I’m guessing WLI
I imagine they’ve massively improved their health and energy levels in so many ways
but…

he looked a little gaunt
and she looked so gaunt it was unreal. Also her hair…. Well her hair had been her crowning glory but it looked so lacklustre

It was such a shock. I really see now how these WLI are no golden bullet like sometimes the media would have us believe.

You don't lose collagen when losing weight. Skin elasticity depends on age, genetics and previous damage from the sun/smoking and so on.

I have lost almost 50% of my body weight. My face has totally changed, I have a jaw line, cheekbones and so on. I don't look "gaunt", just different. I appreciate that anyone used to my morbidly obese moonface with the multiple chins might think I now look "gaunt" but it's their skewed perception, not reality.

My response wasn’t personal to you, I’ve no idea what you look like. But some people look gaunt because their cheeks and other areas have a hollow appearance when they’ve lost weight rapidly. And that’s ok.

ThatZippyFinch · 20/01/2026 12:47

What? My point was. Enormously improved health and energy in so many ways very very likely

but - looked gaunt and hair lost shine

not the golden bullet the media sometimes have us believe

ok. I’ll leave and hide! thread. You seem angry at me!

From what I've read, hair loss can be a side effect of WLI, but can also be a side effect of losing weight quickly. I've just started on WLI and am on the January thread, where some who are further along the road with them have come one to give positive comments and give tips and advice about things like this. If it happens, it does start growing back eventually apparently!

raspberrychoc · 20/01/2026 13:54

They might have had little other choice. I have a sibling on them and they do look gaunt but prior to that they had uncontrolled diabetes, dangerously high cholesterol and very high blood pressure. It was a last ditch effort to save their lives and looks didn't really come into it. If they had been so motivated by looking a certain way they might have lost weight sooner through other means.

Why not a magic bullet? Because you perceive her hair to be lacklustre? Sounds like a small price to pay for tackling their obesity, which comes with so many long term direct and indirect health issues.

In terms of the gauntness, it's often because you are so used to seeing them twice the size. When I lost 20kg (and I'm still technically overweight as BMI is now 25.5), I had so many people tell me to stop losing and I was getting gaunt. I don't think it was jealously, I think it was just I looked so different it wasn't gauntness but it seemed like it.

To be fair, once a certain age people can look gaunt when slim, being overweight is forgiving in the wrinkles dept!

But for sure, being healthy is more important and those commenting on you should shush.

Yes, I am aware of that. The point I was making was firstly that you don't lose collagen when you lose weight. Secondly, I was using my own experience as an example of the point that it is a perception issue in comparison to being used to seeing an obese face, rather than the person being objectively too thin.

ThatLilacTiger · 20/01/2026 13:55

She probably would have lost her hair being treated for an obesity related cancer so swings and roundabouts init.

fatwomangettingthin · 20/01/2026 14:00

I’ve lost five stone with Mounjaro.

I have a couple of people who are obsessed with it and one especially keeps telling me I look gaunt. I don’t! I’m 11 stone and 5’2; my BMI is 28!

They are just used to seeing me at sixteen stone 🤢

LowdermilkPark · 20/01/2026 14:01

Course you did 🙄

TwoTuesday · 20/01/2026 14:02

You do sound rather judgemental and overinvested. What has their weight and hair shininess (or lack thereof) got to do with you? No-one died from not having shiny hair, obesity on the other hand kills people eventually.

Voicework · 20/01/2026 14:04

Hmmm, I lost five stone in a year on WLIs and worried I was looking a bit haggard but it just took a bit of time to settle. My skin firmed up again within a few months. OP's neighbours might have had very rapid loss and it's taken a temporary toll. I'm doing lots of strength training, which obviously will help, but for the most part I think once the dramatic change settles in, people look - and more importantly feel - much better.

Morepositivemum · 20/01/2026 14:04

Of course people can look gaunt and worse when they’ve lost weight, wli or not.

Not really angry at you. I was off for a year having various operations and when I came back half my size everyone at work said WTF and some walked straight past me 😂

RhaenysRocks · 20/01/2026 14:07

ThatZippyFinch · 20/01/2026 12:41

Huh?

They will have likely exponentially improved their energy levels and health

So why not just say that then instead of the inevitable snipe about her hair? Why are people SO desperate to find fault with this?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 20/01/2026 14:07

Ooh goody we haven't had a thread to bitch about people on WLI for at least a day on here

When fat is lost, so is collagen.

wishingonastar101 · 20/01/2026 14:16

A friend of mine who has 'given up bread' looks like she has been deflated.. it's insane what WLI do....

Why not say that then, instead of 'It was such a shock. I really see now how these WLI are no golden bullet like sometimes the media would have us believe.'?
You don't even know that either, or both, are using WLI. They may be grieving, or one might be ill and the other lost their appetite through the stress of that. But instead you guessed that they are on medication and made a nasty judgement about the effects of that medication. If you genuinely thought anything positive about their health, you'd presumably have said that instead of wow they look rough.
Hate fat people and fat people using medication to become thinner if you must, but at least own that hatred!

Poodlelove · 20/01/2026 14:46

Maybe they are unwell or GP has told them that they need to lead a more healthy lifestyle and doing it together the old fashioned way.
When my mum was ill she lost 3 stone in 6 weeks , she was unrecognisable.

Wayk · 20/01/2026 14:50

I have a relative who can barely walk with her weight. I have tried getting her to walk, eat better and I have told her I pay for anything that would help her lose the weight. We are all concerned for her health and told her that. We do not mind what she looks like as long as she is healthy

CremeCarmel · 20/01/2026 14:52

Gettingbysomehow · 20/01/2026 12:43

I lost half my body weight on mounjaro. My hair thinned bit its all grown back now.
I don't look gaunt, the body adjusts.
I lost two pounds a week over a year. Best thing I ever did I don't have to take any blood pressure meds now and I'm no longer pre-diabetic.

Iam not on the meds and it is so slow but I guess I will catch up with you eventually. We all get there, don’t we. No matter how long it takes.

I wish my body could lose 2lb a week as I would’ve looking at goal weight in about 6 months as opposed to the year it is going to take.

Congratulations on your weight loss. That is a massive achievement.

My friend had the balloon. Yes there was hair loss, yes to gauntness. But the hair grew back, the gauntness evened out. It takes around six months apparently.

Ukefluke · 20/01/2026 14:55

Oh bore off

whytheduck · 20/01/2026 14:55

Leave them alone. I've lost over two stone since October as my son is in hospital and I'm so stressed I'm barely eating. Someone asked me if I was on WLI recently. I wish people would mind their own business. You've no idea what people are going through.

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 20/01/2026 14:58

Well op. I take my hat off to you, how long did it take you to think of a new way to slag off weight loss injections.

it’s so utterly cringe.

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 20/01/2026 15:02

Also anyone else cringing over the ludicrous shed half their body weight in 3 months comment.

at least make it believable op.
