Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

I have an asymmetric pixie. There is no way I could ever cut it myself, how on Earth would I do the close cropped back?

Aluna · 09/01/2026 16:06

I used to think that but then I found a hairdresser abroad on YT who women travel from all over the world to see - and you know what - I can see why. He’s amazing. Suddenly £1000 seems fair enough. 😆

ThatMintMember · 09/01/2026 16:07

Hairdressers are skilled. I cut my husbands hair during lockdown, it took about 4 hours over 2 days and looked horrendous, there's no way i would attempt to cut my own hair 😂 I pay £45 every 8 weeks for my hair to he dyed, washed, cut and blow dried. I think that's a bargain and keeps all the mess out of my house!

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 09/01/2026 16:08

I cut my own hair and have for years. To be fair, if you asked anyone who knows me they'd probably say my hair is an eccentric mess.
Luckily, I don't care. 😂

Christmaseree · 09/01/2026 16:08

£45 plus £5 tip every 7 weeks and a £5 fringe trim in-between.

No I’m not cutting my own hair, having lovely hair is worth £1 ish a day to me.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 09/01/2026 16:09

There is no chance I could cut (or colour) my hair and have it look as good as it does when I have it done professionally.
I don’t complain about the cost though as I think it’s worth every penny.

All hairdressers are not that skilled. Some are skilled, yes.

However we have all heard many , many stories of women paying huge money to hairdressers, and not being happy with the result

I cut my own hair but it's long and wavy. A good hairdresser is worth the money.

I used to go to a hairdressers a long time ago. I got more compliments on my hair, when I cut my own hair.

I pay £22 (admittedly, I get mine done at the kids' salon where i take the dc). I definitely would not trust myself to cut my own hair!
I think there's a cultural idea of visits to the hairdressers' being a self-care thing, with long sit downs in comfortable chairs, scalp massage as well as a hair wash, glass of bubbly (or at the very least a cuppa) and a BFF-style chat with the hairdresser. And it wouldn't feel luxurious if it was cheap.

(I just want to get my hair cut and leave so the above is not worth it for me, but I realise that others have different preferences)

Ahsheeit · 09/01/2026 16:12

I have short hair and pay £16 at a barbers. Same style costs me £50 in a salon and takes soooo much longer.

Doesn’t a really mean they’re not skilled though.

My friends award winning hairdresser is fantastic at cutting her hair which is short and straight. She isn’t great at cutting my curly hair (and vice versa for my hairdresser).

To claim we can all just cut our own hair is laughably stupid and offensive to hairdressers who have trained and work hard

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:12

What do you mean "yeah right".

See this is what I think is shocking.

Marketing companies have made women think that its not even possible to cut our own hair and we MUST get someone else to do it.

Its easy to cut hair

Completely disagree that it's "easy" to cut your own hair. I have very fine hair that needs very specific layers to look half way decent and there is no way I could do that myself - especially the back. I find it hard enough to trim my fringe without it looking wonky and believe me I have tried- it looked shit.

I dont want to look shit

modernminimalist · 09/01/2026 16:13

I have curly hair, and I only trust one hairdresser who is a specialist
haopily pay him £140 ever 9 months

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:13

Have you ever tried?

Christmaseree · 09/01/2026 16:14

OP do you feel the same about why do people pay x amount to get their electrics or plumbing sorted out, why don’t they do that themselves? Or why doesn’t everyone paint their own rooms, do their own gardening, clean their own homes and so on?

mistyeveningponder · 09/01/2026 16:14

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:13

I have. It looked terrible.

Wow. Its scissors. There are loads of youtube videos on how to cut our own hair

I agree with you OP. My mum cut her own hair all her life pretty much and it always looked fine. I just give my ends a trim every so often and that's it. So much money saved. Have never understood why you'd spend so much when you can spend nothing.

You find it easy to cut your hair. That's not necessarily applicable to every other woman on the planet.

£1k? or is that a typo ?

LauraIpsum · 09/01/2026 16:16

I cut my own, but I have very easy hair to manage, and I just do variations on long, layered styles, sometimes fringes. Hair that is below the shoulders is a lot more forgiving of a bit of wonkiness than cuts which end above them. However, if I had shorter hair, or curly hair, or fine hair, or something a bit different, I would still be going to a hairdressers.

Oh yes, my fringe trauma, I’m not through that again to save a fiver.
