Irritated by my sister in law since she started Wegovy?

Since going on it she has become utterly smug!!

Every meal is a lecture about portions, willpower and how easy it is if you just decide to be disciplined. She brings it up constantly and watches everyone else eat with a tiny smile. She posts mirror selfies and captions about finally respecting her body. If anyone mentions side effects or cost she waves it away and says excuses are a mindset.

The thing is I am genuinely pleased she feels healthier. I really am. I just cannot cope with the sanctimony. Family dinners are exhausting and I dread comments about my plate. When I gently asked her to stop she said I should be inspired not threatened. I'm not overweight and have never struggled with my weight.

AIBU to think this is insufferable and want some boundaries or should I just swallow it and nod along? I really want to tell her this can't continue and she needs to calm down and stop with the horrid attitude.

I think I'll have to. She was absolutely insufferable during Sunday lunch - I felt the eyes on me as I reached for a second serving of roasted potatoes!!

Would be a pretty miserable life if you couldn't enjoy roast potatoes occasionally

I have a relative a tiny bit like this (no WLI involved), I very firmly told them "enough with the food shaming" a couple of times. Luckily that was enough but I wouldn't hesitate to be much blunter and direct in your case.

"I'm very pleased wegovy has been so transformative for you, genuinely, but you need to make that the absolute last time you police my eating or make any comment on my food choices."

And if she pushes back, "it's totally unacceptable and if you don't stop then we are going to fall out. I am respectful of your autonomy, the least you can do is be respectful of mine. What I eat and how I eat, and why, is none of your business"

If there are children around then I would also point out I do not want them hearing such comments or conversation because you don't want them growing up in the toxic diet culture we all grew up in.

NotThisAgain1987 · 11/01/2026 18:47

Doesn't matter if she did have a weight problem leave other people's plates alone. It's rude and creates far more issues when meal times feel like your body is going to be torn apart.

OP I suggest you get a book called Say The Thing it's about inserting boundaries. Or go down the petty route and say wegovy makes you look like your skin is slipping off your bones and ages you terribly and ask if she's worried about the amount of people who shit themselves on it? That will probably shut down the convo sharpish

What did I just read? Nonone looks like that or shits themselves on it. What an odd thing to write.

EatYourDamnPie · 11/01/2026 18:53

Just tell her to mind her own (empty) plate.

Nevereatcardboard · 11/01/2026 18:54

Is there any chance to avoid eating with her for a while? I want to enjoy my food, not be made to feel bad about it. If you want to see the family you can get there after lunch to spend time with them.

scorpiogirly · 11/01/2026 18:56

Well she isn't disciplined is she? Which is why she's on the jab in the first place. What a muppet.

theyregonnaknow · 11/01/2026 18:58

Why don’t you tell her sweetly that the latest research shows that those who come off the jabs will have gained all of the weight back within 18months? Roastie, anyone? 🤣

BoredZelda · 11/01/2026 18:58

TheMorgenmuffel · 11/01/2026 18:19

Tell her to shut up about willpower since she needed fat jabs to find some.

I'm on mounjaro and no willpower is required when you just dont feel like eating!

I was the same on Mounjaro. Wegovy is a completely different kettle of fish for me. I need way more willpower to stay off the sweet stuff than I did with Mounjaro.

BoredZelda · 11/01/2026 19:00

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/01/2026 18:37

That is a horrible thing to even suggest. I would bet money OP is thinking exactly on these lines. I think I’m one of the few slim people who isn’t jealous and rude about users of weight loss injections.
I think this thread is BS anyway.
Another made up WLI thread.
^OP shouldn’t be monitored she’s already disciplined blah blah blah^

👍

Yes, it's a bit mind boggling. She talks about how some people on these medications can't control themselves and eat a whole box of biscuits or a family size Dairy Milk and are then nauseous. Which is true but also I thought the whole reason these drugs work is because you genuinely don't have an appetite. The people binging are not the norm.

I have a friend who has been on WLIs for a year now, he's lost 7 stone...but he's still eating all the crap he was beforehand, and in the same enormous portions.

He'll ring me up and say that he's just eaten 2 boxes of Magnums and 24 Yorkie bars (and he's a type 2 diabetic) in less than 24 hours, and wonders why he's got a very upset stomach and feels nauseous...and he's on the highest dose of WLI that you can take!

I've been on WLIs for 4 months and have lost 3 stone. I honestly don't understand how he's managing to eat like he does, I've lost complete interest in sugar, fat etc since starting. The one time I did overdo it I was violently ill!

BillieWiper · 11/01/2026 19:02

Tell her she's 'starting to sound like a walking advertisment for Wegovy and frankly it's boring the tits off everyone. If we wanted to take it we already would have.

Just eat as little as your medicine inclines you to and be quiet about what others are eating. If you don't I'm afraid we won't want to share meals with you anymore.'

Sleepasaurus · 11/01/2026 19:02

Bite your tongue for now. She’s got a new obsession and is seeing results. She probably feels like she’s won the lottery.
As she gets used to hopefully she will become less of a twat.

Eat what you want to eat. Don’t feel pressured or judged by anyone.

Merryoldgoat · 11/01/2026 19:02

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/01/2026 18:45

OP would judge you for your lack of self control needing WLI to begin with.
I see through her false annoyance and concern.

But I don’t care if someone judges me. I literally don’t give a fuck. I tell people I’m on the jabs if they ask and I don’t care what they think.

I also have zero issue in telling people I’m uninterested in their opinions if they offer one.

OP’s motivations are irrelevant. Her SIL is being a prick and it’s reasonable to want her to stop.

Delphiniumandlupins · 11/01/2026 19:03

When she starts can you say something supportive about how well she's doing but then say how boring it is to focus so much on food? So praise and then redirect. It's not healthy to be obsessed with what other people are eating.

YourRealTurtle · 11/01/2026 19:04

scorpiogirly · 11/01/2026 18:56

Well she isn't disciplined is she? Which is why she's on the jab in the first place. What a muppet.

She is disciplined (according to her) because her diet is really clean now. She has this idea in her head that some people on these drugs struggle with that. I don't see the point in talking to her about the science, to be honest.

Wsiw71 · 11/01/2026 19:05

Within 3 months she will be back to her previous heavy weight and you will still be the same slim beautiful person you always were.

I am not even going to go there because she hasn't really talked about her plan once she hits her goal weight. I don't think she's really thinking about that!!

OP posts:
Terriactic · 11/01/2026 19:07

Hmm, I've lost a lot of weight on mounjaro, very noticeably so and all anyone else wants to talk about is my weight.
I'm surprised she wants to keep on about it, it's the last thing I want to talk about, but everyone else is determined to keep banging on about it. Just shut her down, every single time, and she'll hopefully get fed up.
Like a PP though I'd be tempted to stuff myself in front of her out of sheer spite😂

What did I just read? Nonone looks like that or shits themselves on it. What an odd thing to write.

I don't know where you've been but many people who take it absolutely do take it and here's the list of side effects with many people talking about being caught short, I'm sure you'll be fine though.

Common Side Effects
Most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature and tend to be mild to moderate, often subsiding as your body adjusts to the medication.

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Stomach (abdomen) pain
  • Headache
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Upset stomach or indigestion
  • Dizziness
  • Bloating, belching, or gas
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Injection site reactions (redness, itching, soreness)
  • Hair loss (usually temporary)
  • Runny nose or sore throat

Serious Side Effects
While rare, Wegovy can cause serious side effects that require immediate medical attention.

DierdreDaphne · 11/01/2026 19:12

GrumpyInsomniac · 11/01/2026 18:14

I’d be tempted to say that you’re glad the Wegovy has finally given her the chance to experience food the way you do naturally, and that it takes real courage to admit that you need help to control your appetite. You can’t imagine how hard it’s been for her until now, but good on her for getting help. And then smile sweetly.

And I say this as a card-carrying lard arse who would love to be able to afford the injections and wishes that she had an easy way to get her weight down to something sensible.

Yep, I was thinking similar "Im so happy for you SiL that you have finally found your willpower. We all think it's marvellous 😊😊"

Daleksatemyshed · 11/01/2026 19:13

Just point out to her that not everyone whose slim has lived a life of denial. Staying at a healthy weight is about moderation, very few people get to eat endless amounts of fattening food and stay slim.

LoudSnoringDog · 11/01/2026 19:13

If it’s as easy as she says it is then she shouldn’t need Wegovy

Bikergran · 11/01/2026 19:14

Refuse to eat with her. Tell her her attitude is absolutely vile and she must be alienating everyone she comes into contact with. If it makes you feel any better, a recent report says when people come off WLI, the weight goes back on.
I really sympathise, my BIL has been like this all year and is totally insufferable, he constantly comments on everybody's food.

Bikergran · 11/01/2026 19:15

YourRealTurtle · 11/01/2026 18:07

I think I'll have to. She was absolutely insufferable during Sunday lunch - I felt the eyes on me as I reached for a second serving of roasted potatoes!!

It would make me have a third helping and smack my lips while eating them, nom, nom, nom........😋

Terriactic · 11/01/2026 19:19

@NotThisAgain1987 ive had some, if not all of those side effects in a year to a greater or lesser extent, but the best side effect has been the loss of over 5 stone without really thinking about it, off it now and keeping it off, oh and I've never actually shit myself, nor has anyone else I know whose on them.
