Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

It takes 2 minutes to get dressed?

Yes but you're comfort is completely lost, and the whole cosy feel of Sunday has changed to day wear mode.

Just put on some leggings and a hoodie - still loungewear but socially acceptable to be seen out in.

BashfulClam · 11/01/2026 11:33

No, it’s not acceptable, put on some jeans ffs. It’s not just two hours as Scotland doesn’t have Sunday laws so people will wander in at 7 am in pyjamas?

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:34

Note: I'm now fully dressed (90 seconds), and am off to get breakfast.

I would swap my pyjama bottoms for jogging bottoms then put on a coat to cover my top half or at least wear a long coat. I have seen teenagers in the supermarket wearing those fleece pyjama bottoms and thought it was very lazy.

pimplebum · 11/01/2026 11:36

I regularly do it but mostly late evening time
but always with big coat on and proper shoes And my pjs are pjs / leisure wear

I kind of admire the young ones who say “fuck it “ and wear manky dressing gown and fluffy slippers - bonus points for huge rollers that’s the dream ! 👍

AllIdoistidyup · 11/01/2026 11:36

I just pull on some joggers over my pj bottoms and put a coat on. Supermarket is a 3 minute walk. Nobody is any the wiser!

I love Scotland's trading laws, no ridiculous "fuck it's 1 minute past 4" feeling.

But I would argue 7am Sunday is absolutely the time to have socially acceptable jimjams!

I don't get it...

a) who wants people who haven't got washed and dressed in close proximity to them in public

and

b) who wants outdoor public germs on their indoor nightwear?

Begone to thy wardrobe ye slattern! 😆

Sorry but this is ridiculous. If your clothes are that uncomfortable you need new clothes.

I have never understood why people think jeans, shirts etc are uncomfortable. If they are then you're wearing the wrong bloody size.

WhatNoRaisins · 11/01/2026 11:37

I think realistically a cosy day needs planning and preparation so you don't have to get dressed or go out. It's worth it though.

Tink3rbell30 · 11/01/2026 11:37

No. It's just advertising to everyone you haven't changed your knickers or washed.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/01/2026 11:37

Get dressed. Nobody will ever know that you haven't showered unless you had night sweats wearing said pj's.
I also think sports clothing should be banned from supermarkets. There's a large Sunday morning contingent who come into our local Tesco wearing muddy rugby kit or dirty jodhpurs and riding boots.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 11/01/2026 11:38

Just change in to joggers and hoody.

growinguptobreakingdown · 11/01/2026 11:38

It looks grubby. You haven't showered.I'd assume you hadn't brushed your teeth and either had yesterday's knickers on, or none.

The answer to that is to keep the pjs on under your clothes. So when you what home you can be back to comfort in a superman style second.

whymadam · 11/01/2026 11:39

I went to the supermarket early this Sunday morning and, trust me, there were way worse than pajamas in there!

oocooloo · 11/01/2026 11:40

I've no problem with others doing it, in fact I wouldn't notice or care TBH, it's not the worst thing a person could do!

But I'm in the contingent that would not leave the house in PJs even to put the flippin bin out lol!

In an emergency where I needed something immediately, I'd throw on some jogging pants over the pjs and feet into a pair of slip ons, jacket on. Not judging anyone, that's just me.

No, my day clothes aren't uncomfortable.

But if your nightwear isn't of the uber extra cosy comfy sort, you are missing out in life!

This

It takes seconds to pull on some leggings / joggers and still very comfortable

Okayfenokay · 11/01/2026 11:40

It's never acceptable. Have some dignity.

namestevalian · 11/01/2026 11:42

Well hopefully it's not put you off your fry up, enjoy.

I want bacon and eggs now.
