I know I am being wildly unreasonable about DD’s New York trip but I need people to tell me I am

Dd is going to New York for a two week work trip tomorrow. Obviously I won’t tell her this-but I am so scared about her being in the US at the moment. I’m not at all an anxious person and I’ve never felt like this about anyone travelling abroad before. Tell me I’m being completely irrational!

Kindly, you tell yourself this is about safety, when in truth it is about control, and your inability to tolerate a world you cannot police. Grow up.

Lol, what's the weather like in Moscow?

Twit.

This made me laugh. Thank you. Cheered me up no end! Please take this Mumsnet Award for the biggest stretch ever.

I just don’t really understand why you’re posting though, apart from if it’s to mention the cashmere socks and your implicit opposition to Trump.

What I do understand though is if you’re posting with the general worry that family members have for each other and that parents have for their kids - especially when they’re on holiday.

But it doesn’t sound like that. You’ve said here you’re worried about “the possibility of an escalation of international tension around Greenland and/or Iran.” Your DD won’t be in Greenland or Iran. She’ll be in NYC, likely shuttling between an office, a hotel and a restaurant. Those are genuinely the safest places for her to be. And your DD’s work will make 100% sure she is safe.

What does ‘what is the weather like in Moscow?’ mean? Never heard that before - and have Googled it too, but no dice.

HighStreetOtter · 16/01/2026 20:13

Dd is going in March. It hadn’t crossed my mind to worry and now I’ve thought about it I still won’t worry. I’m sure that NY for tourists is as safe as any large city.

Here4thechocs · 16/01/2026 20:18

Everyone asking why poster is worried about daughter travelling to the US as though everything we’ve been seeing happening over there is simply a figment of our imaginations or if indeed NYC isn’t a part of the US. I’d be worried , too, if that was my child going there.

Unless she’s an influencer posting anti-American videos on social media and her “work trip” is to join ICE protesters, then she will be fine.

I actually think that if I do have a legitimate cause for concern it’s what someone said earlier- the possibility of an escalation of international tension around Greenland and/or Iran.

Incidentally-it’s possible to tell someone you think they are being unreasonable without actually being offensive. Something some of you might want to consider.

Why would those things impact her in NYC?

It's implying that poster is a Russian bot.

How would either of those places affect her thousands or miles away? She’s closer in the UK!
Iran aren’t about to send troops to NYC

fashionqueen0123 · 16/01/2026 20:28

The only thing she needs to be seriously careful about is does she have a work visa or Esta?
People used to go to the USA on Estas for work meetings (and I think technically you can) but recently even some British people have been being rejected for that. One company I know sent out an email telling employees to say they are on holidays after one lot got sent back on the next flight home after mentioning ‘work’

I for one am shocked that supporters of a foreign head of state who has essentially invaded several of his own cities would have trouble expressing themselves civilly.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that I have never encountered this behavior among the far-right before.

You don't have to be near Greenland to be affected by the US potentially disbanding NATO to annexe it. If that happens when you're in the US you're in a country that has effectively just declared war on your own. Not to worry you op sorry 😂. I don't think this will happen, fingers crossed anyway.

I also think - and hope - it won’t happen. And if it does happen, OP, it’ll affect you and us - not just your DD.

Goldenbear · 16/01/2026 21:02

I wouldn't want my adult DC to go, sorry OP.

It is just like going to London. Massive territory with all things going on. Most people go home at the end of day, and sleep safe

I went to New York when I was 6, I was born and grew up in London, it was nothing like London then.

Thousands of brits live and will be on holidays in the USA. This is really not something to worry about for a work trip.

My daughter lives and works in New York. Am I worried? No. Well… I’m concerned that she has a dreadful cough atm and might need antibiotics and it’s just as difficult (for different reasons) to see a doctor there as it is here.

So yes I personally do think you’re being irrational. It’s just a work trip, she’ll be fine.

Really 😬. Why are so many thousands asking for a refund for the world cup then?

According to reports 16700 refund requests, they must be concerned.

Norugratsatall · 16/01/2026 21:54

DD flew home here for Xmas along with her boyfriend, and she sailed through immigration at JFK on the way back. She said it was the easiest bit of the journey, having struggled to get an uber and discovered that her suitcase from the hold had broken. She is mixed race as well.

Vodkamartini3olives · 16/01/2026 21:56

@Fuggleup- I didn't say they were only detaining Criminals. I was staying they are not regularly rounding up/ knocking on doors and detaining US Citizens. Just because an illegal immigrant hasn't commited a crime or has lived here for a long time doesn't mean they have a right to remain.
Last time I looked the Guardian is not what I would consider a neutral news source.
