Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

I’m sure it’s easy to cut your own hair. And also easy to make a complete cows ear of it.

Please show pictures of your hair from all angles so we can see just how nice it looks as I’ve a feeling some of those people saying it looks nice are perhaps being polite

You are misreading. Can you stop being so aggressive.

I didnt say that i didnt say it was easy.

I did say that it was easy

As part of a larger point about how hair companies are brainwashing us. That was the main point

Edited

Just because I disagree with you does not mean I am being "aggressive". You on the other hand, are coming across as extremely patronising by informing us we are all "brainwashed".

Its not my fault if you didnt express your point clearly from the beginning and then chose to be all "well its easy for me so it should be easy for you" afterwards which obscured the point you meant to make

YYYDlilah · 09/01/2026 16:27

@Moontan , What do you mean "yeah right".
It probably doesn't look as good as you think it does.

FlyingApple · 09/01/2026 16:28

I don't like going cause I wish they'd just get it over with. It's actually one of those times where I'd thoroughly prefer some silence for once.

If I could cut my own hair well, I would.

I used to think that but then I found a hairdresser abroad on YT who women travel from all over the world to see - and you know what - I can see why. He’s amazing. Suddenly £1000 seems fair enough. 😆

Is he the TikTok guy in Dubai? His consultation videos are fascinating, but we never find out the price 😁

Why have you made up a scenario to post this thread that's clearly false. You were literally just discussing this exact issue on another thread?

It's fair enough to ask a question but why make up the false narrative?

Eh what? Are you okay.

How does discussing the same thing on another thread, mean that its false?

It means that its true

I can't imagine cutting my own hair. I'm sure it would look terrible. I just let it grow during lockdown. Kudos to you if you can do it and it looks ok.

Having said that, there's no way I would spend 100 pounds to get my hair cut, even though I could easily afford it, and if I did I certainly wouldn't be complaining about it. I go to a walk in unisex salon and pay 15 pounds and I'm perfectly happy with the cuts I get.

Calling me ignorant is aggressive. Calm your posts down.

I couldn't cut my hair to how I like it. I'm post menopause and pay to have it cut and coloured. I've just stopped using box dyes and trimming the ends myself. I feel a lot better and consider the £20 a week (so £1000 a year) worth it. I've just bought a Dyson (£315) so I can blow dry my hair to look professionally done. Women aren't fooled into anything, we make choices.

I used to go to a hairdressers a long time ago. I got more compliments on my hair, when I cut my own hair.

Good for you.
I get a lot of compliments on my hair - actually it’s running joke amongst my friends and DH that I’ll get at least one comment about my hair on a night out. My hairdresser is a genius.

Isn’t this a clear case of ‘you do you’? I don’t begrudge paying for my hair appointment and I can afford it so it’s not an issue.

CosmicTea · 09/01/2026 16:26

I alternate between cutting my hair and getting it cut. I figure it's easier to cut hair that has already been cut well, and better to reset my own imperfect cut every so often by a professional. Best of both worlds.

Now this I get

Waitingfordoggo · 09/01/2026 16:29

I’m completely ham-fisted and can’t style my own hair let alone cut it.

No, that is stating a fact. It is an ignorant statement to argue that just because something is "easy" for you, its "easy" for everyone.

Mumstheword1983 · 09/01/2026 16:30

I'm the opposite. Mine is £22 for a cut twice a year. Husband pays £23.50 every 4 weeks.

Would never cut my own. Maybe the fringe. Cut my husband's hair in lockdown. Was awful!

Grumblies · 09/01/2026 16:30

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:28

Because your colleague didn't just come in and tell you this. You were arguing about hairdresser costs on another thread and then made this thread with a odd and randomly concocted tale.

Why not just ask if others also cut their own hair?

TwistedWonder · 09/01/2026 16:30

My friend is my hairdresser. She’s got nearly 40 years experience after starting as a Vidal Sassoon trainee at 16 then going on to manage various salons.

She charges me £125 for a cut and balayage. If she was still in her salon it would be double that.

Its worth every penny imo.

Wintersgirl · 09/01/2026 16:31

Who cares if people pay to get their hair cut? What's it to you? It's up to the indivudual how they spend their money....

LavenderBlue19 · 09/01/2026 16:31

Like many people, I tried cutting my hair in lockdown. It looked utterly shit. I am very happy to pay for a skilled professional to do it.

Jellybunny56 · 09/01/2026 16:32

Tried it in lockdown, absolutely never again😂

And frankly I don’t want to. Yeah with a bit of time and effort I could probably learn to cut my own hair just like I could learn to do lots of other things, lay carpet, tile the kitchen, but I don’t!

It's like when people brag that they do all their own decorating. Then you visit and are polite, while thinking that there's no way you could live with that.

Yes! I’ve looked at his pricelist 😬

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/01/2026 16:32

A few reasons for not cutting your own hair off the top of my head:
Lacking the skills - not everyone is able to follow a tutorial accurately
Lacking the time - time poor people will find it easier to pay someone than have to learn to diy
Wanting human contact - enough said, some people don’t have many people to talk to
Its a pamper session / treat
Range of movement - eg frozen shoulder
Energy levels - I have chronic fatigue I don’t have the energy to diy

That wasnt my point though.

My point is that the hair companies are brainwashing women to think that they MUST pay a lot of money to get someone else to cut their hair. They dont want women to cut their own hair

It was the same when razor companies all of a sudden told women that they must shave their legs. So that women would buy razors

Edited

No, I’m not brainwashed. I don’t WANT to cut my own hair. I never have.
I’ve been going to the same hairdresser for 20 years. It’s her own small business so I’m not entirely sure how I’m being brainwashed by ‘hair companies’.

The point is - why do they charge women so much more than they charge men?
