I agree that what is happening is terrifying. And horrifying in a supposedly democratic country that supposedly champions free speech.
I noted that a friend (a professional with reason to travel to the states on occasion) sent me a video (Trump reading the instructions within the speech text) via Messenger rather than linking on Facebook as she would normally have done, a strong sign of how seriously this is seen.
It isn’t new. I was involved in putting together an international symposium / conference / festival in Cuba in the late 1990s. We had to arrange for American colleagues to travel across to a particular Western country on our side of the Atlantic and from there buy new air tickets to Cuba, with their Cuban visas issued while they were in that country, and then to travel to Cuba from there. While there we were totally aware of surveillance by the Cuban regime. The surveillance from … European … countries which became clear while we were there and on our return was a surprise.
I was aggressively warned off a particular slightly controversial project.
I have looked after Palestinian artists, those from despotic regimes in various countries and the risks that can easily be realised.
So, one way and another, I am not naive.
And if CurlewKate’s Dd is aware and professional I stand by my opinion that she is not at great risk.
Which is not to say that what is happening under Trump is not horrific.
