I know I am being wildly unreasonable about DD’s New York trip but I need people to tell me I am

Dd is going to New York for a two week work trip tomorrow. Obviously I won’t tell her this-but I am so scared about her being in the US at the moment. I’m not at all an anxious person and I’ve never felt like this about anyone travelling abroad before. Tell me I’m being completely irrational!

Meanwhile, 350 million people go about their business every day.

Until they don't. Has "it won't happen to me" ever, in human history, led to a positive outcome?

Obviously nobody has a crystal ball.

I live in the US. I go about my business daily. I have a far greater chance of being injured in a traffic accident than any other disastrous event. So do you, thousands of miles from the US. Do you stay home all day every day, just in case, curled up in foetal position, or do you get behind the wheel and hope for the best?

The US is not the roiling hellhole some posters seem to believe it is.

CurlewKate · 17/01/2026 06:16

Genuine question @andfinallyherewearedo you really have no idea?

Why would those things impact her in NYC?

Edited

The op maybe thinks Greenland is going to invade NYC and take the dc back to Greenland? Who knows.

As I say completely normal to worry about our kids, most parents do but to think that the US is any worse than this country with our home grown jihadis would seem almost xenophobic

I’m sure. You make a good point.

@Vivi0 FIFA call a resale a refund. There's lots of people who have bought tickets who now know that Trump won't rethink the Visa ban for sporting events, they are reselling via the FIFA platform. The World Cup should have been taken off the USA.
@CurlewKate your DD obviously felt the need to support Trump's economy, so leave her to it. She'll be fine.

Ticket resales are super common and fans resell tickets all the time.

But the figure of 17,000 is not in relation to a ticket resale. It is number of people who have withdrawn their name from the draw for the next round of ticket sales.

Out of 500 million.

The idea of 17,000 people cancelling/reselling tickets for the World Cup as some kind of stand against America, or in fear of travelling there, is nothing more than fantasy and wishful thinking.

The reality is very different. So why the dishonesty about the situation?

Some of you are really desperate for America to be as dangerous as it is in your own minds. But it’s not and for everyone else living there/visiting, it is business as usual.

My apologies you'll be fine if you are apolitical, rich and not a 'foreigner' that is from one of the 17(?) countries listed for visa freezes! Particularly as you will be visiting a country famously hostile to football not f**king 'soccer'. Jeez, when is FIFA going to treat us to a world cup in a Liberal democracy!!

People from other countries don’t need to visit because, a. It shows support for the dictatorship regime

Lol.

LemaxObsessive · 17/01/2026 10:13

Nah my DD wouldn’t be going unless/until she’s an adult and making her own decisions. I’ve been and NY is a filthy, dangerous, drug-addict filled, rubbish city that absolutely REEKS of cannabis. I’ve never been more disgusted by a city and I’ve been to Bradford! Eugh I can’t believe people raise children there.

Gloriia · 17/01/2026 10:13

'People from other countries don’t need to visit because, a. It shows support for the dictatorship regime'

Oh dear.

You do know North Korea isn't in the US, yes?

SpringsOnTheWay · 17/01/2026 10:15

I’d feel exactly the same.
I should think New York would be safer than other areas, if things escalate id think it would take a while to happen there. So she’s there for only two weeks and going soon.

Wasn't it a jihadi who committed the Manchester arena atrocity? Ditto the July 7th London bombings?

Bombings and atrocities happen everywhere. I'd advise against a holiday in Israel or Iran as tensions are heightened to say the least, anywhere else we all sadly have to take our chances.

It's true though. The external lens is very different to your insulated notions of your country.

Yes but N Korea is predictably bad, it's the unpredictability playing out week by week which makes it scarey

Nearly 17000 have asked for a refund..

And? That’s a quite small number out of the number of spectators.

But regardless of the World Cup , that doesn’t mean thousands of other Brits aren’t going there for holidays and already working and living there! I’m not sure why you’ve brought it up. It’s not like the OPs child will be some kind of lonely Brit out there.

One example - Air lingus have recently changed some of their flights from Manchester airport to Orlando and now people have to fly via Dublin. The direct virgin flights are now selling out and prices rocketing because people are desperate to save their holidays. Not everyone is avoiding the USA. Many are spending £££ to get there!

Aren’t there sites that limit to that? Gotta be easier than waiting for all posters to have the same views.

It’s as true as your claim that 17,000 people had requested refunds for their World Cup tickets.

Also, I’m from the UK.

America isn’t a dictatorship, no matter how much you desperately wish it to be.

It’s not even true.

17,000 people are not trying to cancel or resell their World Cup tickets.

These are people that don’t have tickets yet.

To be in with a chance to even purchase tickets to the World Cup, you need to submit an application to be entered into a draw.

500 million people have applied.

17,000 of those people have since withdrawn their applications ahead of the draw for the next round of ticket sales. 17,000 out of 500,000,000!

Wingingit73 · 17/01/2026 10:37

She will be fine i. Sure but i would not support this trip.
