Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:31

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 12:23

Okay, so my supermarket survey is as follows:

Jimjams: 0
Trackies: 2
Leisurewear: 2
Properly clothed: Everyone else

Hopefully you don’t get back into bed wearing the same pyjamas that you’ve walked the streets wearing.

Supermarkets aren’t clean either.

Superhansrantowindsor · 11/01/2026 12:24

People are a bit worrying with regards personal hygiene.
Get up, have at least a wash- better still a shower and put some clothes on.
why would anyone want to wear pyjamas all day? Surely that’s like being ill?

HangryBrickShark · 11/01/2026 12:24

Ew its gross. Since 1987 I've never set foot out of the door without foundation and eyeliner and I'd not dream of going anywhere without showering my lower half and getting changed out of nightwear.

I despair of what this country is becoming and the lack of standards and self respect that some folks have. Sorry not trying to be mean.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 11/01/2026 12:24

I used to just put a baggy pair of joggers and my winter coat on over my pyjamas when I needed to unexpectedly go out to shops on a weekend morning, nobody can tell and then once I was home I’d just remove and be cozy in my PJs again. I had a pair of joggers I kept by the front door for this exact reason!

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 11/01/2026 12:24

Theres a lassie who drops of her dc at school in her jammies. I think it looks slovenly.

CatFaceCatFace · 11/01/2026 12:25

I've gone for leggings and an oversized fleece. Cozy Sunday feeling has been maintained but I still feel like I can leave the house. Not that I plan to.

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 12:25

I'm ready to feast!

Don’t judge on the streaky, a treat should be a treat, not a sensible back bacon half treat.

I agree the pyjamas wearing is totally gross outside of the house.

But you not leaving the house without putting makeup on your face for 38 years, is down to your own personal insecurity about your natural looks.

A completely different subject.

I’ve never worn foundation. I haven’t worn any make up of any kind for over a decade. Not sure what that’s got to do with my self respect and standards though.
Edit: just processed ‘showering my bottom half’. What? How? Why? Just have a proper shower!

sprigatito · 11/01/2026 12:28

You’re never going to get this idea past MN, where being “put together” is the pinnacle of social achievement 😂

I find it really fascinating that such high feeling is attached to really quite marginal differences in clothing. A pair of clean pyjamas doesn’t breach any concrete social rules in terms of decency; it’s basically a shirt and trousers, but it arouses disgust and contempt because it’s identifiable as “nightwear”. It’s a really weird quirk of human behaviour to me.

Crumbs! I probably haven't worn eyeliner and foundation since 1987!

Me too. I haven’t worn make up for about ten years now.

Ypu are wrong. Streaky bacon is rubbish. Back bacon is the proper treat.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 11/01/2026 12:29

I think wearing foundation every day for 38 years is probably a vicious circle.

The makeup eventually fucks your skin, so you don't want to leave the house without covering it up.

I’ve just had a browse on Google and there are some PJs for £1,600. I think I’d be going to work in those 😁

How does make up ‘fuck’ your skin? It really doesn’t

I see you went to Asda, so can understand why you thought it might be acceptable to wear pyjamas. I understand that this is the supermarket of choice for PJ wearers! 😁

It looks nice though and I hope you enjoy your breakfast!

I became a fan of streaky over back bacon about twenty year’s ago after several visits to the US. I’ve been a convert ever since and only buy streaky now.

TeeBee · 11/01/2026 12:33

No. Let’s have some basic standards.
