To think there needs to be a points strategy for voting.

As we are all aware, there are some seriously concerning political views held by some of the nation.

In a bid to make sure that the vote is done fairly, and more substantiated by people with the intelligence to vote properly - I think it should be along the lines of this.

2 votings points to those who have completed university or a degree.
1 voting point to those who have completed GCSE of 3 C’s and above.
0.5 voting point to those with anything less than that.
0.25 voting point to members of society who have been convicted previously.

Australia have mandatory voting. If you don't vote you get fined
At the last presidential election in the Republic of Ireland there were many spoilt votes
Time will tell if the powers that be will address the reasons why the voters did that

Edited

Do they have a "none of the above" option though?

Everyone except you I'm afraid.

Should you really be voting?

It was a joke that seems to have gone over your head.

Did you just tail off there or should there have been a full stop?

TimeForTeaAndG · 29/01/2026 21:03

Why don't we just have proportional representation instead of first past the post?

I liked the system we had for elections at university. We could vote for “Ron” - which stood for “reopen nominations” and if that got the most votes then the post had to be voted for again.

I can think of many reasons why that wouldn’t work on a national basis, but it would send quite a strong message (and I only actually remember Ron winning once).

XenoBitch · 29/01/2026 20:15

I would have thought not turning up to vote would be classed as "none of the above" anyway.

Not counted and recorded. Not turning up could just be can't be arsed rather than a rejection of all candidates on offer.

A spoilt ballot could mean "none of the above" but people also draw pictures of dicks!

5128gap · 29/01/2026 15:23

How about we do a survey to identify people's political leanings. Then we allocate 2 points to left wing people, 0.5 points to centrists and zero points to right wing people? Reform voters could be allocated minus points, so that every time there was a vote, they would count as one towards the Communist Party. Because like you OP, I think that everyone who doesn't share my political views is too stupid to deserve the vote.

Are you implying people with right wing views are less intelligent?

User1786 · 29/01/2026 21:26

I do think there should be some sort of basic intelligence / critical thinking test but not sure how that could be managed.

AnotherUsedToBe · 29/01/2026 21:45

FOJN · 29/01/2026 19:59

I would agree with this if there was a "none of the above" on the ballot. I write it in but my vote is counted as a spoilt ballot and I would rather it was acknowledged as a rejection of every candidate rather than the possibility I'm just someone who doesn't take the process seriously.

Agreed

Statistically they are less educated. Intelligence is a nebulous concept and impossible to define.

Some spoilt papers can be quite artistic and articulate.

There did tend to be a disproportionate number of male genitalia represented. 🍆🤔

I used to do the counts for elections.

I do too and like you, I'm not sure it can be done, especially as it would rule out some of our "leaders". It's very obvious there’s a lack of full-scale intelligence going on at the top.
