To think the USA is on the verge of civil war?

I was reading this morning about trump readying 1500 troops to deploy to Minnesota following the murder of Renee Good.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/01/18/trump-minnesota-insurrection-act/

If this goes through, that’s it right? The insurrection act means he can suspend elections, and the military will be fighting the American people.

AIBU to think it’s inevitable at this point? Trump will never back down.

You sound a bit obsessive tbh. Crack on.

@Jamesblonde2

Of course, I sound obsessive, I am obsessive. Part of my nature. I obsess over my interests.

Mate you realise if there’s a world war 3 - essentially a nuclear war - you’re either in the mushroom cloud and you’re vaporised immediately OR you’re dying slowly of radiation poisioning with your face peeling off.

Won’t that affect your enjoyment of US made entertainment a bit more than it being socially unacceptable to not have boycotted Netflix?

@Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot

Who said anything about WW3? I'm envisioning something more low-key than that.

SorcererGaheris · 19/01/2026 21:59

Lonelycrab · 19/01/2026 20:02

Yup.

What’s happening?

WW3…

But what am I going to watch on the telly box?!?Hmm

Thoughts and prayers.

@Lonelycrab

Again, I never said anything about a WW3 on that scale. I'm thinking in terms of a war that is much more limited in scope.

One that doesn’t affect your streaming services. Right ho.

@Lonelycrab

Well, from what people say, it looks like any kind of war would affect them, which is why I think I should look into acquiring as much physical media as I can.

Kindly - please go and start your own thread. This isn't about your obsession with TV and film. You're derailing the thread with nonsense.

@marsaline

But isn't talk about how a war would affect people relevant to the thread? My whole point is that a potential war between the USA and European nations might negatively impact our personal lives, through potential limited/lack of access to things we want to consume.

marsaline · 19/01/2026 22:17

But all you're talking about is bloody films. This is really serious. The world could change forever if the US invades Greenland.

Go and start a thread in the prepping topic about storing entertainment for emergency situations. You'll be able to have a more focussed discussion and you'll get some ideas to help you. The whole topic is about Prepping and Resilience planning

I recommend CEX

You can buy all the DVDs you wish for about a quid, including ET.

Anyway, back to the topic of civil war in the US…

I didn't realise there was a Preppers forum - thank you for pointing it out!

Okay, that's a helpful suggestion, I'll look into going over there.

I listened to a very interesting interview where the political historian said that the US could enter a civil war but this isn’t how we perceive a civil war it would be in court room and between federal and state (much of the civil war was fought in courts)

I do think their are people wanting a civil war with people taking to the streets, both there and around the world people watching on as they like the drama

it won’t happen most Americans are just wanting to get on with their everyday life and life isn’t so bad that the majority need to create such issues for themselves

DdraigGoch · 19/01/2026 22:36

Deadlykitten · 19/01/2026 12:46

ICE are carrying out the policies people who voted for Trump knew he stood for, and Trump won the elections. So even if you don’t like it that’s how a democracy works. ICE are removing illegal people so if you’re not illegal and they pick you up, you’ll be let go.

They are attacking US citizens, green card holders, and those with a visa. No point saying "you'll be let go" if that's only after you are battered and bruised, and several miles (or worse) away.

I think this is the point. “Civil war” will mean something much different to what it has meant in the past.

I have seen no evidence of cognitive decline- what do you mean?

Granted he was an idiot to begin with, so it's difficult to tell that he's getting worse. Plenty of symptoms of frontotemporal dementia though. And clearly he's getting treatment looking at the bruises on his hands.

They absolutely do perform background checks of a high standard. Americans should not be stopping them doing what they have to. At least one country is dealing with criminals and illegals, far more effective than anything we do.

Such a high standard that a journalist got a job offer despite being openly "anti-ICE" and not bothering to fill in the permission slip for background checks.

But you're just going to take them at their word that they are indeed Grandma with big teeth...

Yank here. This is the most sensible comment on an otherwise daft thread.

I’ve been on MN for ten years and see these hysterical “the U.S. is about to have a civil war” threads at least a few times a year. It hasn’t happened yet. It hasn’t happened in 164 years. It’s not going to happen now.

i think that the misperception comes from Brits who don’t understand American history, culture or civic institutions. I can see how it might look odd from the outside, but lord, you all are quick to jump to wild conclusions.

DdraigGoch · 19/01/2026 23:48

Moonshinemisses · 19/01/2026 19:21

No. You do realise that the states is a big place and most of us are just here living our lives peacefully and without conflict with our neighbors regardless of who we voted for. The situation in Minnesota has escalated in part because of the messaging from state officials. They need to get out there,.calm the situation and advise people to comply with Law enforcement and not put themselves in dangerous situations. As for civil war, how would that work? Half these extreme lefties can't go to work without safe spaces and cry if someone 'mis genders them.

Bollocks has it been because of messaging from state officials. They've consistently advised protestors to remain peaceful (which the protestors have been). It's the administration who are keen to inflame things.

Trump and his moronic followers have got it in for Walz and send thousands of ICE officers into the state to terrorise the population. Just like in LA, Chicago and Portland. The ICE officers routinely break laws and the constitution, with the encouragement of the regime.

A woman was shot in cold blood by one - in any sane country the response from senior politicians would be "we mustn't jump to conclusions, let the investigation take place etc". But no, here you have the idiot Noem claiming within 15 minutes of the murder that the victim was a "domestic terrorist" and that there's absolutely no investigation necessary.

I'm sure that most Russians are going through life as normal too.

marsaline · 19/01/2026 20:26

he's been in for a year.

And you genuinely think he'll follow the rules about a 3rd term?

A man goes into a newsagent every day, glances at the front pages and walks back out in disgust. Eventually the shop assistant asks him why he comes in.

"I'm looking for an obituary"
"Obituaries aren't on the front page"
"The one I'm looking for will be"

Khayker · 19/01/2026 23:53

I know what the standard for police vetting is in the UK (unless of course its the Met), ICE vetting is just as high a standard and if you completely read the article by the reporter you'll know that she was sent the vetting forms but didn't complete and submit them. Half a story, half a brain!

So you admit that ICE offered her a job despite the vetting forms not even having been submitted?

Moonshinemisses · 20/01/2026 00:00

@DdraigGoch Are you here? I've seen the anti ICE protests and I can tell you they are far from calm.

They made her a tentative offer based on what she told them about her military history. They didn't make her a firm offer because she didn't complete and submit the vetting forms. She was never going to get a job with ICE unless she completed those vetting forms so she never had an actual job offer from DHS/ICE. She never followed through to the vetting stage, didn't get a job and didn't hear from them again.

Minneapolis was perfectly calm without the ICE agents. So was Portland. So was Chicago. They are causing the upset by terrorising the cities who oppose the Tangerine Tyrant.

Note though that the protests are not violent. Protestors have not been shooting ICE officers, beating them up, using chemical weapons, or throwing anything more solid than snowballs at them. The same cannot be said for the actions of ICE.

True. The protests in Los Angeles were fairly violent, though.
