there but I do recall when younger after a day shopping on Oxford Street we’d go to the one on the same stretch as Top Shop (rip) and I’d have a cheese quarter pounder, fries and still Fanta meal deal. 😋

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/02/2026 11:18

The friends figurines are a cute idea as collectibles. Wish we had got the Squid Games ones as I’d have been all over them.,

Yes but the type of stuff that poster listed (in another comment) is definitely not what charity shops want.

And much of this stuff cant be recycled.

It's funny isn't it that we assume that is what happens - yet there appears to be no facilities employing people to do this fiddly work. Where is it all happening?

I don't think it is happening to be honest. Not in England anyway.

Well we are specifically asked to put small electronics out for this very purpose... its not just something I "assume" they do with the stuff chucked away

There's a huge recycling facility on the Old Kent Road in South London that sorts all different recycling.
I pass it almost every day.
Why do you think these facilities don't exist in England?

I didn't mean you personally, I meant us collectively. The council assures us everything is responsibly recycled, and we all assume it is. Then a documentary reveals giant illegal landfills all over England where companies dump waste and the authorities find impossible to shut down. Or it's sold to other countries to be buried under farmland (being paid to bury our trash makes more money than actually farming in some places).
