I am organising a surprise party for my husband’s 40th. He is the kind who loves being centre of attention and would love the surprise! I have never ever organised a proper event like this so have no idea of average cost and your input would be appreciated. I’m looking to cater his favourite Turkish food, inflatable night club in the garden, alcohol, cake, nibbles, and other bits all coming to around £1200 for 16 adults and 8 kids. Does that sound average or a lot?

OP posts:
Onleemoi · 24/01/2026 13:59

I know! Op asked if her planned party was value for money and got told she’s entitled and her husband’s a narcissist. Never change MN.

Over 500 face to face!

How many on the internet on a forum?

I suppose the OP should be ever so grateful for you diagnosing her DH so quickly and efficiently! The NHS really are a marvel, I mean you hear so much about the poor MH services.

Having looked at your previous posts are you sure you’re not a GP receptionist? I mean you claim that all appointments go after your phone lines open at 8 am by 8.05? What sort of mental health unit has that option to call for an appointment? Do tell?

Remember, previous posts are there for everyone to see.

And I would say that being a GP receptionist and pretending to be a mental health doctor point to a mental health issue. I’m as qualified as you to make that diagnosis.

Come back to me when you want to hear "I told you so"

Oh yeah, OPs next post will be that her DH was sectioned after the party after he should extreme mental health issues.

You’re making yourself look totally crazy.

Who's doing MN dignoses now?

I work in mental health, and extroverts hate not to be the centre of attention, and they are 99% me, me, me, and will sulk when anyone else gets the attention they crave.

Prime example of everything that is wrong with social care in this country...

Me! I said that in my PP! I’m as qualified as you are?

My 40th going to cost in the region of 10k!

Yup, mine cost £10-12K several years ago, but we'd had a shit few years with no celebrations, no holidays for over 10 years, etc, and we wanted to celebrate our joint birthdays with family and friends, and our family is very large.

I don't understand why people get so nasty and judgy.

Different people have different priorities and different levels of income. What they chose to do with it is their business.

and other bits all coming to around £1200 for 16 adults and 8 kids

> For that, just HIRE somewhere

Community Centre, Sports Gym
> Get everythin delivered there

Yeah because having a party in a community centre is just like doing a party at home.

YabbaYabbaYay · 24/01/2026 17:53

Plough on and enjoy.

puffyisgood · 24/01/2026 18:17

It's a huge amount of money, but then paying for 24 people to be professionally fed & watered, with activities on top, can't ever be cheap.

That’s cheap it’s cost me more than that for my sons 18th

HazelBite · 24/01/2026 18:29

DH has just had a big Birthday party at home, we bought lots of drink, but it was the zero/low alcohol alteratives that we ran out of.......
Sign of the times!

Nsky62 · 24/01/2026 18:35

TheLemonLemur · 22/01/2026 16:49

My 40th last year cost less than half that so your budget should be plenty

Depends on what you want

Dimdam · 24/01/2026 18:36

Sounds good

oldmoaner · 24/01/2026 19:21

Nothing to stop you getting a few bottles and snacks in advance if you could store them at a friend's till the night. Better too much than not enough.

Theroadt · 24/01/2026 19:28

Griff1963 · 24/01/2026 12:51

I've diagnosed over 500 cases, and I haven't been wrong once.

Gosh. I mean just that. Gosh.

Or clearly her priorities are all wrong and OP should use the money instead to take herself on the MN be all and end all of life - a holiday!

Aloha2024 · 24/01/2026 19:37

Depends who you are asking for, for the average salaried people or the snobs haha 😂
It sounds a great plan for a party and I always fancied the inflatable garden pub. I think that the budget is more than enough for 16 people.
I make large parties every summer with 20-30 people and spend around £800, obviously with people bringing drinks etc as I am not a London earner, I’m “average” or I even believe more of a lower earner according to the mumsnet gang.
Go ahead with your plans, it looks amazing and he will love it! I would say you have a great budget!
send pictures !

Yes - it is cheap - community centre / church hall
> You DONT have to worry about your property - that gift from aunt Betty - childrens first tooth - the smell of vomit on the curtains ...
Just turn up, party away - go home - the centre has a cleaner

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/01/2026 19:48

Just remember what happened to the inflatable wife who brought a pin to her inflatable husband's inflatable nightclub. She let him down, she let the club down, and most of all, she let herself down.

Papyrophile · 24/01/2026 20:01

We're organising a joint celebration of two 70th birthdays, and building two groups of friends into a fortnight's UK holiday. We have booked the most gorgeous house in Somerset, and invited one group for three days, and another group for three days the following week. We are hoping our DC will come one weekend, and that friends who aren't part of either group will visit the other. It probably sounds very sedate to anyone younger though. A house to sleep eight comfortably, with a big central social space, a hot tub etc. How would you all play the entertaining? I like to cook, and am competent. However, if we are paying for the accommodation, what's reasonable?

It’s probably worth starting your own thread.
