No. Last take way was 5 years ago when we had no kitchen. Honestly in the mums I know no one has takeaways so it's rare within the people I know. I think I was the most recent re one.

I don't do friday takeaways as standard, but I do buy myself a coffee twice a week - once as a treat around an activity i don't particularly enjoy (makes it easier) and once as a regular meetup with a friend. That's £5. Once a month - when i need a break- i get the kids a meal from the chippy (2x£3 so around £1.50 a week on average)... i eat a few of their chips and have topped porridge once they're in bed (which i love!) Most weekends I'll spend around £12 in a cafe after a park trip or walk (coffee for me, milk or water for the kids and a little treat to share). So that's about £18.50 a week on average which i spend on 'treat' food, which I suppose could get a cheap takeaway from McDonalds. But i prefer to do it this way than to get takeaways as I appreciate these treats more.

If I could get a take away it would be SE Asian / Keralan food. If ONLY !
My son tormented me tonight with a pic of their takeaway treat from the legendary Tayyabs in Whitechapel. The saag !!
And I do really, really fancy a curry @Jellycatspyjamas. Obvs I can make my own but that defeats the purpose right ? But I wouldn't have one every week. Tho' it was tempting when one of the best local curry houses was a block away from where I lived in London 😬
If you are having / have had one tonight I hope it was finger lickin' good and you have left overs for tmrw's brekkie !

PurpleCoo · 09/01/2026 23:07

No. I try to be as healthy as I can and cook from scratch

If I am on holiday at the seaside I will get take away fish and chips. We always get a take away on NYE and do a home escape room game. So it's just a handful of times a year really.

I eat out more often though. But I try to pick healthy options when doing so

It was absolutely delicious, thanks. A Friday takeaway is a good way to lure the kids out of their bedrooms (willingly), sit with the parental, chat about school and play some games. It’s one meal out of 21, and it’s a treat in their eyes.

I toasted you with a corner of peshwari naan!

ForFunGoose · 09/01/2026 23:32

Not weekly here, usually only if we get caught out late and haven’t eaten. I have lunch in a Cafe once a week, soup/sandwich. It’s well made and not fast food so am not sure if this counts.

TremendousThirst · 09/01/2026 23:49

Every Friday like clockwork. Usually Chinese, but sometimes Thai, Korean or similar. My DH would revolt if I suggested otherwise and it would feel bizarre to start cooking on a Friday after all these years.

We rarely ever get food midweek or at other times anymore though (no random brunches etc) due to cost.

MinecraftMum40 · 09/01/2026 23:54

Once every 2 months id say-that includes chippy.

This will always descend into “people on here are teeny tiny people who have never eaten a crisp, I eat takeaways every week” vs “what’s a take away? Gosh, that sounds awful? Someone coming to your home and ringing your doorbell? With greasy food for you to gobble??”

meh. We have them sometimes, not regularly, might have one tomorrow. Might not bother.

Edited

Always one extreme or the other on this site isn't it?

I don't get them because I grew up poor and the price actively aggravates me. Any time or effort saved would be outweighed by the frustration of thinking about how much food I could have bought for that. Once I was at a friends' and they ordered Five Guys - I wasn't paying but I was still scandalized internally. It wasn't even good.

It’s just very expensive, and the food isn’t often that nice. The couple of times we’ve done it, it arrives cold. I suppose it depends what you call a takeaway, though. Fish and chips on the beach at the seaside is lovely.

But if you’ve had fewer than five takeaways in your whole life, you’re hardly qualified to comment on the standard of the food, are you? We’re lucky enough to have several good Indian, Thai and Chinese restaurants close by, and are rarely disappointed with the quality of the food. It is expensive, yes, and I can understand may be out of budget for many people, but the sanctimony on this thread about ‘cold, greasy, salty food’ is really OTT.

We thoroughly enjoyed our duck wraps, beef with black pepper and side of bamboo shoots and water chestnuts last night, OP! And thankfully did not have to wake through the night to guzzle gallons of water Hmm Hope you enjoyed yours!

FurForksSake · 09/01/2026 11:48

yes, I should say we can afford but think they are expensive for the quality. We do make pizzas in our pizza oven or buy nice steaks or make our own burgers at home on a Saturday a couple of times a month. Sometimes I’ll make curry and make the effort to make a couple and a daal, naan and bhajis from scratch and we’ll have a curry feast. I don’t find Chinese easy to replicate at home sadly.

I have recently learned to make outstanding Chinese at home and we’re addicted! Try RecipeTinEats website. I recommend the crispy noodle chicken chow mein.

FurForksSake · 10/01/2026 10:10

@PigglyWiggle thanks, will try it out!

Once a month for daughter and i but its usually Greek or Mediterranean. Costs a bloody fortune but as its only once a month we don't mind. Monkfish and King prawn kebabs with Greek rice and salad 🥗 😋😋😋

Ferrfoxache · 10/01/2026 10:32

Indian on a Friday , Chinese on a Saturday, Sometimes 2 for Tuesday Pizzas too, ( we work late and we work hard. We don't smoke, drink moderately and by the time we buy the ingredients to make any of these meals your paying the same if not more. So why not ?

shrunkenhead · 10/01/2026 11:02

Rarely as usually expensive, cold and disappointing! Occasionally i'll have stuff I wouldn't cook at home (as family won't eat it) eg Thai or Indian and I'm not confident I could make better - although I probably could if I CBA!
Once a week would be too regular for us to class as a "treat".

Firsttimemom3 · 10/01/2026 11:20

Once every other month as it’s too expensive. I like McDonald on occasion- what a treat to have it delivered !! However, it’s often very disappointing. We also have the occasional Indian. My fave is the local Italian but it’s too expensive, think : £50 + for 2 pizzas and a salad,

Chocopancakes85 · 10/01/2026 12:41

Yes, we'd have one once a week either Fri or Sat

Zanatdy · 10/01/2026 13:00

Rarely get a takeaway. Kids have always preferred home made. Also chinese takeaways where I live are not great. Years ago when I lived elsewhere I had one weekly but wouldn’t want to pay for one weekly (but would love to eat a good chinese weekly as I love a good chinese). When I relocate in the summer, i’ll be having one monthly.

NoKidsSendDogs · 10/01/2026 17:02

The food is shit where we live so no, not for lack of money, just for lack of food that isn't shit.

TheMauveBeaker · 10/01/2026 18:05

No. Always found the food disappointing. Only have a takeaway about 3 or 4 times a year now, for other people’s birthdays.

gingercat02 · 10/01/2026 18:09

Yes pretty much, but yesterday's cost nearly £50! It's a mad amount of money for 3 people.

BennyHenny · 10/01/2026 18:11

Nope, it’d cost £80-£100 for the family and I wouldn’t want to spend that much per week, even though we have the budget for it. It’s still a treat for us every few months instead.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/01/2026 18:12

We normally go to the pub after work on a Friday (no DC) for a couple and then share sausage and chips from the chippy which is on the way home. Pub's closed for refurbishment this week so we're getting a Chinese delivered tonight. Haven't had one for weeks so I'm very much looking forward to it 😋

FlipFlopVibe · 10/01/2026 18:15

More like once a month for us but on a Saturday. Friday is too much rushing about and getting the kids sorted and we’re all too tired to appreciate it. If we have it on a Saturday I look forward to it all day, can get the kids to bed, glass of wine and then enjoy in peace. Though there’s some good supermarket ready meals we enjoy, not as good obviously but less than half the price and still feels a break from cooking

BooBooDoodle · 10/01/2026 18:18

Costs £40 for a basic chippy without the extras and 2 of the 4 portions are for kids. The quality has nosedived and I’d rather spend that on a meal out every few months. I hate all the price increases of late and I simply won’t pay it because it’s not worth it. We go without quite a lot but this is because of price hikes. We can afford it but I’m refusing to pay over the odds for most things these days.
