I know I am being wildly unreasonable about DD’s New York trip but I need people to tell me I am

Dd is going to New York for a two week work trip tomorrow. Obviously I won’t tell her this-but I am so scared about her being in the US at the moment. I’m not at all an anxious person and I’ve never felt like this about anyone travelling abroad before. Tell me I’m being completely irrational!

We’ve just been hit with tariffs for opposing Trump’s illegal attempt at seizing Greenland. Is that mainstream media propaganda? What a lovely way America treats its allies these days.

Again, I’m sure this will have no bearing on how OP’s daughter will enjoy her trip but surely the Trump’s America defenders on here have to admit that he is the aggressor here?

I'm the last person to defend Trump's America, and clearly he is the aggressor, but it's still perfectly reasonable to say that OP's daughter will be absolutely fine on her business trip there.

the Trump’s America defenders on here

Trump’s America defenders?

But America is perfectly safe to travel to. Remaining rational and pointing this out doesn’t make one a “Trump’s America defender”.

Chill.

You said it yourself:

”I’m sure this will have no bearing on how OP’s daughter will enjoy her trip”.

It wasn’t so much that you’d bought them - it was more the fact you felt the need to mention it. Couldn’t you have just said you’d bought your DD some socks? Why add that they’re ’cashmere socks’?

Because it was relevant in a post intended to be mildly humorous and self deprecating. And you then went on to criticise my political beliefs-canMt actually remember what you said. Hey ho. Happy to provide an opportunity for you to make yourself feel important by attacking other people. Fill your boots.

It didn’t come across as mildly humorous or self-deprecating to me - it came across as superior and smug.

And where did I criticise you for your political beliefs or personally attack you in my post?

I said I think your DD will be very safe on the work trip. I also said I thought you started the thread to show people you’re a wealthy and loving parent and to show in a coded way that you’re ‘good’ because you’re against Trump. I’m not critical of your beliefs - I’m also against Trump.

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/01/2026 18:30

I'm reading this thread knowing that one of my adult offspring is refusing to go to the US for work because the situation is so uncertain.

I'm not saying either decision is right or wrong but I can see both sides.

independentfriend · 17/01/2026 18:36

On a work trip she should have back up from both US/UK sides so is probably safer than on a purely tourist trip. She's hopefully got a local who can pass on bits of local knowledge. And she's probably spending most of her time doing work stuff.

Has she checked she's got the right kind of visa?

Is there travel insurance? I have no idea how that is done for work trips but it's obviously needed given the costs of a trip to a US hospital.

The practical thing you could do is grab contact details for the British consulate and for immigration lawyers based locally to where she's going.

Other practical thing - jet lag going out will make her wake up very early - that might be a good time to talk to each other if you usually do. It's also worth her being aware of what's open at 4-5am that's safe enough to go to (hotel gym, local coffee shop etc) if she doesn't want to stay in her hotel room.

I wouldn't go to the US at the moment and think people should minimise travel there till after Trump is out of the White House but it is probably safe enough for Brits.

Yes, of course there are but that's not the question, the OP's DD isn't there and that was the question. Why you are repeatedly informing me of people going to Disneyland I don't know, perhaps it is you that works for the Tourist board. How many Canadians are no longer going to Florida? It's called having principles.

I said there are thousands of brits there and you said ‘really?’

And started on about World Cup tickets as though that was of any relevance.

You don’t seem to understand plenty of people are still going to the USA and are there already. You seem to have needed some examples.

hadenoughofsnowflakes · 17/01/2026 19:12

I’ve just got back - nothing to worry about. Honestly New Yorkers are the friendliest people I’ve ever met! My husband was nervous about going and couldn’t believe what a lively atmosphere the place has got, he wants to take the kids next year

ExpectZeroContext · 16/01/2026 12:59

Kindly, you tell yourself this is about safety, when in truth it is about control, and your inability to tolerate a world you cannot police. Grow up.

You seem nice

Buffs · 17/01/2026 19:31

I live in the US and whilst I viscerally loathe Trump he hasn’t yet managed to ruin my day to day life which is pretty good. Funnily enough some Americans I come across are too terrified to visit the UK which they believe has been decimated by Sharia law and stabbings.

TheBirdintheCave · 17/01/2026 20:18

We’re travelling to the US this year for my best friend’s wedding. I haven’t visited in ten years and am a bit wary of it. Everything feels quite tense at the moment and I also have concerns about air traffic controllers being overworked and understaffed. We’re still going though and hopefully everything will go smoothly :)

Sharptonguedwoman · 17/01/2026 20:21

surreygirly · 16/01/2026 13:35

No its true

I don’t think so. I wouldn’t be travelling to the USA any time soon and I understand this mum’s concern. Not control, reason concern. I don’t think we can see the subtleties of what’s going on. I find the whole situation in the USA deeply worrying.

I get the anxiety but she will be fine. Especially if white British.

I wouldn’t go to the us right now if you paid me but not because of safety concerns. Mostly cos I wouldn’t want any of my cash going towards the us government in taxes and don’t want to be seen to support that orange maniac in any way.

Came here to type the exact same thing! I won’t be going to the US until that twat and his twattish acolytes are out of power. If they ever are…

AlexStocks · 17/01/2026 22:44

Most parts of the US are FINE physically. Our emotional trauma...? That'll take a while. But she should be OK in NY state. For the life of me though, why would anyone want to come this way? I'm hankering to go that way.

Thefsm · 17/01/2026 22:48

I drove up to New York last week. It’s not scary at all if you mean regarding ICE and stuff. The east coast in general is pretty safe - I’m a Brit living in phillly and was terrified at first of all the shootings etc and violence but nobody has ever tried to harm me in 10 years here. The shootings have all been drug or gang related in my vicinity and even the drug dealers who run the crack house on my corner always stop their shiny dark tinted windows to tell me they love my husky and are polite to me.

it’s not stupid to be afraid with the state of things and the news every day, but touristy places are going to be far safer than where I live and she will be fine. If something happens and she needs rescuing you can always pm me I can drive up there I’m only 2 hours away.

I worried about cashmere socks being hard wearing enough and whether she would wash them properly.

Has she arrived and settled in ok?

Hundreds, probably thousands of Brits arrive in NY every day, some for work, some as tourists. They're all fine. There isn't any backup needed, work will have taken care of her visa. She doesn't need a local with local knowledge. She will not need the British consulate or immigration lawyers unless she's planning to get drunk and disorderly and get into a brawl with immigration officials. NYC at 5am is probably one of the safest places you'll ever find - there are always plenty of people about.

She will be fine. It's NYC, not Yemen.

*I don't disagree with you about Trump, however.

Mykneesareshot · 18/01/2026 09:28

Something could happen wherever you are. I'm sure the people on the Sousse beach didn't expect to be shot, it's not just the US.

BlueRedCat · 18/01/2026 09:53

Haven’t managed to get through the thread yet but genuinely confused about the worry going to the US. I go at least once a year, my DH goes about 6 times a year. My DH and teenage DS were in NY as few months ago. I have visited 35 states to date. Never had a single issue. Never had any issues in immigration. Always had a great time. What is the specific worry?
