I will light a candle tonight and hope others might do too.

Silent remembrance.

I cannot light a physical candle as I am away from home tonight. But I am and will be thinking of all those poor lost souls and the men who suffered so much in their efforts to help liberate them. May they all rest in eternal peace 🕯️.

My first husband was one-quarter Jewish, but never knew until his brother did family research. His grandfather left Germany just before WW1, and decided he would have a better chance of thriving if he simply stopped being Jewish. He married an English girl, and they lived in London, where they had my father-in-law, who was brought up CofE, as were his children. When my brother-in-law did research, he discovered that virtually the entire family otherwise had been murdered in the Holocaust. He tracked down one elderly female cousin, who wept as she held him, and said he was the only blood relative she had met since the war.

Yes, I will light a candle.

My candle is in place. (It had to be an LED one because my cats love to sit on the window sill.)

My father too was in the 23rd Hussars who liberated Bergen-Belsen. I'll be saying a prayer tonight.

Eternal God, you hold all of our days in your hands.
On this day, we come before you to remember the victims of the Holocaust.
We lament the loss of the six million Jews who were killed in the Holocaust, the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution, and victims of other genocides.
May our minds be clear and attentive to their memory and our hearts be moved to bear witness to their lives.
Today, help us to remember and recognise the sanctity of each human life, that all people are made in Your image.
One day, we pray that genocide and hatred will be no more, and that love will triumph over evil.
In our prayers and in our actions, help us to show this love in the world today.
Amen.

I am the granddaughter and daughter of Holocaust Survivors. Tomorrow I shall be taking an active role in our county town’s official commemoration event, surrounded by people of all faiths and outlooks.

I remember going to visit synagogues at my non-denomination primary school, here in Scotland. The horrors of the holocaust were part of our p7 project and has always stayed with me.
