To think the USA is on the verge of civil war?

I was reading this morning about trump readying 1500 troops to deploy to Minnesota following the murder of Renee Good.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/01/18/trump-minnesota-insurrection-act/

If this goes through, that’s it right? The insurrection act means he can suspend elections, and the military will be fighting the American people.

AIBU to think it’s inevitable at this point? Trump will never back down.

Is anyone else wondering where the Proud Boys went? Didn't Trump tell them to "stand back and stand by"?

One of them was on his soapbox in Minneapolis the other day, ranting into his microphone. Got water-ballooned and silly-stringed.

I think I heard someone refer to him as the mandarin Mussolini recently and well… yeah.

He badly wants a civil war so there’s no election, in my opinion the republicans would get slaughtered right now in the swing states in one.

Also the mysterious Epstein files haven’t arrived. Que surprise?

And as much as people ironically in California don’t love him, I’ll be shocked if Gavin Newsome isn’t Trump’s next opponent/vance/insert a trump child, likely ivanka (the children have been very quiet through this which has to be deliberate). Newsome has been trolling Trump relentlessly, which has picked up massive voter favor. They really need Clinton/the obamas/the bush families to do a joint press statement, and if they can tack Newsome in there, then yes. Tbh I’m genuinely not sure if the constitution allows for that though.

Another US citizen killed. Clearly peaceful, not a threat, yet shot. After being disarmed- not that he ever reached for his arm. Also, in the same city....
Trump keeps defending ICE! This is just mental!

Newsom is a corporate Democrat. They need a candidate who isn't almost as beholden to the corporations as the Republicans are.

Bernie is too old, he should have had the nomination in 2016 but they went for an establishment candidate. Shame, he'd have had a decent chance back then.

I suspect that the combination of racism and sexism in the USA would make AOC a non-starter. She should challenge Schumer's seat in the Senate though.

Pritzker has been an early one to jump on the "Abolish ICE" bandwagon. That might help him with the way public opinion is shifting. I don't trust any billionaire though.

Walz has probably had enough of having his family threatened.

Please explain what you mean. Mr Blobby would have made a more statesmanlike and less destructive president than Trump.

Obviously I'm aware that many Democrats are "Democrats In Name Only" (DINOs) who just go along and vote with the Republicans anyway. Then there are the Corporate Democrats who are just as much in the pockets of billionaires as the Republicans are.

It's a dreadful shame that Bernie didn't get the nomination in 2016. A man who actually cares about the people he represents.

I agree about Bernie, he would've made a great president, left wing class politics without the identity and no-borders stuff.

My point is that there are bad faith actors on both sides. I used to go on lots of demos including stewarding. I would have given armed law enforcement officers a wide berth, and advised others to do the same.

That doesn't excuse what happened to the 2 people who have lost their lives. But Dems are adding fuel to the fire too.

Don't "both sides" this. The people adding fuel to the flames were Trump, Vance, Miller, Bondi, Noem, Patel, Leavitt and Bovino. They have spread many malicious lies about the victims. Even Fox News was giving Kash Patel a hard time - yes, even the principal right wing propagandist TV station cannot bring itself to defend this.
