Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

OP, you may be sylph-like but the thought of a 35 stone, sweaty, hairy man, scratching his bits through his flannels, and then browsing the tangerines is frankly revolting.

So no thanks. Definitely no.

CyberWithRosie · 11/01/2026 18:52

Ew, no! Have a wash and get dressed before you venture into a food shop please! Or any other public building for that matter.

Is it only fat people you don't want doing this? Or are you implying that thin people have better manners?

Only that people with a higher percentage body fat sweat more, and people who have more body hair tend to scratch more and shed more hair.
Neither of which are conducive to good hygiene around food.

No, this is just not acceptable.
The country's standards are already on a slippery downward slop as it is, it takes 5 minutes to dress.

At the risk of sounding like my mother (long gone, born 1918) too many people have zero self respect.

I must admit, I've frequently gone shopping post run in some questionable attire including bright pink compression socks and crocs. I'm generally quite happy with people wearing what they fancy BUT I don't like seeing healthcare workers wondering around in their uniforms particularly.

Oh dear. I work in health and social care and often pop into supermarkets in between slots. I wear black trousers and a matching top with my company’s tunic on top, with leather shoes and £7000 worth of diamonds that I’m never without in daytime. I hope I don’t offend…

Lovely. I'll just change Mr Whatsit's catheter and re-pack Mrs Thingamajigs gammy leg wounds then take a trip round Tesco and have a good rummage around the fruit and veg whilst rubbing my uniform on everything.
What on earth do the diamonds have to do with anything?! I'm curious 🧐

I don’t get this it’s not hard to put on some clothes I think only time it’s acceptable to have pj on outside is an early morning quick dog walk

Fridgemanageress · 11/01/2026 20:10

In this weather the big long puffer coat is a must, and the black boots, just remember to brush your teeth and hair.

FourChimneys · 11/01/2026 20:15

I wear a nightie not pyjamas. No way does the general public want me wandering round Tesco in a flimsy nightie.

omggggggg · 11/01/2026 20:16

I think I could get away with it but my pjs are more like jogging bottoms and I just wear a t shirt over them. With a coat over you wouldn’t notice. I don’t think I could do it though. I’ve gone to the post box in the dark with them but that’s as brave as I’ve been. Proper pjs would look scruffy.

TumbledTussocks · 11/01/2026 21:07

The solution is clearly to sleep in leisure wear/ comfy clothes. 😆

Yes but you're comfort is completely lost, and the whole cosy feel of Sunday has changed to day wear mode.

Going out the shops means your comfort is already lost. Ive often just pulled jeans and a hoodie on and quickly nipped out.
Going in your pj's at ANY time is 'an abomination ', doesn't make uou hetter than those simply cos you've gone on a Sunday!
