Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

I have cut my own hair for years now. Wet ponytail, pulled right to the front, cut straight across, bingo! Layers and all! Takes the ends off and leaves the length.
I think it's ridiculous to pay such a massive amount of money to have your hair cut. I've got better things to spend my money on, hair isn't one of them!

Why are you calling women ridiculous for spending their money how they like?

And not all women have long hair. So you technique doesn't apply to all of us.

This narrative that women are too stupid to make their own choices is really tedious.

This 100%

HoseGoblin · 09/01/2026 16:48

I cut my own hair when I was a teenager.

Now I'm an adult one of the luxuries of having an adult salary is having someone else do it for me. It's long, thick and curly and looks so much better when my stylist who specialises in curly hair cuts it.

I also pay a cleaner even though I'm quite capable of cleaning myself, and a waxer even though I could wax myself. All of the above make my life easier and mean a better job than I could do gets done. I'm ok with that.

VickyEadieofThigh · 09/01/2026 16:49

I glanced at one of our town's hairdressers' price list yesterday. They have lower prices for men than for women and I'm aware that most if not all others do this, too. And it's not because men tend to have short hair and women long - the women's prices are scaled for length of hair.

HOW do hairdressers get away with this?

HorrorPudding · 09/01/2026 16:50

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:12

What do you mean "yeah right".

See this is what I think is shocking.

Marketing companies have made women think that its not even possible to cut our own hair and we MUST get someone else to do it.

Its easy to cut hair

@Moontan presumably you apply the idea that marketing companies have fooled people into paying for things they could do themselves to other areas? What other areas?

Wintersgirl · 09/01/2026 16:51

Why are you insulting any woman who pays to get their haircut brainwashed? Don't you think they can make informed decisions about how they spend their own money?

Women's hairstyles tend to be more complicated.

"I think there's a cultural idea of visits to the hairdressers' being a self-care thing, with long sit downs in comfortable chairs, scalp massage as well as a hair wash, glass of bubbly (or at the very least a cuppa) and a BFF-style chat with the hairdresser. And it wouldn't feel luxurious if it was cheap."

Oh no. I hate the whole experience, but I'm still VERY happy to pay for it because I think the way my hair looks is very important. I don't bother with professional nails or anything else similar, but your hair frames your face.

If money was very short, I'd ask for a quick dry trim like some men get at the barber's and doing it myself would be last resort.

DistractMe · 09/01/2026 16:53

Fun fact - Male barbering and female hair cutting are actually different skills with separate training.

They're not really. A lot of women want basic trims.

Ive seen men get their hair trimmed. It took the same time, as me getting my hair trimmed. Yet women are charged more.

Yes, but if a woman wants a cut like a man she can ask for that. Some hairdressers will do it like that. As children, we went to the barber's so that's also an option if the barber agrees.

Timeforaglassofwine · 09/01/2026 16:54

If I'm going to sit in a salon and get one to one attention for 3 hours, then I'll expect to pay about £100. It really isn't a rip off. It's all about choice, I work hard for my family and deserve to be able to treat myself to a decent haircut. I'm sure it could cut and colour it myself if i spent enough time training myself, but prefer to let a professional do the job whilst I relax.

Well yes a short back and sides and shaving a beard is not the same as a balayage, but there is some cross over for women with masculine styles and men with feminine styles.

DIY haircuts need to remain firmly in 2020. As do diy dog grooms etc etc

Neither my DS or miniature poodle have ever really forgiven me for my attempts back then

Well, we interpret that post differently.

It had the same sneery undertone as your posts.

OP asks a question. Is pretty much unanimously told people disagree with her because (and they list their very valid reasons)….

OP continues to argue that they’re wrong. Bonkers!

As it happens I pay £23 for a cut and blow dry every 6/7 weeks. My son and husband pay £14 for a cut every 3 weeks so they work out roughly the same cost.

Wildywondrous · 09/01/2026 16:56

I cut mine and also cut my kids, Mums and husbands, I'm pretty handy at a lot of things though and do most of my own diy etc, maybe because I'm not well off it's always forced me to have a go at things first then pay someone as a last resort.

A couple of years ago I spent my birthday money on having my hair cut and coloured professionally, it cost me £160 and then the follow up trim 6 weeks later was £45, that's not something I could justify for myself so I've gone back to box dyes and cutting it myself.
I couldn't copy what the hairdresser did as it was a long bob with lots of layers so while it doesn't look the same now it's still neat and tidy and I actually prefer the box dye colour.

When did you train to be a hairdresser/barber?

I suppose people choose to pay for all sorts of things they could do themselves, car washing, nails, etc. It's a personal choice and it provides work.

StripeK · 09/01/2026 16:57

For many years I'd only get my hair cut twice a year, and always on offer (Groupon/Wowcher were my go to) but after turning 30 I decided to stick with a salon as was very pleased with the cut I received when I went in for my intro price cut. I get it done every 3 months, and pay around £60 but to me it's not just a hair cut, it's a yummy hot chocolate (or iced tea in summer) that I get to enjoy without my children bothering me. It's a chat with another adult about adult things rather than when sports day is or if we are going to the PTA event. It's a lush head massage while sitting in a massaging chair for 10 mins. All totally worth £60 a quarter IMHO

Hairdressers for women are all trained differently aswell. There are highlight specialists etc.

But if someone doesnt want an extra like colouring

If they just want a cut.

The fact is if i want to pay for a basic trim, amd my male friend wants to pay for a basic trim, I will pay more than he does for it

I pay a lot more because I get a colour as well, but it's a good point that men (and women with very short hair) have to go more often so you shouldn't compare the cost of one cut.
