What should I say to my 19 year old daughter who has already decided that she hates men?

I don’t know, I guess it just saddens me that she holds this negative view of the world already. I received this text from her tonight:

I feel so enraged by the Epstein files. It is like documented proof men are evil. This is what men will do when they have power and think they will get away with it because that’s their nature. The poor woman and kids, it’s sick.

I’m fed up of saying ‘it’s not all men’.
She really hasn’t known many nice teenage boys. I daresay social media has heavily coloured her view too. I don’t want to dismiss her feelings but don’t want to encourage the notion that all men are evil!

Yes. Yes. No.

The problem is that it’s impossible to tell which are the good men just by looking. And while not all men are “bad” a depressing number of the good guys by without challenging the “bad” ones.
“Out of ten men, one makes a sexual joke at a woman, two laugh, three fake a chuckle to fit in, and four stay silent. None of them speak up. Later, nine of them still believe they're the
"good guys." But from the woman's perspective, the laughter, the silence, the looking away, it all creates the same environment. So when women say "most men are the same," this is what they mean: not that every man harasses women, but that most men help protect the system that does.”

How very 19 of you to make these assertions. 🙄

Just to back this up.

A few years ago a friend of my then husbands was caught date rape drugging people in a nightclub.

My husband’s words were “Always knew he was weird.”

Weird was the strongest word he used, about a man he’d happily gone on nights out with, with his wife present.

Geoff1960 · 11/02/2026 17:52

Yes me but men I are not believed. I tried, I agree things have moved on but the stigma still exists. As in a women's life it wrecks mental health that's lasts a life time. That's why in my first post I mentioned the personal part.

Geoff1960 · 11/02/2026 17:54

As I said it's the silence that allows it to go on.

Geoff1960 · 11/02/2026 17:58

You've obviously never been to a women's prison

Geoff1960 · 11/02/2026 18:01

The world's full prisons holding women.

Which particular assertion are you referring to?

it’s not clear-are you saying it’s not true that the vast majority
of violent crime (with both men and women as victims) is committed by men?

PeoniesAreMyFavouriteFlowers · 11/02/2026 18:12

Geoff1960 · 11/02/2026 18:01

The world's full prisons holding women.

What crimes do they commit? Rape? Murder? Child abuse?

Geoff1960 · 11/02/2026 18:24

Yes many of them. Listen I am not defending Epstein but women do commit rape on other women, they commit murder and also child abuse. Maxwell is a child abuser she apparently arranged a lot of it. The notorious moors murders the most shocking case in history. She didn't only abuse but torture as well. Women kill their children and there have been many cases of women raping men. If its against the will its rape. The problem with the human race is it is a cess pit.

CurlewKate · 11/02/2026 18:26

For clarity, 23,800 men and 3500 women are currently in prison in the UK for “violence against the person”.

And that's not the whole story because the bar is set differently for men and women, so women get custodial sentences for far more trivial crimes than men also.

CurlewKate · 11/02/2026 18:35

There are 15,147 people currently in prison in the UK for sexual offences. 3%of them are women.

once again. How many women vs how many men committing theses crimes?

Figures just downthread.

CurlewKate · 11/02/2026 18:39

The reason the Moors murders are remembered, apart from the appalling nature of the crime, is BECAUSE a woman was involved.

EmeraldDreams73 · 11/02/2026 18:43

My dd2 (nearly 18) is very similar and there's not a lot I can say really as she's right - she also has an emotionally abusive dickhead father which hasn't helped, although her stepdad has helped underlined the "not all" thing which has been good.

It is profoundly depressing and all we can do is point to good men and people in general I think.

He’s just being obtuse.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 11/02/2026 19:37

That's sad to hear. What has turbo charged the disconnect with male and female relations, since the 90's, I'm guessing?

Indeed. But I always prefer to play a straight bat in these circumstances!

Dear Lord.

we know that not all men are criminals.

we just don’t know which ones.

hence the need for caution.

when you have cases like Gisele Pelicot where she was raped for years by hundreds of ordinary apparently good men, some of whom even refuse to recognise what they did was rape, it makes you wonder what ordinary men would do if they could get away with it.

do you understand?

Maybe you could slow down a bit and read my posts properly and realise that your quite rude responses bear no relation to my comments. Thank you.

While I don’t disagree with your points (which is pretty much the same as Peony but thankfully less rude), it is not relevant to the point I was making to Changingforthis1 who was also rude (and ill informed).

Geoff. I don’t think you know what rape is.

Actually, approximately 70% of the 3500 women currently in prison in the UK, are in for non violent crimes like non payment of fines (often due to financial abuse) or theft and have sentences of less then a year.

Additionally between 57% and 70% of women in prison have suffered domestic violence.

You need to look up the definition rape before you make those kinds of claims!
