Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:31

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

I don't get it...

a) who wants people who haven't got washed and dressed in close proximity to them in public

and

b) who wants outdoor public germs on their indoor nightwear?

Begone to thy wardrobe ye slattern! 😆

This a million times!

Those super comfy pjs are sacred OP! Don’t spoil them by mingling with the great unwashed!

Sorry but this is ridiculous. If your clothes are that uncomfortable you need new clothes.

I have never understood why people think jeans, shirts etc are uncomfortable. If they are then you're wearing the wrong bloody size.

But changing your clothes means putting taking off warm clothes and replacing them with cold clothes.

I would never ever go to the supermarket in pyjamas but I understand how they are more comfortable than jeans

WhoGrant · 11/01/2026 12:11

Good lord! Have you given up on life?

MargolyesofBeelzebub · 11/01/2026 12:12

On Christmas day, I saw a whole family of four out walking their dog in matching Christmas pyjamas (under their coats). It made me irrationally angry and I don't know why. I know I was being unreasonable haha.

I think people venturing more than 10m from their house in pyjamas must be a social taboo 😂

PersephonePomegranate · 11/01/2026 12:12

Definitely time to upgrade the lounge wear! My go to in winter consists of a sweatshirt or hoodie and fleece lined leggings.

Not acceptable whatsoever!!

I live a street over from a major supermarket & invariably see people ( mostly women btw) walking there with night attire !
Slippers , PJ’s , Fluffy Dressing Gowns !!!!!
In what world is this actually acceptable?

On Friday night a friend messaged me to say she was in a carvery & there were multiple people in the same attire WTF 😬

We live in denial areas her close to NW London in
Hertfordshire me Cambridgeshire

rosydreams · 11/01/2026 12:13

The reason people don't make it socially acceptable is were does that slide end. There needs to be a bare minimum or were does it lead.

I teach my daughter minimum out is hair brushed, clean pants, top bottoms and what ever shoes.

I work drive through i have seen people in just a dressing gown and NOTHING ELSE .why

You can have some comfy leggings or joggers and a baggy t shirt for running out the house with flip flops . If i do the school run its jeggings trainers and a baggy t shirt. You can be lazy but decent

JacknDiane · 11/01/2026 12:14

Manky, wandering in a supermarket in jammies
🤢

VickyEadieofThigh · 11/01/2026 12:15

I never go out in public without showering (which I do every morning) and dressing appropriately.

It's lazy as feck to go out in night clothes.

BunnyLake · 11/01/2026 12:15

PragmaticIsh · 11/01/2026 12:11

I don't understand how anyone could go to the supermarket without showering first, you'd feel utterly disgusting!

Not even pyjamas, but I can’t imagine wearing jogging trousers or leggings to a supermarket, very slovenly, they're for the gym in my mind. So pyjamas are another level!

Leggings are my normal day wear. Leggings and a sweater/top that covers my bum and I’m dressed.

BookAndPiano · 11/01/2026 12:15

It puts me in mind of those who go out in public with their face unwashed, dirty teeth or unbrushed hair-these often accompany public pyjama wearers-and I ask myself if this is how they present the bits that are on show, what must their arses and undercarriages be like!

Toottooot · 11/01/2026 12:16

Dinna be a mink. Get dressed min.

Just go to bed fully clothed? 😆

Oh I know it's pretty standard wear, I just couldn't wear jogging trousers or leggings out unless it was to the gym. I accept I'm odd though!

Okiedokie123 · 11/01/2026 12:17

Just get dressed. Go get your bacon and eggs for your lunch (too late for brekkie!)
Or plan in advance....... buy during the week ready for cosy Sunday breakfast/brunch in your jammies.

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 12:17

JoyeuxNarwhal · 11/01/2026 12:05

Waterproof trousers and a fully zipped up coat. No one but you woul know.

Good plan!

I’ve still not got over seeing a woman in an Oodie in Lidl and that was about two year’s ago. I still think about it sometimes 😁

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 11/01/2026 12:18

WSC quotation of the day:

“Keep a special pair of boots to sleep in & only get them muddy in a real emergency.”

not all that relevant but I came across it yesterday.

BeardofHagrid · 11/01/2026 12:18

I recently saw a lady who was old enough to know better in pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers grabbing a pint of milk in a medium sized supermarket. I have seen others too. Sorry but I think it’s really grim!

You're right, they are sacred. I don't wear Jimjams to bed as it's too hot, but my cosy day jammies should never be sullied by other people's germs!

I wear decent quality leggings though, none of those thin ones that look like you’ve forgotten to put your skirt on over your tights 🫣

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/01/2026 12:21

I wore pyjama bottoms all the time when I had my gallbladder out. They were the only thing that was comfortable and that was all I cared about!

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 12:22

BookAndPiano · 11/01/2026 12:09

Are you washed?

I'm sure that those who go out in pyjamas are unwashed and smelly.

I haven't conducted a survey or have any statistics- biased or otherwise- to support my belief because
a) common sense tells me they are
and
b) I don't want to stand downwind of them to ask them

Edited

Quick bits wash, deodorised and teeth brushed. Clean knickers and socks. Yesterday's clothes that are due to go into the laundry.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 11/01/2026 12:23

I don't own any nightwear, and while I'd be happy enough to go to the shops in the buff (maybe not this time of year), pretty sure noone else wants to see that.

Elbowpatch · 11/01/2026 12:23

It wasn’t that long ago that anybody found wandering around outside in their nightwear would have been caught by men with nets and bundled off to a mental hospital.
