I know I am being wildly unreasonable about DD’s New York trip but I need people to tell me I am

Dd is going to New York for a two week work trip tomorrow. Obviously I won’t tell her this-but I am so scared about her being in the US at the moment. I’m not at all an anxious person and I’ve never felt like this about anyone travelling abroad before. Tell me I’m being completely irrational!

I just got back from a work trip and, kindly, you are projecting. New York is as safe/unsafe in places as it has always been.

It’s as true as your claim that 17,000 people had requested refunds for their World Cup tickets.

Also, I’m from the UK.

America isn’t a dictatorship, no matter how much you desperately wish it to be.

You are from the UK, you sound like you work for the U.S. Tourist board (at best).

Gosh-the thread got lively and I missed it!!😢

Aren’t there sites that limit to that? Gotta be easier than waiting for all posters to have the same views.

No, sadly not, I just wish MN would say, "be gone with you infiltrators"

It's not about the same views as that definitely didn't happen in the past but there the extreme right wing wasn't normalised. Why can those people go and create their own forum that's all to do with with their 'politics' so this site can go back to what it used to be!

Goldenbear · 17/01/2026 10:45

Wingingit73 · 17/01/2026 10:37

She will be fine i. Sure but i would not support this trip.

So politics had nothing to do with that, why hosts the world cup if you don't like much of the world!

I have been heavily questioned twice at immigration in my life, going in to the USA and returning to Blighty, I’m mixed race and it was not enjoyable in the least. I was only really offended by the British immigration authorities as I was born here.

There were 3 million deportations under Obama. I understand why people are worried, offended or upset but deportations are nothing new.

Yes you can create your own site, you’re waiting for something mnhq won’t do.

oneoneone · 17/01/2026 10:58

An awful lot of the posters seem to have missed the fact that @CurlewKate's DD is going on a work trip. Not on holiday, not for the World Cup.

Those of you saying you wouldn't support the trip, are you suggesting she refuses and potentially puts her job on the line?

oneoneone · 17/01/2026 11:02

LemaxObsessive · 17/01/2026 10:13

Nah my DD wouldn’t be going unless/until she’s an adult and making her own decisions. I’ve been and NY is a filthy, dangerous, drug-addict filled, rubbish city that absolutely REEKS of cannabis. I’ve never been more disgusted by a city and I’ve been to Bradford! Eugh I can’t believe people raise children there.

Weird that people are willing to pay so much to live there, then.

Maybe Disney is more your speed?

ChikinLikin · 17/01/2026 11:03

You are being completely unreasonable, but you know that. I sympathise because I also worry about my adult kids.
You do need to do exactly what the police and other government officials tell you to do in the US. They do not tolerate lippiness, jokes and banter. But she knows that.

Boomer55 · 17/01/2026 11:11

NewName2026 · 16/01/2026 14:02

It's not unreasonable. The president is talking up the dangers of the country, telling the world it's full of domestic terrorists and drug users. He is making it clear that foreigners are not welcome and that he doesn't think laws, international or domestic, apply to him.

Minneapolis, of all places seems to be about to be put under a form of martial law.

However, he is clearly not to be trusted or particularly believed.

Im sure she'll be fine, and have a wonderful time.

We’ve seen domestic terrorist attacks here, and have in previous years. We also have a drug problem ourselves. 🤷‍♀️

'Blatant lies' that's defamation. Why are you so patriotic to a country that you are not from, so you are British? The world is aghast!

No, that's why I'm stating, they can run along and do that and indulge in their hatred!

What are the 'blatant lies' please explain? What am I lying about? You won't as it is you who doesn't have a clue which is understandable in your little insulated bubble.

Ik what you want but since mnhq make the decisions you’ll find it more successful to run along as you put it as it’s their site. You won’t be able to control who posts what on a public forum.

Didn't say I could, I said it was ashame that they didn't. They are my feelings, my opinion on the subject and I will state it as much as I like.

Nearly 17000 have asked for a refund..

Probably because they've seen the cost of the match tickets.

You said that 17,000 people had asked for a refund for their World Cup tickets in response to someone saying there was nothing to worry about in travelling to America, thus, implying that they had done so, because they had something to worry about.

Blatant lies as 17,000 people have not requested a refund for World Cup tickets.

Instead, 17,000 out of 500,000,000 people have withdrawn their applications ahead of the draw for the next round of ticket sales. Which will be for a entire range of reasons, most probably, financial.

You are desperately trying to stir up fear and panic in people.

Defamation? Calm doon, Donald 😂

I am Scottish, certainly not patriotic to America, lol.

I’m not really a fan of Donald either, but I’m just not prepared to lie to try to cause fear and alarm in people.

America is, as it has always has been, completely safe for people to travel to.

Deal with it, I guess.

TBF that is quite funny!

Well with the 17000 that was a misunderstanding about how tickets operate. However, I think it is clutching at straws if we don't think the hostility is anything to do with it. I went around the U.S. for two months as a young child, I have been to the U.S. Another two times in my life, all very enjoyable, especially the tour as a kid so I think it is ashame not anti- America.

muggart · 17/01/2026 13:27

This just shows how susceptible people are to media manipulation and fear mongering. Which, incidentally, is actually pretty terrifying.

Your DD will be fine OP. probably the biggest risk is her looking the wrong way when crossing the road
