Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

I do agree that women are royally ripped off @Moontan You won't get many people on here agreeing though.

Case in point. DH went (2 months ago) to a 'call in without an appointment' barbers, run by 2 sisters in their 40s. One of them spent 25-30 minutes cutting and trimming, and it looked really smart and nice, well styled. £10.00.

My neighbour went to a hairdressing 'salon' in town last month, not a well known hairdresser, one who has 3 salons within 20 miles, and thinks they're better than they are. She paid £57 for a haircut. Well it was a wash, cut, and blow dry. Took half an hour in total. No dry cut anymore. Can't make enough from you that way. 🙄

But women aren't ripped off compared to men are they? Wink

Please post a photo of your hair. I am sure we would all love to see your genius at work

No way. Im not going to post a photo of myself to strangers online. Internet safety. You shouldnt ask.

Are you going to post a photo of yourself?

I have long layered hair and a thick fringe, no way I could do that myself.
I went from a short bob to long hair, one day I went to the hairdresser to have it layered, and the difference was huge. I wowed to never go back to homemade haircuts.
I go to the hairdresser twice a year for the haircut, and once every 3 weeks for the fringe, that might be 230 a year in hairdresser and I consider it money well-spent.

I also do my nails every 4 weeks. No need to but I like it.

That wasnt my point though.

My point is that the hair companies are brainwashing women to think that they MUST pay a lot of money to get someone else to cut their hair. They dont want women to cut their own hair

It was the same when razor companies all of a sudden told women that they must shave their legs. So that women would buy razors

Edited

And that they must wash their hair every day, so they’d buy more shampoo. I do get that. But cutting hair is different. I get it if you have long hair, you only need to cut the ends off. But shorter styles take skill.

The point is - why do they charge women so much more than they charge men?

Well that ones easy. Because it takes less than 10 minutes to cut my hair, so I'd feel ripped off if I got charged a tenner, let alone a hundred

smallglassbottle · 09/01/2026 16:40

I hate going to the hairdressers and usually can't face it, plus the expense. I was watching a YouTube video which explained the shoelace method of cutting a basic bob. I persuaded dh to help and thought "fuck it, I don't have a corporate job", and went for it. It actually looks okay and is even 😄 I've always cut my own fringe as I like it shortish. Yes, I look like Olive from On The Buses, no, I absolutely don't care 😂

Yes my nearest barbers charges men 10 pounds too

@zov I have long hair so it takes longer to style and I pay about £60 every three months. My husband has short hair and goes for a cut roughly every month. He pays about £25.

Therefore, he pays more than I do throughout the year for haircuts

Erm because women generally have more hair, it's not difficult, not many men have a balayage done....

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/01/2026 16:41

DH pays about £16 for a hair cut, probably takes about 20 minutes. I pay £45 for a wash, cut and blow dry, takes an hour. I don't think that's a rip off. Plus DH has it done every six weeks, I have mine cut every 12 weeks.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/01/2026 16:42

Because whilst 3 out of 4 haircuts will look perfect, the 4th that DP does will for no apparent reason be the one where he misinterprets 'straight across at collarbone level/just get the ratty bits at the end' as 'do a slanting chop halfway up the back of my skull on one side, panic and do another chunk heading up towards my left ear before trying to even it out with a rainbow shaped 'straight' line so it looks as though I've had my hair done by somebody more at home crutching a ram'.

A woman on here said that her husband went to a barbers for 35 minutes.

They still only charged him 10 pounds

We are not talking about balyage./ highlights/ extras.

We are talking about cuts.

I have cut my own hair for years now. Wet ponytail, pulled right to the front, cut straight across, bingo! Layers and all! Takes the ends off and leaves the length.
I think it's ridiculous to pay such a massive amount of money to have your hair cut. I've got better things to spend my money on, hair isn't one of them!

This narrative that women are too stupid to make their own choices is really tedious.

StrawberrySquash · 09/01/2026 16:43

It's fair enough that we pay a fair amount because our haircuts do tend to take a while. But I do feel they sometimes faff around for an awful long time on a simple haircut. I cut mine in lockdown and have stayed doing my own since. But for a more complicated cut I wouldn't dream of trying!

I guess it's hard to price all the different sorts of cuts so they just go in the middle and it all evens out. Do men with complicated haircuts go to fancy barber's and pay more, whereas my dad just goes and gets short back and sides.

BillyBites · 09/01/2026 16:43

I dare say I probably could cut/colour my own hair. And I probably could make my own clothes, whilst I’m at it.
Both would look beyond shite though so thanks but no thanks, OP. I’m happy to continue paying the (relatively) modest amount I spend every two months to the hairdresser friend who’s done it for me for over 20 years. No marketing ploys here.

Thats also how i cut my hair.

I tie a ponytail in front of my my face. The hair is pulled tight in the ponytail. Then I do a quick cut. It takes two minutes and it looks great.

Then i add layers at the front

Yes, there has been a weird influx of posts like this recently. I thought school had re-started already

landlordhell · 09/01/2026 16:46

£88 every 8 weeks including a half head of foils. Worth it to me. I have no other professional treatments

wossupthen · 09/01/2026 16:46

I pay £97 for my haircut. I have been going to him for nearly thirty years and he is amazing. I have a disfigurement (horrible word) which made it awful and embarrassing to go to hairdressers from a child to when I found him, and he has always worked around it and even made ways for it to almost show and me not actually care.
People tut and look appalled when I mention his but I couldn't give a monkeys! Sometimes it's a bit of a financial stretch, but it's a non negotiable expense for my mental health to be honest

Makes me laugh when people say this. As if anyone would post a photo of themselves on here!

And what if your hair looks lovely (which I'm sure it does.) What then? Such a pointless thing to say! Of course the OP's hair is going to look OK. No-one is going to go through life looking like they had a fight with the lawnmower!

Well good for you, but that's just one style.

Londonrach1 · 09/01/2026 16:47

I pay 20 but it was 25 last time for a wet cut twice a day. I think that's a bargain and the hairdresser is skilled cutter. We've a training college near by and I have had my hair cut for free although I have her a Easter egg as it was Easter and I had one in my bag. There's always requests near me for every type of haircut you ever need for the college
