Irritated by my sister in law since she started Wegovy?

Since going on it she has become utterly smug!!

Every meal is a lecture about portions, willpower and how easy it is if you just decide to be disciplined. She brings it up constantly and watches everyone else eat with a tiny smile. She posts mirror selfies and captions about finally respecting her body. If anyone mentions side effects or cost she waves it away and says excuses are a mindset.

The thing is I am genuinely pleased she feels healthier. I really am. I just cannot cope with the sanctimony. Family dinners are exhausting and I dread comments about my plate. When I gently asked her to stop she said I should be inspired not threatened. I'm not overweight and have never struggled with my weight.

AIBU to think this is insufferable and want some boundaries or should I just swallow it and nod along? I really want to tell her this can't continue and she needs to calm down and stop with the horrid attitude.

Is triggered the latest insult to shut people up? Pointing out you are citing information that's bloody obvious and is something most people have considered from the start of taking injections as they've already failed at numerous diets is hardly triggered. More bored of people asking about it as if it's a revelation.

And yes, 'fat shaming' people you disapprove of is mean.

Edited

Touched a nerve, I see. Oh well. What's "bloody obvious" to you might not be for everyone else. Come down off your high horse sometime!

ANGIEPANGY77 · 11/01/2026 20:37

This right here. Please, pretty please, say this to her verbatim.

ResusciAnnie · 11/01/2026 20:40

how easy it is if you just decide to be disciplined

?? but she hasnt just decided to be disciplined if she’s on wegovy. I’m on WLI because you cant just decide, it doesn’t work like that.

ANGIEPANGY77 · 11/01/2026 20:40

GrumpyInsomniac · 11/01/2026 18:14

I’d be tempted to say that you’re glad the Wegovy has finally given her the chance to experience food the way you do naturally, and that it takes real courage to admit that you need help to control your appetite. You can’t imagine how hard it’s been for her until now, but good on her for getting help. And then smile sweetly.

And I say this as a card-carrying lard arse who would love to be able to afford the injections and wishes that she had an easy way to get her weight down to something sensible.

Please, pretty please, say this to her.

No. I eat whether im hungry or not. I like it too much.

You eat when you are not hungry? I can understand chocolate etc but food like a dinner or sandwiches or toast when you are not hungry? I believe you I just can’t imagine doing it, I wouldn’t get the point of it.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 11/01/2026 21:02

Tell her to shut the fuck or you will not be inviting her over anymore.

Zov · 11/01/2026 21:03

Don't worry about it @YourRealTurtle as soon as she stops taking it, the weight will pile back on.

Zov · 11/01/2026 21:07

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/01/2026 19:07

Mean.

Partly true though. I say partly, as it will be more likely 8-9 months before she regains the weight. Not 18 months.

Let her. Let people have their moment. You can be busy for awhile and not have to listen to it.

Fi9610 · 11/01/2026 21:11

Lots of great suggestions for replies already OP. Nothing to add other than my own experience: I’m carrying a bit of extra weight atm and my cousin (also on the jabs) said “You must be consuming a lot of calories to sustain that.” Without a hint of irony! 😂

TheBlueKoala · 11/01/2026 21:12

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 11/01/2026 20:15

"Yeah, willpower is amazing! That's what the rest of us have been using all these years to maintain a healthy weight, while you were eating like a half-starved Labrador. I'm so glad that there is now this miracle drug for people who don't have the discipline to eat healthily"

Smile sweetly.

This! But only because she's smug and insufferable. I wouldn't say that to a wli user who is not sanctimonious.

paddleboardingmum · 11/01/2026 21:15

Who has loads of dinners with their sil though? just meet them for coffee instead or a walk or something.

Fi9610 · 11/01/2026 21:17

You could say you’d love to go on the jabs for her willpower but you don’t qualify.

Amonthinthecountry · 11/01/2026 21:20

YourRealTurtle · 11/01/2026 18:38

That's interesting. It's only been three months for her so early days. Honestly I think she is just on a high because the weight is falling off with little effort from her. Not sure how she'll adapt when she goes off the drugs and the appetite comes back. I've heard that can be a really intense adjustment.

Yeah, that’ll be the real test. I lost a couple of stone on Mounjaro and after it had worn off I would have quite happily eaten my entire family I was so hungry.

Pickledpoppetpickle · 11/01/2026 21:22

Wsiw71 · 11/01/2026 19:05

Within 3 months she will be back to her previous heavy weight and you will still be the same slim beautiful person you always were.

I really resent shit like this. I am losing weight for my health. I was beautiful - inside and out - when over weight.. So unnecessarily insulting. No wonder people are grabbing the chance to be thinner when people think it's OK to openly insult anyone who doesn't meet some societal imposed beauty standard.

Squirrelchops1 · 11/01/2026 21:24

JacknDiane · 11/01/2026 20:21

I can't imagine not having food to cheer me up, or look forward too.

I guess it's just a different mindset to get used to.

It is a different mindset however as someone who is an emotional eater...any emotion...it's been nice to shut that off.
I do still look forward to some food but it's sated pretty quickly once I start eating said food now.

True though.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/01/2026 21:32

AutumnLover1989 · 11/01/2026 21:27

True though.

Not necessarily, if SIL can afford maintenance jabs she’ll be fine.
Stuffing your face is an addictive habit, changing the way you eat daily will eventually reset the mood, if not, maintenance jabs are an option.

AutumnLover1989 · 11/01/2026 21:37

I personally think people on wli don't deserve to be sanctimonious. I'd have far more respect for someone who's lost weight by putting hard work in and not just taken a jab 🙄

Thecows · 11/01/2026 21:37

Merryoldgoat · 11/01/2026 18:32

You could go ‘full cunt’ and say ‘mate - I’m not the one using medication to eat normally - I don’t think you’re in a position to judge anyone’s eating’ and finish your pudding with relish.

Brilliant! 🤣

WhateverMate · 11/01/2026 21:39

SBGM247 · 11/01/2026 21:09

Let her. Let people have their moment. You can be busy for awhile and not have to listen to it.

Bollocks to that.

Lecturing people about their eating habits and the food on their plates, is not 'having her moment'.

It's being a sanctimonious dick.

Tuesdayschild50 · 11/01/2026 21:48

She isn't losing weight through healthy eating smaller portions or more exercise .
She is taking medication which completely stops her wanting to eat.
It's the medication not her willpower or change in eating habits.when she has to stop the injections she will want to eat how she used to.
Tell her the above and no longer share mealtimes with her I can't be doing with the attitude of these people .
They need to REMEMBER they haven't lost weight through normal everyday healthy changes its medication that stops food cravings.
Plus lots look awful as the fat drains from there faces they look haggard.

Miniaturemom · 11/01/2026 22:01

Inspired not threatened omg I’d be raging 🤦‍♀️

I take WLI AND put in a huge amount of effort! Ive over hauled my diet and lift heavy in the gym anything from 4 to 6 days a week!
