And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

OP posts:
fruitfly3 · 13/01/2026 13:25

Mine were both early. But, seemingly from nowhere, they’ve adopted ‘mama’ instead which is nice 😊

Clefable · 13/01/2026 13:26

And I think YWBU to ask her not to, it’s a natural evolution, hard as it may be for you!

Scottishlassie01 · 13/01/2026 13:27

I’ve never been called mummy. I’ve always been Mum then around 7 eldest changed it to Mumsy and around same age youngest starring calling me mother. Both now adults and nothings changed.

This is the second post I've seen about this issue in a shortish time. Do people really care that much about 'Mum' vs 'Mummy'? That said, most people I know seem to say 'Mummy' into adulthood. I don't have children, but if I had I wouldn't want to be called either name. I would want my children to call me by my first name, as I did my own parents.

yes.
hth.

but tbf if you've never used Mum or Mummy yourself and wouldn't want it used for you, you're obviously not going to get the importance so to speak.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/01/2026 13:27

My 13 year old alternates between mummy, bro, bruh, l'il mummy, l'il bro, mother and oompa loompa (I'm short, he is very tall),
The only thing that hasn't stuck is Mum 🤷

Uptightmumma · 13/01/2026 13:27

Be thankful you haven’t got boys I get call bro

Wait til its "marjay" "oi ere are ma" "mumdem" or "broski"

Mummy will come back mid teen when things are wanted !!

Never heard of marjay before! What does it mean?

Mine were all around 5 when they switched from mummy to Mum (coinciding with starting school).

DC10 still says Mummy sometimes but in more of a funny way, like if I pick her up from school it'll be 'Mummmeeee!'. I also get Mother quite often which I actually quite like!

Fancyahobnob · 13/01/2026 12:55

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

I banned mine from saying mum. I’m now mother

SheSaidSheCouldButSheLied · 13/01/2026 13:28

My GC started calling their parents Mum and Dad from the age of about 9. I know someone whose 12 year od son calls her Mummy, and that seems very babyish

shouldofgotamortage · 13/01/2026 12:46

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

Mine call me Karen. Think I’d take Mother. 😂

Blueuggboots · 13/01/2026 13:29

My son was 7 too. Changed overnight and never went back….😭😭😭

RainySundayAfternoon · 13/01/2026 13:29

Mine all made the change at the same time and although it was weird I quickly got used to it. My youngest DD, now adult, still reverts to mummy quite often though, as it’s acceptable to use it affectionately ( ie when you want something)in your 20’s 🤣

C0rner · 13/01/2026 13:30

Lisavanderpumpsdog · 13/01/2026 13:18

3 and I was not happy.

I blame Bluey.

Edited

I also blame Bluey. My 4y and 2y call me mum and sometimes mate. I tend to only answer to mummy in retaliation. 4y has also started saying kiddo 🙄

Seeing70 · 13/01/2026 13:30

shouldofgotamortage · 13/01/2026 12:46

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

Mine was calling me seeing70 by 13. All three resort to that sometimes because mummy/mum/mother often doesn’t get through anymore 🤣

gamerchick · 13/01/2026 13:31

Always been called mam and still called mam. Never mummy.

My middle kid went through a phase as a teen of calling me mammy over and over to get on my wick like.

My brother calls mother by her first name.

SapphireSeptember · 13/01/2026 13:31

Don't know what DS (18 months old) is going to call me yet, he makes a noise that sounds like 'mum' but isn't really talking yet. Meanwhile I called my DM 'mummy' until I was 12, got told off for it and switched to 'mum' and now call her 'mummy' again in my 30s!

Dolphinnoises · 13/01/2026 13:33

Oh I hated it when this popped up. But as teens now I still get the odd “mummy”, especially when they need a hug

Dontcallmescarface · 13/01/2026 13:33

Mine yelled "mummy" and ran to give me a cuddle a few months ago at a wedding.....she was 33 and the bride.

There will be times when you will still get called " mummy" but you need to accept that those times will be few and far between now which is not a bad thing as those times are usually when you least expect it IME

BunnyLake · 13/01/2026 13:33

Uptightmumma · 13/01/2026 13:27

Be thankful you haven’t got boys I get call bro

So it’s not just mine then. 😁

Gahr · 13/01/2026 13:33

Moveoverdarlin · 13/01/2026 13:28

Mine call me Karen. Think I’d take Mother. 😂

Ugh! Unless that's your actual name...... I love the name Karen and hate how it has been used as a misogynistic, ageist slur.

NotAnotherChickenNugget · 13/01/2026 13:33

My DS is 9 and still calls me mummy… or mumma, mumbum, piggy, or bro! My DD (6) has already changed from daddy to dad (or his name!) and I’m sure I’ll be mum soon too for her.

Gahr · 13/01/2026 13:33

'Bro' is hilarious.

BruisedNeckMeat · 13/01/2026 13:33

We have evolved into madre and padre. Often shortened to marge and parge.

cocog · 13/01/2026 13:35

I get mother now from oldest which is more respectable than Bruv or fam he used as a teenager🙈
youngest 7 calls me a mixture of mummy and mum which is ok.

Thesheerrelief · 13/01/2026 13:35

DS 7 (nearly 8) has started calling me Mum in the past couple of weeks
