Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

I agree. I can't imagine paying that for a haircut. I've always been lucky to have family and friends who cut my hair for a favour but recently I've just not had time so trim it myself. It is not hard if you have long hair.

BananagramBadger · 09/01/2026 16:17

I cut and colour my own hair - and it is not great. Looks good very briefly.

I’m too old to be this cheap - send help.

You find it easy to cut your hair. That's not necessarily applicable to every other woman on the planet.

Yeah exactly. So fed up of this attitude on here that if it's easy for me, it must be easy for everyone. Its such an ignorant view

Denim4ever · 09/01/2026 16:19

I have longish hair so I try not to go too often. I have a few highlights but I don't go as often as hairdressers try to encourage.

I know it's annoying, can't imagine layering your own hair...yeah dead easy

That wasnt my point though.

My point is that the hair companies are brainwashing women to think that they MUST pay a lot of money to get someone else to cut their hair. They dont want women to cut their own hair

It was the same when razor companies all of a sudden told women that they must shave their legs. So that women would buy razors

Yes it was, you told us it was "easy" and said "wow just scissors". I am saying its not easy and clearly most people in the poll think YABU so yes, like I say, ignorant.

I find layering the front of my hair to be easy. I could do it without even watching a youtube tutorial.

I watched a youtube tutorial on how to best cut the back of my hair

I had a go at the "mumsnet haircut" a few years ago. It looked terrible and I have no wish to try again.

I have a pixie cut with an undercut fade. There is no way I could do that myself. However, I go to the Turkish barbers for it doing where it costs me £11. Until about August though, I had waist length hair with balayage and I would pay £150 with colour and £60 without. I would pay it every time over cutting it myself.

I really don't think anyone's brainwashed. I'd hazard a guess that most people know there is an option to buy a pair of scissors and cut their own hair, and they decide against it because there are (usually) qualified people out there who will (in most cases) do a much better job.

I like my hair coloured and cut by a good stylist. It’s one of my guilty pleasures. 👍

I didnt say that i didnt say it was easy.

As part of a larger point about how hair companies are brainwashing us. That was the main point

I couldn't cut my hair myself - it looked awful in lockdown.

I am so glad lockdown has ended for the sake of my hair

Funnywonder · 09/01/2026 16:24

I cut my own hair because I hate going to the hairdresser. The noise. The feeling of the sink at the back of my neck. The mirrors. The inaudible chitchat. The head massage ambush. I also hated the passive aggressive remarks about dyeing my own hair, although I don’t dye it anymore. The end result was never worth the torture. My hair is long and I only take the dead ends off. It’s also wavy, so it’s not noticeable if it’s not completely even. I think😬🤣

PeopleTheyAintNoGood · 09/01/2026 16:25

I've just had mine cut. I came home and finished it myself to shape it to suit me.

I often prefer to do a trim myself, but mines wavy and layered.
Someone with straight hair would probably struggle more.

TheWytch · 09/01/2026 16:25

There is absolutely no way I can cut my own hair and expect to look presentable. It's very coarse, very very thick and quite wavy. Most hairdressers can't cut it well either so having found one that can I will pay what she asks.

I do cut DH's hair though - he's not vain and I do at least as good a job as the local barber he used to frequent. The money we save goes towards offsetting my hairdressing bills.

underthelights · 09/01/2026 16:25

A hair cut and colour for me is part of my wellbeing. I like the pampering aspect of it which is why I am happy to pay. I love someone else washing my hair and that head massage is bliss! Also find having foils done relaxing.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/01/2026 16:26

I would never do it myself but I do agree we women are being ripped off. DH gets his done, he's there about 45 minutes and pays £12. I only ever get a wet cut - 20 minutes and £35 poorer.

Grumblies · 09/01/2026 16:26

Why have you made up a scenario to post this thread that's clearly false. You were literally just discussing this exact issue on another thread?

It's fair enough to ask a question but why make up the false narrative?

X123x321X · 09/01/2026 16:26

I cut my own hair. It's not easy for everyone and depends on the style.

CosmicTea · 09/01/2026 16:26

I alternate between cutting my hair and getting it cut. I figure it's easier to cut hair that has already been cut well, and better to reset my own imperfect cut every so often by a professional. Best of both worlds.

TheKateColumbo · 09/01/2026 16:26

I’ve done a hairdressing course and can’t cut my own hair well. I could do it and would look ok but not as good as when my hairdresser does it.
The stylists at the salon I go to do each other’s hair…

frowningnotdrowning · 09/01/2026 16:27

Post a photo of your haircut with your face blanked out.

Yes I have in the past cut my own hair but not well. It is hard to get mine to match on both sides. I cut Dh's hair every 4 weeks but that is clippers with different combs and I also grade between combs. The difference is I can see the back of his head.

I get my hair cut and coloured every 6 weeks nowhere near £100 and I am always very happy with the outcome because my hairdresser is skilled at cutting and colouring my hair.
