To feel a bit annoyed that my DD is no longer vegan?

DD is 22, left home in October and moved in with her boyfriend.

She decided to become vegetarian at 8yo and at 12yo she decided to be vegan.

For 10 years I bought and cooked vegan food for her as she stressed it was so important to her. She knew what extra work and expense this was, having to cook separate meals every night, and the extra expense on my shopping bill.

She was away in her boyfriend's home country for Christmas and New Year, and we are only getting to see her now and they are coming over for dinner on Friday night.

I said I'd seen a lovely vegan recipe to make for her and she said "oh, don't worry mum, I'm not vegan any more, it was just too much faff to make a vegan meal every night, and it costs so much more"

Too much faff and costs more? you don't say?

AIBU to be irritated that she happily let me put in the effort for her to be vegan for 10 years which was apparently so important to her but the second she moves out, she ditches he beliefs because it's too hard for her?

I think everyone (especially the trolls) should educate themselves & watch some documentaries on British farming. Practices such as keeping chickens in small cages, male chick culling, and teeth pulling & tail docking of baby pigs (no anaesthetic) are rife. Approximately 95% of UK pigs are kept in indoor factory-style system, not free roaming as supermarket adverts would have you believe. The conditions are appalling.

Eating meat necessitates this animal abuse and cruelty.

I agree with the posters who have said this sudden change could be a red flag for control and abuse, so if this thread is real and not just to get the meat eaters frothing about veganism, I would be very worried for my child in OPs position.
it wouldn’t be the first time that a thread was created with insincere intentions though.

Anything is possible but that is also the age when many kids who wanted to be vegetarians or vegans stop.

Veganism just isn't trendy anymore I've lost count of the vegan people I know who've gone back to eating meat in the past year or so. It's all about protein now.

This. ^ I know 5 people who have stopped being a vegan over this past year or so. (8 in the past 2 years!) Yes - really! I think they realised what a boring dull way of life it is, and how much it restricts you. 3 (former vegans) came to my house in mid December for a little buffet I did, and they said 'lots of cheese please. LOADS of it. Vegan cheese is shit! we can't wait for real cheese!' Grin)

It's also not very healthy for some either. I know a number of vegans who are/always ill, always down with something, often off sick, and if they hurt themselves/broke a bone, it never heals properly.... OR it takes 4 times longer to heal and even then it doesn't heal fully... With the ones who are no longer vegans, it was only when they started eating eggs and cheese and milk again that they healed better/quicker, and started to have better health/less viruses.

Yes yes yes, I know there are going to be some vegans who say what I'm saying is all nonsense, and they are 'healthier than any dairy eater they know,' 🙄but that doesn't change the fact that I know/have known some very unhealthy vegans! (And many whose health improved significantly when they started eating dairy! Not meat, poultry, or fish - dairy!)

So, yes. Why cook two family meals when one vegan or vegetarian meal can be enjoyed by everyone. That was our approach. And on the whole, it’s cheaper too.

Also, quite a sad response. You really need to get to know @Themaghag how tasty and interesting vegan and vegetarian food is. Tons of recipes online, but Bosh! And The Green Roasting Tin are great books to use. I eat meat and I eat fish and I also eat a lot of plant- based food. That’s mainly as a consequence of having children who’ve followed a vegan or vegetarian diet at some point. And not a Quorn sausage in sight.

Oh come on! The words 'enjoyed', 'vegan' and 'vegetarian' simply aren't compatible!

I think if you ate a meal at Dishoom you could possibly change your mind

AgnesMcDoo · 11/01/2026 17:26

Yes but she was a a child so thoughtless and selfish is part of the deal

Why would you feed a child a diet which is unhealthy? You were the parent. Hopefully it's done no harm, but clearly she's realised it's a bad idea (especially for a growing child)

🤣🤣🤣🤣

there’s always one
