And not mummy anymore 😔
Didn’t think it would happen this young (7)
Want to be mummy a bit longer!

What age was your child when you started being called mum and how did it happen?

Give it a couple of years and you’ll be ‘bro’

My 10 year old does this. Bro or Bruh or Bruv

Redcloaktraitor · 13/01/2026 13:18

I think it was about age 7 or 8 that I became ‘mum’ in conversation with others. They still call me mummy or mama when they want something. Bruh quite often. Mother when I’m embarrassing them. ‘Yo Fam!’ if dh and I are in the same room and they walk in.

DS calls DD bruh. DD hates it and so he carries on.

The more you resist, the more they like to torture you. Teens are something else!

HappilyDivorced89 · 13/01/2026 13:19

My DD is 4 and says "mum" sometimes...mostly when she's cranky or trying to get my attention and I'm in another room - "MUUUUUUUUUUMMMMM!!!" The rest of the time it's mummy.

Are you expecting her to keep calling you "mummy" forever?

CandidRaven · 13/01/2026 13:19

My almost 17 year old still calls me mummy 😂

Canopop · 13/01/2026 13:19

My 3 year old calls me by my name hahah

Gahr · 13/01/2026 13:20

This is the second post I've seen about this issue in a shortish time. Do people really care that much about 'Mum' vs 'Mummy'? That said, most people I know seem to say 'Mummy' into adulthood. I don't have children, but if I had I wouldn't want to be called either name. I would want my children to call me by my first name, as I did my own parents.

hysteroww · 13/01/2026 13:20

Don’t think my youngest two ever called me mummy! They copied their elder siblings so I was just mum straight away

PoliteSquid · 13/01/2026 13:21

shouldofgotamortage · 13/01/2026 12:46

Imagine how I feel, my 14 year old calls me mother.

Mine too! They think it’s funny

Vinvertebrate · 13/01/2026 13:21

DS9 calls me “Ma” these days.

It makes me feel like Dot Cotton.

InveterateWineDrinker · 13/01/2026 13:21

My two (8 and 5) have been muttering about it for a while, but announced yesterday that we were to be Mum and Dad from now on.

They've called me much worse!

eatingprayingloving · 13/01/2026 13:21

I say mummy and so does my brother (both 40’s), he also calls her Ma. When we speak about her we refer to her as mummy. I’m not from the UK and all my friends and family call their mums mummy or ma or daddy. Pretty normal in our country though and it was never a ‘thing’ to transition to mum/dad.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/01/2026 13:22

I can't remember. DS calls me mum, mummy when he wants something or has buggered something up. DD usually mum, sometimes mumma. They are 31 and 27. I'm just thrilled they want to be in touch a lpt and still say "love you".

I'm 65 and call my 89 year old mother mummy. Mum was forbidden. Once when she caught me on the hoof on the phone, I said "love you" because I was thinking about the children. She remarked I hadn't said it since childhood.

It's about the relationship @Fancyahobnob, not the label.

JudyMoncada · 13/01/2026 13:22

Mine bypassed it and went from calling me mummy to Judy. I couldn't see the point in fighting it.

Is it wrong to say I don’t like mum as much and can she keep saying mummy

Yes of course it's wrong.
'Mummy' is icky unless your are Royal

Or Irish. Although that’s more Mammy.

🤣 my eldest kids who are now in their 20s do. Makes me feel ancient

SleepingStandingUp · 13/01/2026 13:24

Mine is 10, not sure when it stopped but he's not above a "mommy" when he wants something. i think they kinda grow out of it and then back into it. younger ones mix Mom and Mommy more cos they hear older one say Mom

user2848502016 · 13/01/2026 13:24

I always cringe a bit when an adult calls their parents “mummy and daddy” though

My 11 & 14 year olds call me Mam or occasionally “mate”

ShodAndShadySenators · 13/01/2026 13:24

Mine went from mummy to mum quite soon, but his speech started off with language processing disorder so I didn't have mummy very long at all. C'est la vie, it's the way it goes. MIL used to refer to me as mummy to DS long after he'd changed to mum, it sounded rather strange like she was trying to tell him he should be saying mummy still

PurpleLovecats · 13/01/2026 13:24

Ours are in their twenties now and almost always use our first names!

Clefable · 13/01/2026 13:25

DD1 is almost 7 and occasionally she has said ‘mum’ although she’s mostly still ‘mummy’. Same for dad/daddy. And also ‘bruh’ 😂 which I’m not sure where she’s got that from but I find it hilarious.

BertieWoostersChaps · 13/01/2026 13:25

Mine are teens. I'm just "bro"

Superscientist · 13/01/2026 13:25

I was surprised at how many kids called their parents mum and dad when my daughter started reception so they were 4 or under. Pleased we are currently still mummy and daddy (for now!)

Please let your DD lead on this. I grew up having to consider my mother’s feelings at every turn and it is a big burden. Please don’t start down that path.

SatsumaDog · 13/01/2026 13:25

Mine are 17 and 15 and still call me mummy. I always called my mother, mum. I never remember using mummy. No idea why.
