I’m guessing WLI
I imagine they’ve massively improved their health and energy levels in so many ways
but…

he looked a little gaunt
and she looked so gaunt it was unreal. Also her hair…. Well her hair had been her crowning glory but it looked so lacklustre

It was such a shock. I really see now how these WLI are no golden bullet like sometimes the media would have us believe.

Perhaps they are happy to forgo luscious locks for 'massive improvement' in their health? Seems a small price to pay to me.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 20/01/2026 12:36

They don’t look gaunt, you’re just used to seeing them look obese. Nobody said the injections were a magic bullet with no side effects… they’re a medication for obesity (among other things) and they have reduced your neighbours obesity.

LalalaLava · 20/01/2026 12:36

But you are just guessing that it's WLI?

They could have been struck with horrendous flu or fallen on hard times and been living off cold baked beans for weeks?

Mum2Fergus · 20/01/2026 12:36

Perhaps they are ill…or going through something different…don’t jump to conclusions.

OoooopsUpsideYourHead · 20/01/2026 12:36

Well it's possible they didn't shed the weight with your judgment on their looks in mind.

Also, they probably don't look gaunt at all to people who never met them as overweight people.

Username19893847477374 · 20/01/2026 12:39

Why not a magic bullet? Because you perceive her hair to be lacklustre? Sounds like a small price to pay for tackling their obesity, which comes with so many long term direct and indirect health issues.

In terms of the gauntness, it's often because you are so used to seeing them twice the size. When I lost 20kg (and I'm still technically overweight as BMI is now 25.5), I had so many people tell me to stop losing and I was getting gaunt. I don't think it was jealously, I think it was just I looked so different it wasn't gauntness but it seemed like it.

Is this the weekly WLI bashing thread?

I agree with pp's that it may not be WLI. Also, so many people are overweight now (I think it's 60%) that just being slim/normal weight is considered gaunt. As a side note on this, I have been told by my doctor to lose 10% of my body weight, yet I bought a coat recently and the best fit was a size 8! Size 8 when I was young was teeny tiny. So much wrong with attitudes when it comes to weight.

Huh?

They will have likely exponentially improved their energy levels and health

It’s an astonishing weight loss as I last saw them September (first day of school term, I remember!)

Good on them!

bugalugs45 · 20/01/2026 12:42

What on earth has it got to do with you ? Let alone the wider Mumsnet audience 🙈

Gettingbysomehow · 20/01/2026 12:43

I lost half my body weight on mounjaro. My hair thinned bit its all grown back now.
I don't look gaunt, the body adjusts.
I lost two pounds a week over a year. Best thing I ever did I don't have to take any blood pressure meds now and I'm no longer pre-diabetic.

🤷‍♀️ You're the one who was criticising them.

SexyFrenchDepression · 20/01/2026 12:43

I bet they dont look gaunt at all. Just thinner than you're used to.

These threads are so depressing!

SilenceInside · 20/01/2026 12:44

Oh for goodness sake....

I guess you don't see your neighbours very often?

You know absolutely nothing about what's going on in their lives, or why or how they have both lost weight. Yet your go to take is to decide it must be WLI and to start a thread about how terrible they are. What is the motivation behind trying to scare people, particularly women, off these effective medications? The focus on their looks and particularly on the woman's looks including her hair is just so deeply unpleasant.

If you believe "the media" that any medication is a golden bullet then you are extremely foolish in the first place.

Jamandtoastfortea · 20/01/2026 12:46

If you’d like to lose about 10lbs would they work do you think? Menopausal weight that just won’t shift!

SilenceInside · 20/01/2026 12:47

They have not lost 50% of their body weight in less than 4 months. It's taken me 18 months and that was with a higher than average rate of loss.

Chances are they were already losing weight before you noticed and it is only now that they have moved out of your mental category of "very fat" into "normal weight" that you have actually been able to notice the change.

ThatZippyFinch · 20/01/2026 12:47

Maaate · 20/01/2026 12:43

What? My point was. Enormously improved health and energy in so many ways very very likely

but - looked gaunt and hair lost shine

not the golden bullet the media sometimes have us believe

ok. I’ll leave and hide! thread. You seem angry at me!
