Holocaust memorial day.

I will light a candle tonight and hope others might do too.

Silent remembrance.

I could've written this myself REP. My father too was in the RAMC and had terrible nightmares after witnessing Belsen. He had always been a strong Roman Catholic but lost his faith too. He was essentially a broken man.

Same story here. My brother has drawings given to our Uncle by children in the camp.
They are very precious. We found them after he died in the 1980's, in a little cubby hole at his house along with some other memories. Rest their souls.

I won't be able to light a physical candle (for reasons too lengthy to explain) but I will light a candle in my heart to honour them. My father was one of the first British medics to witness the unadulterated evil of the Nazi regime at Bergen Belsen. Let no-one ever be in any doubt.

My uncle was among those first troops into Belsen too. He went on to take his own life as a result of the damage it did mentally. We must never forget what prejudice and hate can lead to and it's more relevant than ever in the current climate.

Theda13 · 27/01/2026 16:18

I’ll be placing a candle in the window today too. Well, an LED one, not a real one.

Thank you for the reminder. ❤️

rainbowruthie · 27/01/2026 16:20

Yes I will light a candle

gototogo · 27/01/2026 16:21

I light a candle every year, my friend’s father was part of the final group to escape on the kinder transport, he lost his whole family.

urghhh47 · 27/01/2026 16:25

It's actually my birthday today and I make sure that I light a candle and take a few moments to remember all those who were murdered in the camps and elsewhere during the war.

Velvian · 27/01/2026 16:26

Thank you OP. I will light a candle, very important for us all to remember.

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 27/01/2026 16:28

I will light a candle to remember. Thank you 🙏

PurpleThistle7 · 27/01/2026 16:30

My grandfather was there for the liberation. As we are Jewish it was particularly intense for him. He never spoke of it and my dad didn’t even know for decades. Will of course light a candle in remembrance.

I absolutely will be lighting a candle. They will live forever in our hearts.

DoubleShotEspresso · 27/01/2026 16:41

I am so grateful to not only see this thread exists, but that the comments have all been so kind and respectful.

Have spent today explaining this horrific piece of history in the context of home school for our child, with the backdrop of the world today, it has been a very sobering day. We attended a local event this afternoon to mark this, which was beautifully done and will be lighting a candle at 8.

Extra prayers tonight.

✡️🕯️
I will remember them.
And can I share here a lovely Kaddish?
Glorified and sanctified be God’s great name throughout the world
which He has created according to His will.
May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days,
and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon;
and say, Amen.
May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.
Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored,
adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He,
beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that
are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.
May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us
and for all Israel; and say, Amen.
He who creates peace in His celestial heights,
may He create peace for us and for all Israel;
and say, Amen.

I will remember.
Amen.
