How to actually get authorities to take action on benefit frauds

Hattieandcake · 23/01/2026 21:49

Examples reported and nothing done -

  • someone taking cash in hand for dogs - evidence sent online of cash only sales and also including social media showing lifestyle and purchase
  • someone who is lying that they are single having a partner living at their government address with ring footage available that they live their permanently - also taking cash in hand jobs - evident on footage
  • someone putting their SAHM wife on payroll to reduce income claimed - no work done for the business

These are only 2 of many and nothing is done, I am sick to death of it.

How do you know so many people doing this?

I don’t know anyone in real life committing benefit fraud. Obviously they might secretly be doing it, but I don’t know. You seem a little over-invested in what everyone around you is doing.

You’re still allowed to accept cash

Of course! The OP must know more about the situation, other than being paid in cash, to report it.

The SAHM openly says she’s on the payroll
to bring down tax costs, just can’t believe people
can commit fraud in plain sight with no consequences it’s just so depressing.

Would some fresh air or a hobby make you less depressed?

How do you know they’re still doing it? You don’t see their tax returns

Newsflash- sometimes people style it out rather than tell you they’ve been lifted by the revenue

and I have experience of this as FIL used to tell the revenue MIL was his”secretary” got caught but would still tell anyone that was the arrangement if it came up as no way would he tell anyone the got caught.

Datgal · 23/01/2026 22:18

Tbh, I get more upset about tax evasion by billionaires. Which by the way costs tax payers more than fraudulent benefit claimants ever will.

Benefits fraud is everyone's business.

This
I know people who are claiming benefits whilst claiming to be single parents . Their rent and bills are paid for by the tax payer and inevitably they are much better off than struggling working parents.
Very unfair

So you don’t know ‘anyone’ that can work but chooses not to and claims UC instead?

That’s fraud!

well that’s not exactly unusual. I don’t even know anyone who claims UC

UC covers several benefits.

If someone is unfit for work, they will have been assessed and deemed so by the DWP. Not some randomer on MN.

I clearly said CAN work but chooses not too.

That’s fraud!

Hattieandcake · 23/01/2026 22:23

My issue is working parents have to have the stress of day to day working life and juggling children paying for childcare and get no thanks. It’s not right.

Yes - but due to working all hours don’t get the chance unlike those who are fraudulent ….

No I don’t ask people if they are on UC so I wouldn’t know if anyone around me is on UC.

Wolmando · 23/01/2026 22:25

Itsmetheflamingo · 23/01/2026 21:59

For all the ITS ALL OUR BUSINESS ones you do realise it’s fine to get paid in cash? Imagine emailing HMRC to tell them a dog walker is being paid by cash with CASH INVOICES and EVIDENCE OF LIFESTYLE ON INSTA

and that these could be currently under investigating, or already investigated and OP would never know?

You are shouting a lot, do you agree with benefit fraud

90sTrifle · 23/01/2026 22:28

Mhhk · 23/01/2026 22:25

No I don’t suppose I would know either if family members weren’t claiming.

Hattieandcake · 23/01/2026 22:12

The person is accepting cash only
for dogs so as not to declare income to accept the full benefits.

ring doorbell I have submitted evidence over last 2yrs.

Illegal to sell dogs and breed without a license isn't it? Not that they do anything about it, but you can tell the council. E.Health I think are in charge of that bit.

How do you know they can work?
If they have been assessed as fit for work, then they will be under pressure from the Job Centre to apply for work, or they will get their money stopped.

Anyone who thinks it is no one else’s business has to be quite thick

converseandjeans · 23/01/2026 22:30

ChefsKisser · 23/01/2026 22:02

Benefits fraud is so rife it’s ridiculous. I see loads of people claiming fraudulently in my line of work. I wouldn’t bother reporting and it’s not appropriate but it is frustrating as someone on a crap salary seeing it day in day out.

@ChefsKisser according to Mumsnet it never happens & if it does it’s ok because big businesses don’t pay enough taxes. So we should just accept that people get as much in benefits for doing no work as someone who works & juggles childcare etc. It should always be just a safety net rather than a lifestyle choice.

Happyjoe · 23/01/2026 22:30
