To think there needs to be a points strategy for voting.

As we are all aware, there are some seriously concerning political views held by some of the nation.

In a bid to make sure that the vote is done fairly, and more substantiated by people with the intelligence to vote properly - I think it should be along the lines of this.

2 votings points to those who have completed university or a degree.
1 voting point to those who have completed GCSE of 3 C’s and above.
0.5 voting point to those with anything less than that.
0.25 voting point to members of society who have been convicted previously.

That must be my prehistoric element creeping out.

If you think mediaeval strip farming is prehistory, I think we should be docking your points.

Only if not inherited property.

What about farmers? Family farms are handed down for generations.

Exactly! I thought I was onto a winner but apparently not 🤣

Well democracy is dead in the region where I live as the local elections have been cancelled by the Labour government.

I received a letter yesterday telling me that my vote is important yet went on to say that I would be unable to vote in the coming election.

I never envisioned a day when this would happen in our country. I am shocked and fear for the U.K.

Your vote is important but we're not going to let you use it.

In 1987 Ken Livingstone wrote a book called, "If voting changed anything, they'd abolish it" which I believe he borrowed from 1970's graffiti. And here we are.....

Hummusanddipdip · 29/01/2026 19:32

Personally I think making turning up to the polling station mandatory.
You don't have to vote, just show up and prove you've been (the confirmation process they already have in place is enough). More people are likely to vote because why go somewhere to prove you've been without doing the thing that's happening. Maybe the spoilt ballot will increase, but those people have exercised their democratic rights.

I don't have a degree, but I studied politics to A-level and am interested in the goings on... so where would I sit in your point system @StarofWonderStarofLight?

Edit - spelling

Oh I’m quaking in my boots.

Mumsnet playground slur of the week ‘I bet you vote reform’ - please, respectfully, grow up.

Nah, you sound like a Tory to me.

You’d be in the top tier points system due to your A level in politics.

All of those. But points are deducted if:

You don't pick up after your dog.
The indicators on your car don't work.
You have fairy lights outside your house all year round.

Agree with all of those!

XenoBitch · 29/01/2026 19:55

I think the system we have now is the fairest way.
Restricting people being able to vote based on education etc is ridiculous. We used to be restricted based on our sex. Do you want us to go backwards?
This is almost as batshit as the thread the other week where OP said anyone that is not a net contributor should not be able to vote.

I would agree with this if there was a "none of the above" on the ballot. I write it in but my vote is counted as a spoilt ballot and I would rather it was acknowledged as a rejection of every candidate rather than the possibility I'm just someone who doesn't take the process seriously.

How would you penalise someone for not turning up to vote?

I haven't thought about that because until we have a "none of the above" option I wouldn't support mandatory voting.

You are conflating intelligence with goodness.

My experience tells me they are not always the same thing

I would have thought not turning up to vote would be classed as "none of the above" anyway.

And it is the most privileged in society who are the least keen on equality.

Funny that.
Confused

Oh I see you’re having a laugh. Excuse me. Do crack on. (I still maintain most people don’t believe in equality).

GinaandGin · 29/01/2026 20:48

Um no, Nick Griffin who lead the BNP went to Cambridge.

I'm in Northern Ireland..
Arlene Foster (former first minister of Northern Ireland) got a law degree from a "re brick University and worked as a lawyer but holds nasty views towards those in the LGBTQ community.
Fellow contemporary Jim McAlister leader of the TUV is a barrister and also holds ultra conservative views ... interestingly he was snubbed by Farage ... 😄
There are MLAs who have served prison sentences....

Australia have mandatory voting. If you don't vote you get fined
At the last presidential election in the Republic of Ireland there were many spoilt votes
Time will tell if the powers that be will address the reasons why the voters did that
