I know I am being wildly unreasonable about DD’s New York trip but I need people to tell me I am

Dd is going to New York for a two week work trip tomorrow. Obviously I won’t tell her this-but I am so scared about her being in the US at the moment. I’m not at all an anxious person and I’ve never felt like this about anyone travelling abroad before. Tell me I’m being completely irrational!

What is to say something couldn't happen at home? Yes you know you are being irrational but other irrational people will agree with you which may keep you irrational

Really 😬. Why are so many thousands asking for a refund for the world cup then?

yes really - why would you think there wasn’t? Plenty are still going. And not everyone goes for a World Cup..?

You should join the Orlando Facebook groups. Full of people off to Disney etc

What is supposed to be wrong with NYC? I was there recently, and my best friend lives and works there. I'm not sure what you're afraid of, exactly?

Probably the loads of stories about ICE goons attacking and killing people for no reason? However NYC should be fine, they tend to only attack helpless women and children who can't defend themselves.

NoKidsSendDogs · 16/01/2026 22:24

FiatLuxAdAstra · 16/01/2026 20:20

Unless she’s an influencer posting anti-American videos on social media and her “work trip” is to join ICE protesters, then she will be fine.

Edited

Being anti ice is not being anti American. Ice are thugs, mostly morons (can't even pass an open book test), racist and incompetent. Incompetence is the only thing administration knows. I hope the protests carry on and I say this as an American who fucking hates ice.

I agree that what is happening is terrifying. And horrifying in a supposedly democratic country that supposedly champions free speech.

I noted that a friend (a professional with reason to travel to the states on occasion) sent me a video (Trump reading the instructions within the speech text) via Messenger rather than linking on Facebook as she would normally have done, a strong sign of how seriously this is seen.

It isn’t new. I was involved in putting together an international symposium / conference / festival in Cuba in the late 1990s. We had to arrange for American colleagues to travel across to a particular Western country on our side of the Atlantic and from there buy new air tickets to Cuba, with their Cuban visas issued while they were in that country, and then to travel to Cuba from there. While there we were totally aware of surveillance by the Cuban regime. The surveillance from … European … countries which became clear while we were there and on our return was a surprise.

I was aggressively warned off a particular slightly controversial project.

I have looked after Palestinian artists, those from despotic regimes in various countries and the risks that can easily be realised.

So, one way and another, I am not naive.

And if CurlewKate’s Dd is aware and professional I stand by my opinion that she is not at great risk.

Which is not to say that what is happening under Trump is not horrific.

rememberingthem · 16/01/2026 23:01

I travel here weekly and its absolutely fine! Nothing has changed!

Nearly 17000 have asked for a refund..

Hopingforaholiday · 16/01/2026 23:26

If she’s entering on ESTA tell her to use MPC app, it’s free and saves long wait for immigration.

LemonyCurd · 16/01/2026 23:28

I think you need to take a deep breath and apply some critical thinking. Not to mention cut down social media/mainstream media consumption. Why are you falling for all the rhetoric? That’s what you should be worried about, not your daughter’s fabulous sounding trip.

Do you read the news?

If we are at the point where some people think New York is too unsafe to travel to, then perhaps switching off from the news would be beneficial for them.

This.

It’s crazy.

What are you fearful of exactly?

Do you live under a rock? 🙄

Kindly, you tell yourself this is about safety, when in truth it is about control, and your inability to tolerate a world you cannot police. Grow up.
what?!

Dollyfloss · 16/01/2026 23:32

This.

It’s crazy.

NYC is quite safe, for the simple reason that it’s a lot safer for 3000 of Trump’s paid thugs to make trouble in a city of 300 thousand then in a city of 12 million. So ICE has largely avoided it.

Goldenbear · 16/01/2026 23:25

Nearly 17000 have asked for a refund..

Eh, no they haven’t!

World cup tickets are non refundable. You are not able to cancel the ticket once it has been purchased. FIFA has a strict policy regarding this.

The figure you quote is the number of people who have withdrawn their name from the draw for the next round of ticket sales.

To give some perspective - over 500 million people have applied for tickets.

People withdraw for all sorts of reason - financial, personal, in order to submit an updated application for tickets etc.

Stop with the hysteria.

How? They are not refundable but nice try

andfinallyhereweare · 17/01/2026 01:03

Genuine question op @CurlewKate why would cashmere socks keep her safe? From what frost bite? 😂😂

'For me it would be the moral equivalent of going to 1930s Germany for a holiday.'

For me too. Obviously this thread has brought out the best of the blind, selfish and stupid.

Ponoka7 · 17/01/2026 02:09

@Vivi0 FIFA call a resale a refund. There's lots of people who have bought tickets who now know that Trump won't rethink the Visa ban for sporting events, they are reselling via the FIFA platform. The World Cup should have been taken off the USA.
@CurlewKate your DD obviously felt the need to support Trump's economy, so leave her to it. She'll be fine.

Surely that description fits the person who has booked the holiday? Posters are just commenting. The OP's DD is white British, she has nothing to worry about.

HelenaWaiting · 17/01/2026 02:12

I don't think there's a safety issue. I do wonder what sort of person would legitimise Trump's vile regime by travelling there.

I don’t think ICE are going to turning up to this random woman’s hotel room.

Recently in California. This post is massively an over reaction. Hope your daughter has a great trip!

GameofPhones · 17/01/2026 03:00

I wouldn't go myself because Trump is unpredictable, is revelling in unbridled power, malicious, and believes no one will disobey his wildest commands (and they haven't, up to now).
