Cost of husband’s 40th party

I am organising a surprise party for my husband’s 40th. He is the kind who loves being centre of attention and would love the surprise! I have never ever organised a proper event like this so have no idea of average cost and your input would be appreciated. I’m looking to cater his favourite Turkish food, inflatable night club in the garden, alcohol, cake, nibbles, and other bits all coming to around £1200 for 16 adults and 8 kids. Does that sound average or a lot?

It sounds so fun and like your Dh will enjoy it! No one in my world would have that kind of money for a party, but if I had the money, sounds like a fab way to spend it.

I hope it’s not February 10th because on that day

Monday February 10th 1986 I came home from school to discover my mum had read my diary! 😮

Believe me OP you did not want to be me that evening !!!!!! The trauma!!!!!

Random. But same happened to me ( not on that date though), when i was 17. It was the most horrendous experience and ( im NOT going to go into detail) and my relationship with my mother was never the same 😒.
Sorry, don't mean to distract from the thread. Ignore me

Snakebite61 · 23/01/2026 19:35

I could go on a two week holiday for that.

Inflatable garden nightclub? Are you ready for your neighbours to all hate you?

Invite the neighbours. If they decline, give a them bottle of prosecco and apologise in advance for any inconvenience due to party noise.

As Mumsnet is one of the homes of conspicuous consumption l wasn't surprised to see the projected cost of this 40th bash.

Your Turkish Caterers are well over the mark. They are taking the piss.

As for your Inflatable Night Club. I suppose you can inflate anything, especially the price.Concept sounds a bit childish and silly to me to be honest

I hope you don't have this party outdoors on a windy night. Mary Poppins beware.

Can you not hire a function room with drinks and catering?

I see the fun police have arrived…

My 40th going to cost in the region of 10k!

fetchacloth · 23/01/2026 20:32

Snoken · 22/01/2026 16:25

That sounds incredibly cheap. That's 50 pounds per person.

Seems reasonable to me.
Normally it's venue hire which bumps up the cost.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 23/01/2026 20:44

madaboutpurple · 22/01/2026 17:46

I am glad you are not my neighbour as it seems it will be a noisy event. That would drive me mad OP.I hope it goes well and that you finish at a reasonable hour. Please remember your neighbours might be nurses/doctors who need their sleep. I wouldn't like to go to a mobile nightclub myself and I would be concerned with upsetting neighbours. Would you be able to book an indoor venue?

Oh give over. It’s one night for a special event.

You sound like an absolute idiot. Who on earth do you think you're to talk to someone holding a very middle of the road prices party like that?

Seriously what's actually wrong with you?

Comethefuckonbridget1 · 23/01/2026 20:47

I had a 40th at home last year and it was brilliant I had the best time! Similar cost to yours but had a pizza van to cater and spent the rest on balloons and booze! Have a great time

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 23/01/2026 20:58

It seems that some people can’t miss an opportunity to piss on somebody’s bonfire. There are some miserable sods on here. I hate noise and would object if I had neighbours who partied in their garden every weekend but this is a one-off special event. If OP wants to spend this amount, which imo isn’t excessive then that’s up to her. It isn’t ‘privilege’. She may have been saving for ages for all we know. And who cares if samosas aren’t Greek food, FFS! OP is doing a lovely thing for a much-loved and generous husband. I hope it goes well OP. I’m sure your husband will be thrilled to bits.

A good Turkish takeaway around here would be over £25 per person (as in a big celebration meal with all the trimmings, not just your usual shish/salad/dips/bread/rice).

£5 per head for alcohol?!! I know Mumsnetters don’t drink, but this is a 40th birthday party!! I would have thought people would have more than one glass of wine!! Yes, people will probably bring some, but you don’t want to run out of drinks in your 40th, that would be a very sad party! It doesn’t go off, I wouldn’t scrimp on drinks.

You can get bottles of ok wine for £7-8 which would be 6 glasses and a case of 12 or so beers is around £10-15 so alcohol would be around £5-10 per adult. If you’re costing a glass of wine at £5 that makes a bottle around £30.Its a family birthday in the garden not a grand banquet!!

Literally nothing I would like less than a generic function room for a 40th. I spent more than double that on my 50th for 30 people. I had had a decade which was beyond horrific and I wanted to celebrate with people who had supported me through it and to celebrate making 50 in one piece. It was one of the best nights of my life and no way was I going to scrimp on it when I could afford to wine and dine the people who mean a lot to me in style

Oh yeah a lovely soulless church hall would be just the fun venue for a party!

Sounds fab and lots of fun. Just the right amount of guests too, some birthday parties ive been to have had a couple of hundred guests. Couldn't do the inflatable here where i live at this time of year. Feels like we are in a constant wind tunnel, its the reason we have so many wind turbines.

But where to? I think I’d rather stay home 😂

Booboobagins · 23/01/2026 22:59

No idea where you are but I was looking at a Turkish restaurant (in Leamington Spa) for my birthday - food was a la carte c£35 a head - with belly dancing and other entertainment. Sure it's not a private affair, but had they been able to fit us in, it would have been great fun.

A private party at £50 a head sounds OK to me though you will need to clear up...

Hopingtobeaparent · 24/01/2026 07:55

Oh my goodness. MN certainly highlights the them and us culture doesn't it?

I can't even envisage a world where spending this much on a 40th birthday would be considered normal.

Entitlement and privilege springs to mind.

Oh bore off misery guts.

mambojambodothetango · 24/01/2026 09:35

I'm organising a similar party and it's costing c. £7k so I'd say that's reasonable!! But not quite the same - hiring a venue, band etc.
