Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

My neighbour dyes and cuts her own shoulder length hair. It's very frizzy at the ends (fact) and the colour does her no favours (imo). Yes it's none of my damn business but secretly I'm itching to take her to a good hairstylist.

I can and have trimmed my own hair, and my daughters. It’s quite easy. I go to the hairdressers 3 times a year for foils to brighten my hair. That’s not something I can do myself and yes I have tried myself with a cap.

starafuzina · 11/01/2026 10:27

I have very thick hair with kinks in it. I need someone with experience and skills to tame it, and even then it probably takes them a bit of getting used to my hair before they can manage to do it well!

This is the similar to nails, a lot of people can do it themselves but there's something about going in and having someone else do it, usually to a better standard.

It's strange when posters are insistent on it being easy though, despite loads of people saying it isn't.

When I've tried, I've ended up with a sore neck and it never looks brilliant.

When I've been to the hairdressers, I'm swishing around for days.

Interesting there's been no reply to Qs of other things ypu could save money on and do yourself.

I think it’s possibly easy if you’re just giving your self a trim or just ‘cutting’. Not so easy if you’re cutting a particular style or certain hair type.

My hairdresser doesn’t cut her own hair because it’s not possible for her to do her style on herself.

What do you mean "yeah right".

See this is what I think is shocking.

Marketing companies have made women think that its not even possible to cut our own hair and we MUST get someone else to do it.

Its easy to cut hair

No it’s not! and it’s insulting to hairdressers to suggest that their skilled job is easy

it’s also an insulting to say I think this way due to being brainwashed by marketing

I’ve just spent £180 on a radical short asymmetrical do with highlights - no way could I physically cut my own hair absolutely no way ! I’ve tried colouring my hair with mixed results

whilst this haircut was way too expensive and I’m looking for a cheaper alternative going forward I will always treat myself to a professional job as I love the whole experience . As a working professional I don’t want weird mistakes on my head like I did when I was a student

I think it’s weird that people don’t shop from charity shops as I do and I think designer clothes are over priced crap so everyone prioritises different things

ByKeenBlueHelper · 11/01/2026 12:39

I haven't been to the hairdresser's in a good 5 years lol I do my dh hair aswell

Notbridezilla · 11/01/2026 13:02

I get my hair cut and coloured every 6-8 weeks. I pay more than your colleague. So what?? I can afford it, I like my hairdresser and she does a great job. I don’t really spend much on myself otherwise, I don’t wear expensive clothes etc. so why shouldn’t I do this to treat myself? No interest in doing it myself.

Not disagreeing on it being easy for some
It's the posters that insist it should be easy for everyone to cut their own hair.

Closed mindset thinking.

Even some who find it easy have said they're happy to pay someone else to do it.

I'm good at ironing for example and actually enjoy it unlike most people, but would I pay someone to do it if I could afford to, absolutely!
It would free up time to do other things i enjoy more and the feeling of getting a treat.

Bitter experience has taught me not to cut my own hair. I don't mind looking slightly crazy but I'm not walking about looking like I'd escaped from an institution, as happened the last time I tried.
If you have good eyesight and fairly straight hair, I suppose you might get away with it but I have very poor eyesight & wavy/wayward hair. It's taken me years to find a hairdresser who can cut my hair the way I like. I pay £48 every 8 weeks for a wash & cut. He's talking about retiring & I don't know what I'll do then 🙁

Kidnap and imprison him, like Kathy Bates in Misery!

IDontHateRainbows · 11/01/2026 15:12

I tend to have my hair cut a bit shorter than I want it then grow it out (.easy one length bob style), i quite like seeing it grow and change, means I'm only in the hairdresser 3 times a year, wet cut £30, that's less than £100 for a year of haircuts.

takealettermsjones · 11/01/2026 15:18

I cut my daughters' hair every 3 months, when they just need trims. Once a year they come with me to my salon and get a "proper" cut. They both have fine, shoulder length (ish) hair.

My hair? Absolutely not. Thick, coarse, curly. Wild. I did it in lockdown, absolutely never again 🤣

I want to know where PPs are getting colour, cut and dry for £45??? 😅

Magrathea56 · 13/01/2026 12:25

@Moontan for many women it's not just a haircut but a bit of 'me' time, a chance to relax and not have to do anything for an hour or two (depending on what you're having done).

If you want to cut your own hair, fine but I wouldn't attempt my own cut, I worry about trimming my fringe!

VanillaImpulse · 13/01/2026 22:10

My hairdresser charges £80 for a cut now, which is ridiculous for me with straight hair that just needs a trim. I can’t understand why I have to pay the same for that as someone with loads of layers that takes a lot more work. Needless to say, I just get the most junior member of staff to do the cut and my usual hairdresser to do the colour. Still almost £200 which is crazy

I’d be changing my hairdresser! That’s extortionate!

330ml · 14/01/2026 20:42

I had my hair cut today. £15.

Newyearawaits · 14/01/2026 20:51

My hair is layered and graduated and needs the skills and expertise of a hairdresser. I have had times in my life when I went hungry ( thankfully those days are over) and I always consider my monthly visit to the hairdresser as my treat to myself! I spend a lot of money on my adored grandchildren which I love doing.
My hairdresser appointments are selfishly for me ( and I am very grateful).
