How to actually get authorities to take action on benefit frauds

Hattieandcake · 23/01/2026 21:49

Examples reported and nothing done -

  • someone taking cash in hand for dogs - evidence sent online of cash only sales and also including social media showing lifestyle and purchase
  • someone who is lying that they are single having a partner living at their government address with ring footage available that they live their permanently - also taking cash in hand jobs - evident on footage
  • someone putting their SAHM wife on payroll to reduce income claimed - no work done for the business

These are only 2 of many and nothing is done, I am sick to death of it.

I can’t speak to specifics but IRL I have often had people make these kind of accusations about other people, wrongly. Very often it stems from a misunderstanding about benefits. This is partly the fault of the ‘all-in-one’ nature of UC. So wheras before someone working might claim working tax credit, now they are claiming UC and working. Around 29% of UC benefit claimants are working. It should be no surprise to find this - it’s fulfilling the same function as working tax credit as well as support for those out of work. But often people don’t realise. Same for PIP. It’s not an out of work benefit. It’s to meet the needs of disabled people in every day life that simple cost more. Many disabled people are also in work and are in fact enabled to stay in work through claiming PIP.

You’ll get lots of defensive responses OP from posters who are no doubt on the fiddle or playing the system themselves. They want people to be shamed into not reporting wrong doing.

No, OP is weird and is stalking people.
She has still not addressed why her ring doorbell is recording other people's property.

Some people really struggled when the Covid lockdowns ended. I think OP is one.

rememberingthem · 24/01/2026 09:25

Op literally everyone i know who is claiming benefits is doing so in one fraudulent way or another…its absolutely rife! However on here you will get short shrift because other posters prefer to sit in their ivory towers and pretend its not a massive problem. These are the same people who refuse to believe that its possible to claim PIP fraudulently because its “ so hard to get”. The only thing you can do is report them and hope that they get caught out ( highly unlikely).

Yes, of course...

Well, this thread will be useful for a criminal prosecution.

It documents the OP's stalking and harassment of their neighbour, so it should be a fairly short trial when combined with evidence from the housing provider and two years' worth of Ring footage.

Yes. I've been reading the thread thinking that 😂the OP assiduously providing the authorities with evidence of her illegal behaviour.

And if nothing else, zero will happen to anyone she reports, because she is no doubt on a list of vexatious reporters who should automatically be ignored.

Reassurancells · 24/01/2026 12:43

I’d like to know too. I had reams of evidence. Got completely refused and then at MR got high rate mobility low rate care.

I must have done hundreds of PIP applications over the years. I've always supported clients to get copies of correspondence from GPs, consultants etc and submitted it and still around 30%-40% of applications were refused initially.

Around 20% of those decisions would be overturned at the mandatory reconsideration, the others would be overturned at tribunals (occasionally, the DWP would make an offer a day or two prior to the hearing). The team I worked in had 100% success rate at appeals, going back years, and the number of appeals we did was well into 4 figures.

I'd love to know how much taxpayers' money is wasted on unnecessary appeals. It wouldn't surprise me if someone at Caxton House had crunched the numbers and worked out that the cost of preparing the appeals is less than the money saved by not paying PIP to the applicants who can't face appealing when they've been turned down.

I think the DWP know they're onto a loser most of the time. They never bother to send anyone to tribunal hearings to argue the DWP's case. Surely if they thought their decision was right they'd show up to defend their decisions?

TaraC25 · 24/01/2026 13:18

Seriously. Look at how corrupt our government and MPs can be and get angry about that instead.

Average people working hard/minimum wage jobs don't need villifying when people in power are rich and greedy!!

LilyBunch25 · 24/01/2026 12:16

I've been a benefits casework specialist for 12 years. The demographic of MN may be what you say it is, who knows? However its not my experience of hundreds of cases over the years.

I'm retired now, but did welfare rights work for 25 years. In my experience, the few cases I came across where people were being overpaid benefits were down either to them not understanding the rules, or being too chaotic to report changes in circumstances that would affect benefit entitlement.

But my caseload was not typical. It was mostly people with mild learning difficulties or mental health issues, and then solely mental health cases (although there were physical co-morbidities in many cases).

mydogisthebest · 24/01/2026 13:48

I think it is a waste of time reporting. My neighbour has been claiming benefits for over 4 years for supposedly having such bad anxiety that he cannot leave his house and therefore cannot work and YES I am sure on that.

He in fact leaves his house very day, often numerous times. He works cash in hand most days, he goes shopping at least 3 times a week, he walks his dogs, he goes out with his girlfriend etc etc etc.

So as well as cheating the benefit system he is also avoiding paying tax on his earnings as he doesn't declare them.

I have reported him numerous times for both and nothing whatsoever has happened.

How do you know so much about this individual’s anxiety levels, and the fact that he works cash in hand most days, etc? Wow, the level of investment you have in this person’s private life. Mind-boggling. If you’ve reported him numerous times over the years and nothing has happened, maybe they’ve investigated and found his situation to be legit. Find a new target.

To add to that, anxiety is not one size fits all thing.
Someone with agoraphobia might have their 'safe' places that they can go to. This might be a local shop, or a partner's house. Or something like a support group.

Hattieandcake · 24/01/2026 16:49

The neighbours coming and goings are visible from
my front door - especially when their children bash into our property ! The police advised us to send screen shotted ring footage, I am not sure why posters are suggesting I am obsessed when the footage is readily there and available.
They do not work, the partner living there does cash in hand. She says she is too tired to work and has a fatigue condition.

The dog dealer does 16hrs and tops up with cash in hand and benefits.

Hmmmm...And it sounds like OP has touched a nerve? Benefit claimant? Cash in hand?

Oh please .

My tax affairs and financial affairs are absolutely fuck all to do with you.

I just don’t happen to get involved in this because there is nothing anyone can do about it unless you’re an official person whose job it is to deal with those people who are committing benefit fraud.

But do not accuse me of something just because my opinion differs from yours.

As you were.

District66 · 24/01/2026 16:57

Government bodies don’t join the dots for a start.
I gave cold hard factual evidence of tax evasion to the child maintenance service obviously with the purposes of increasing his liability.
They decided there was insufficient evidence for that. Bollocks, obviously.

But if there is why don’t they take those suspicions to HMRC demand that he releases his bank statements which would provide them the evidence for the tax evasion and assist me with my proof of child maintenance service evasion

During covid, my boss furloughed me but I had to carry on working, so for 18 months the government paid me, he was an investment banker I was his groom. I reported him to hmrc nothing was done.
I dintbthink anything gets done re benefit fraud either, none of it is fair but that's life

They actually tell you all of this yet you are submitting 'evidence' about them? They really have no inkling you might be passing this on...? I mean, really, genuinely?

Well, you accused me of being the gestapo because you disagree with my opinion that fraudulent claims are everyone’s business. So people in glass houses and all that.

Also are you 11? That’s usually where gestapo and Nazi accusations pop up because you disagree.

trynnahide · 24/01/2026 18:37

Hattieandcake · 23/01/2026 22:24

Yes - but due to working all hours don’t get the chance unlike those who are fraudulent ….

Maybe some of the time you spend obsessing over other people's lives could be put towards on focusing on your own mental health

Absolutely infuriating isn’t it. I second a pp - I’d write to your MP and see if they can get any action taken.

It would also be nice if they took more action on tax fraud.

Trust me, I’ve absolutely no interest in your financial affairs. I don’t know you. But you were being ranty, shouty and aggressive in your response to PP’s post, which whilst you accuse me of coming at you because you have a different opinion to mine, suggests you were going at PP for the same reason. You can get your point across without aggression.

Just as well some of us notice. According to half the posters on this thread benefit fraud is absolutely fine. FFS.
