Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

I would never cut my own hair. It’s really thick. My amazing hairdresser takes great pains over it. I pay £140 for cut and colour every 6 weeks and he is worth every penny.

Noshadelamp · 09/01/2026 16:34

Its easy to cut hair @Moontan

Physically cutting hair is easy, but cutting an actual hair style and tailoring it to each individual person's hair, face, style etc is a learned and practiced skill.

Do you know what angle to hold the hair? How to cut each section in relation to the section next to it? What angle to hold your scissors when cutting for the desired result?

For that matter, what scissors are you using?Professional scissors can cost hundreds of pounds and more, and are treated as valuable tools.

Iocanepowder · 09/01/2026 16:34

Pretty sure that if everyone found it ‘easy’ to cut their own hair, this would have been a lockdown discovery. Clearly not.

Resilience · 09/01/2026 16:34

I cut my own hair and have done for 30 years. It is long and very wavy (would be properly curly if I bothered to style it) so accuracy isn’t too big a deal. I get regular compliments on my hair but I think it’s largely because of its colour (strawberry blonde) and thickness rather than its style, which is ‘relaxed’ (a mess usually in a ponytail) t say the least.

so yes, it’s easy to cut my hair but probably because it’s not styled and I don’t have to do anything with precision.

Losingitalloveragain · 09/01/2026 16:34

Oh God, does anyone else remember the MN haircut?

Howarewealldoing · 09/01/2026 16:34

I'm not stalking you, I literally came from that thread straight to this one. You were replying unkindly to another poster who said she paid that much for a haircut and then made this thread. That's weirder in my opinion.

Kumquatzest · 09/01/2026 16:35

I can't imagine paying £100 for a haircut. Just to be clear, it was just a haircut? No colouring, highlighting, keratin treatment etc? I got a wash, cut and blow dry for £35 recently. But I live in the most economically deprived region of the UK so I'd expect you'd pay a lot more in London.

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:35

Aluna · 09/01/2026 16:32

Yes! I’ve looked at his pricelist 😬

Does he charge 1000 pounds? Ouch

Who cares if people pay to get their hair cut? What's it to you? It's up to the indivudual how they spend their money....

This. My God, this place can be so judgey at times. Now women are wrong for getting their hair cut 😆

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:12

What do you mean "yeah right".

See this is what I think is shocking.

Marketing companies have made women think that its not even possible to cut our own hair and we MUST get someone else to do it.

Its easy to cut hair

No marketing company has persuaded me to go to the hairdressers. Not sure why they would be involved even? I go to my amazing hairdresser because she is superbly skilled and colours my hair beautifully. I could never do that. You do your hair but don't suggest that we can all do it!

I have an asymmetric pixie. There is no way I could ever cut it myself, how on Earth would I do the close cropped back?

An asymmetric pixie ? Just buy a toupe and yank it sideways a bit. You'll get the same result. 😂

You are the weird one. Nothing that i wrote on the other thread contradicts what i wrote on this thread.
Stop bringing stuff from one thread to another.

My colleague did complain about her haircut to me. I do cut my own hair.

leave it now

No I don't think I'm being brainwashed by Big Hair. Hair cutting is a skill I do not have (m'lud I offer as evidence my sorry attempts to cut my sons' hair during lock down).

My hair is very straight and I have a short layered style that would look crap if not done well. I'm in the salon for 2-3 hours (I have foils) and receive skilled attention from someone who trained to provide this very specific service. The salon owner has business overheads to cover. And it's not a chain.

I agree a £120 cut and colour is a nice-to-have rather than a necessity, which I would no doubt have to manage without if I couldn't afford it. But that's a different question.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 09/01/2026 16:37

Or you can do what I do, have it cut about once every 10 years 😂

Because I spend all my money colouring my hair, which is fabulous.

ElsieMc · 09/01/2026 16:37

I have a short layered pixie and could not do it myself. My mobile haircutter charges £20 every 6 weeks. I home dye in between.

I do trim my fringe and manage ok. During lockdown DH cut the back for me avoiding a mullet. It looked ok.

I cut my gs's hair during lockdown. It was a cut of such evil they made me shave their heads. It made me appreciate decent hairdressers.

But when lockdown ended my hairdresser was very nervous and gave me a haircut like I had shown him a pic of Edmund Blackadders Elizabethan phase and said that please. At least it gave my family a laugh.

Whilst you are lucky to cut proficiently op, my tale shows you can never fully trust a hairdresser. I could never relax in a salon.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 09/01/2026 16:37

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:33

The point is - why do they charge women so much more than they charge men?

My husband pays £23 for a dry cut and it takes 20 mins. He has it done once a month.
I pay £95 every 6 weeks. It takes 3 hours and includes a colour and toner.

I think I get a pretty good deal tbh.

Hockorydickerydock · 09/01/2026 16:38

It’s takes 4 hours todo my hair and she is amazing so I am willing to pay top dollar

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/01/2026 16:38

I'm cleverly having one DD train as a hairdresser so I won't have to pay soon. I cut everyone's hair in lockdown and made a decent job of it but didn't touch my own.

I'm sure I could cut my own hair but as I barely spend more on having mine cut than DH does on his, given I have mine cut half as often, I'd rather someone else who really knows what they are doing, does it. I cannot blow dry my own hair the way the hairdresser does either, I do not have the patience.

I don't even live in London.

Im on the south coast. It probably costs even more in london

Hairdressers are skilled. I cut my husbands hair during lockdown, it took about 4 hours over 2 days and looked horrendous, there's no way i would attempt to cut my own hair 😂 I pay £45 every 8 weeks for my hair to he dyed, washed, cut and blow dried. I think that's a bargain and keeps all the mess out of my house!

How?! I’ve been cutting DH’s hair since lockdown, it’s a ten minute job fading from 2 to a 6 grade.

DH has cut my hair before now, even into entirely new styles, but I now have more complex colouring that I don’t want to bother him with so get a cut and colour every quarter for £120.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/01/2026 16:39

And I certainly wouldn't be doing my own highlights.

momahoho1 · 09/01/2026 16:39

I pay £30, lovely lady on my street working out of her house, money well spent every year or so, I’m not high maintenance
