Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:31

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

some elasticated waist trousers in soft fabrics, some soft comfy jumpers and your life will be transformed!

This sounds lovely! 🥰

Yes but you're comfort is completely lost, and the whole cosy feel of Sunday has changed to day wear mode.

Well then you need to be far more organised and have bacon and eggs in the house already. I don't want to see pyjamas out in public at all. Slobby.

*Your comfort, not you're (you are) comfort.

The last person who corrected my appalling grammar faux pas had their comment deleted (not reported by me BTW!)

But you're right I do need to be more organised. The approach to a leisurely Sunday morning just doesn't feel like the right time for that sort of thing though. 😕

No, it’s not the end of the month yet

This is what I'd do. Since lockdown I virtually live in leggings and hoodies as I wfh.

According to a previous poster leggings are slovenly! Leggings and a baggy t shirt or hoody are the only comfortable things for WFH or weekends!

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 14:04

I have (very) occasionally put the bins out wearing jammies.

But only when I've forgotten it's bin day, I've heard the lorry, and there's been no time for the full cleaning and dressing experience to happen.

What's wrong with putting out the bins in PJs?!

sunights · 11/01/2026 16:36

Depends on the PJs, e.g. if they could double as lounge-wear I really don't see it matters or even how anyone would know...

How is sleeping in knickers any more grim than sleeping in anything else? I think it’s grim having your bare muff touching your pyjama crotch! But that aside, so in your world they are out knickerless in pyjamas they’ve worn all night. Thats even grimmer!!

Edited

These arguments always show a level of internalised misogyny that staggers me. Two women arguing about which is more disgusting, knickers in bed or a “bare muff” touching your pyjamas. It’s a normal human body part, and those are your clothes Confused where is all the revulsion coming from?

DuchessofStaffordshire · 11/01/2026 16:39

I must admit, I've frequently gone shopping post run in some questionable attire including bright pink compression socks and crocs. I'm generally quite happy with people wearing what they fancy BUT I don't like seeing healthcare workers wondering around in their uniforms particularly.

Laziness is a slippery slope.

OK then. What are you planning for next week's sermon?

Oh yes, I've just seen that! And I care not one whit. 😄

I was behind a couple in my small local M&S this morning, both in PJs and they stunk

Get some self respect

Couldn't agree more. I've noticed this on 'knickers under PJs?' threads. A lot of women out there seem to be horrified by their own private parts as well as everyone else's. Assuming many will be mums as we're on Mumsnet, I always wonder how they were able to bring themselves to give birth without fainting away in horror.

Ugh. Yeah, that is rank.

jan2310 · 11/01/2026 16:55

I’m relaxed about hygiene compared to many on Mumsnet but I think this is grim. How far are standards supposed to slip, where will it all end? Have some pride.

Eastie77Returns · 11/01/2026 17:02

There was a thread a while ago about people wearing PJ’s to breakfast in hotels. I was horrified at the number of people who thought that was ok🤢 I stayed in a Holiday Inn once where a woman and 3 young children all came down in nightwear. The woman also had a silk hair bonnet on which she presumably wore to bed. She completed the unspeakable grimness of it all by getting out an iPad and face timing someone with the call on loudspeaker.

BunnyLake · 11/01/2026 17:30

Apart from Oodie lady in Lidl I have never seen anyone out and about in PJs and dressing gowns. But it seems a normal and regular (if unappealing) sight to some posters?

I have all three but I'm not getting dressed to nip out to the bins for 2 minutes! Should I be putting on makeup and doing my hair as well?

I hang my underwear on the washing line where many of my neighbours can see it so I'm sure me going out to the bins in pyjamas or my dressing gown is fine!

Get dressed. Nobody will ever know that you haven't showered unless you had night sweats wearing said pj's.
I also think sports clothing should be banned from supermarkets. There's a large Sunday morning contingent who come into our local Tesco wearing muddy rugby kit or dirty jodhpurs and riding boots.

You know not everyone showers before they get dressed as a matter of routine right? Not just those who want to nip out for breakfast and then put their PJs back on when they get home.
