Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

Standards!! I shower and wash my hair every day. Wouldn’t dream of leaving the house unwashed. You can smell those in Tesco that do

EuclidianGeometryFan · 11/01/2026 11:57

You need knee-high boots and a long coat that comes down past your knees.
Then no-one can see what you have on underneath.

Trackies!!!

No way will that lifestyle choice be one that I make!

So you’re prepared to go out in the fusty PJs you’ve just slept in but trackies are beneath you? Riiiight.

Im currently wearing a lovely set of super soft loungewear from Hush. Every bit as cosy as my pyjamas and they are clean and fresh. Sorry if they’re not a top fashion choice, but at least if I pop out I’ll look like someone who bothered to wash and dress.

onlymethen · 11/01/2026 11:57

Absolutely not, I’ve stopped shopping at Asda as every visit I see someone in their bedclothes, it’s absolutely disgusting and looks ridiculous.

Bunnycat101 · 11/01/2026 11:58

ugg- no it should be acceptable. I love a good pyjama day but really it’s not that much effort to chuck on some clothes as you did. It should be frowned upon to go to a supermarket in pyjamas unless you are a) a baby or b) seriously unwell.

ThejoyofNC · 11/01/2026 11:59

I've been to the shop in my pyjamas plenty of times.

If people can walk around half naked, stinking, on drugs, dressed as a fucking furry or basically any manner of things then I can wear my fully covered pyjamas with absolutely no shame.

Wintersgirl · 11/01/2026 11:59

No It's bone idle....

GameofPhones · 11/01/2026 12:01

I was in supermarket once, in the afternoon, when a heavily made-up woman came in wearing baby-doll nightwear (shorts bottoms) and was buying cakes. She looked as if she'd just popped out from a brothel. I was intrigued and amused.

grrrlatrix · 11/01/2026 12:02

I’m actually downstairs in pyjamas today. It doesn’t feel good. I always get changed into leggings and a cosy top before I come downstairs if I’m having a lazy day.

Catwalking · 11/01/2026 12:02

Just go to bed fully clothed? 😆

Dollyfloss · 11/01/2026 12:04

Pyjamas should never be worn outdoors - joggers are acceptable (I wouldn’t wear joggers myself but at least they’re not nightwear).

But personally I wouldn’t see you to be offended as I’m still in bed - so I can’t really talk can I?

cha04 · 11/01/2026 12:04

No it’s smelly and dirty. You’ve no doubt been sweating rolling around in unwashed sheets not had a shower. It’s gross. Most people are rank tbh!

I went to the supermarket early this Sunday morning and, trust me, there were way worse than pajamas in there!

MN really needs to add a laughing emoji to their response ones 😅

JoyeuxNarwhal · 11/01/2026 12:05

Waterproof trousers and a fully zipped up coat. No one but you woul know.

ElegantFowl · 11/01/2026 12:05

It’s utterly skanky.

Lorrymum · 11/01/2026 12:05

No!
I now have visions of people strolling around Sainsbury's/Tesco/Waitrose in nightshirts and nightcaps with a candle holder in hand. I think I saw too many versions of A Christmas Carol over the past few weeks.

Allmarbleslost · 11/01/2026 12:06

I should say no but my teenager has just travelled home on the bus from a sleepover, wearing her pyjamas. I haven't got a leg to stand on.

BunnyLake · 11/01/2026 12:07

No. As tempting as it is I would just get dressed. I sometimes put a coat over my pj’s to take the bins out for collection and feel slobby enough doing that.

TheKateColumbo · 11/01/2026 12:09

This is what delivery services are for surely. Any cosiness from home is surely spoiled by the act of leaving the house.

BookAndPiano · 11/01/2026 12:09

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:34

Note: I'm now fully dressed (90 seconds), and am off to get breakfast.

Are you washed?

I'm sure that those who go out in pyjamas are unwashed and smelly.

I haven't conducted a survey or have any statistics- biased or otherwise- to support my belief because
a) common sense tells me they are
and
b) I don't want to stand downwind of them to ask them

Was she wearing those high heeled slippers with a pom pom on as well?

Gingernaut · 11/01/2026 12:09

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:33

Yes but you're comfort is completely lost, and the whole cosy feel of Sunday has changed to day wear mode.

So, stay at home and go out shopping on a day where you will get dressed

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/01/2026 12:09

Organise your life better so you have food in stock. Or accept you don't and eat something else. Or just change your clothes. Surely if anything is going to interfere with the snuggly winter morning feeling it's the trip to the shop itself.

DeposedPresident · 11/01/2026 12:10

There is a bit of me that feels nostalgia for Days of Yore where people dressed quite formally all the time, even at home. But i think in practice I would not like it.

But having respectable loungewear that can seamlessly transition ** from home to otuside is a good call.

**Yes i am being deliberately pretentious as a joke, but actually I do think nice loungewear is important. I don't have any, so might do some internet shopping. Smile

PragmaticIsh · 11/01/2026 12:11

I don't understand how anyone could go to the supermarket without showering first, you'd feel utterly disgusting!

Not even pyjamas, but I can’t imagine wearing jogging trousers or leggings to a supermarket, very slovenly, they're for the gym in my mind. So pyjamas are another level!
